Does Ps4 Play Ps3 Games Can I Play Ps3 Games On Ps4

How to play ps3 games on ps4

The answer is, somewhat sadly, noyou cannot play PS3 games on PS4.

The reason why you cannot play PS3 games on PS4 is because the PS3 was built using the Cell CPU architecture which, when taken in tandem with a raft of other custom components, meant that the PS4 could not play PS3 games straight out of the box.

The PS4 and PS4 Pro by comparison use a lot of the off the shelf PC parts, whereas the PS3 did not, hence why PS3 games simply will not work on PS4. There is however, a workaround of sorts.

Sony has launched the PlayStation Now service which allows you to stream PS3 gameplay to your PS4.

This works by having a number of PS3s hooked up to a server and when that server streams the game to you in a video stream. You then interact with that game using your controller and the video stream returns to the server to let it know that an interaction has taken place, before firing back the response to the player.

All of this occurs extremely quickly and in a matter of milliseconds, but the quality of the stream and the responsiveness of it both entirely depend on the quality of your internet connection. The faster the better. You can catch the full list of all PS3 games on the PlayStation Now service right here.

A Must For Nostalgics

Graphics have long since ceased to be everything when it comes to games. After all, even age-old hams of the gaming industry can still be really fun in the present. This is especially the case if you have already idolized the title in the past. Certainly, the commonly known rose-colored glasses play a big role. Thanks to beautiful childhood memories, they turn even ugly games into real eye-catchers. I always use the Christmas season in particular to bring out my old classics again. However, while you can easily play games from the predecessor console, Xbox 360, on the Xbox One, PS4 owners are left out in the cold. This is at least the case when you want to insert the old DVDs of your game collection. Digitally, the whole thing looks different.

Sony aficionados will no doubt be quick to ask why the PlayStation 4 no longer offers backwards compatibility. After all, this was the case with both PS2 and PS3. The reason is quite simply the costs that are associated with it. After all, you have to adapt the hardware accordingly to make sure that the new console can also read old media. Sony itself blames it on the fact that the feature is simply not used enough. A costly adaptation does not seem to be worthwhile. In addition, Sony would then gamble away its opportunities to earn money with the old gems in other ways.

Why Cant The Ps4 Play Ps3 Games

The PS3 and PS4 use completely different system architectures, which means the PS4 would need to emulate the PS3s system in order to make the games work. The figure often quoted is that a system needs ten times the power of the thing its emulating in order to do so at full speed.

Sony does claim that the PS4 meets this ten times more powerful mark, but producing a workable emulator also requires a whole lot of work when working with a system of the PS3s complexity. And that means a healthy cash investment, too.

Sony decided not to do this, and its sure to be one of the most common complaints about the new console. We can imagine many people simply assuming theyll be able to play their old PS3 games on the thing.

    Is Ps5 Backward Compatible With Ps4 Ps3 Ps2 And Ps1

How To Play PS3 Games On Your PS4: Playstation Now Review

Sony confirmed via an article published by Famitsuon September 17 that backward compatibility was a consideration when designing the console. “We keep in mind the engineering specialized for the PS5, as we produced the device,” a Siliconera translation reads. “In the midst of that, the PS4 already has 100 million players We thought they ought to want to play PS4 titles on the PS5 as well indeed, so we included compatibility with the PS4.”

In other words, Sony deemed the PS4 as the most important console to support when it came to backward compatibility. PlayStation’s Jim Ryan has also been fairly negative towards PlayStation’s retro games in the past.

“When weâve dabbled with backward compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much,” he said in a Time Magazine interview from 2017. “That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games. And the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?”

It is possible that the PS1, PS2, and PS3 could gain some form of support through ports or PlayStation Now, but Sony hasn’t clarified if that will be the case as of yet.
