And the walls come tumbling down. Or chipping away slowly, but still. Just three months after the issue came to a head at e3, Sony is relenting on its restrictionist policies and beginning an “extended cross-play beta” for Fortnite, beginning today. That means that PS4 players will be able to play Fortnite with those on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in addition to the mobile and PC users they could already play with, and a blog post from Sony indicates that they’ll be able to share progression between platforms going forward, as well. It’s a big step from the biggest name in console gaming, and it’s sure to impact the entire console industry going forward.

This is a forward-facing decision, and the right one. Cross-play between Microsoft and Nintendo probably won’t impact Sony’s bottom line this much for the remainder of the PS4/Xbox One generation, but it could well have become a major sticking point in the launch of the next generation if Sony hadn’t made this change now. Sony no doubt remembers how well it went for Microsoft when it attempted its own restrictionist policies at the Xbox One announcement: not well.
We’ll see what happens going forward: I wouldn’t expect anything to happen very quickly. More extensive cross-play took a while with even between Xbox and Windows, both of which run different versions of the same software. But the message today is clear: things are moving.

Your canonical Fortnite information lives in your Epic Games account. Link that account everywhere you play, and your progress and purchased content travels with you.

Sony recently opened the PlayStation 4 up to cross-platform play “for select third-party content” which is big in particular for players of Fortnite–the first game to officially enable the functionality between Xbox One and PS4 users. This also means that account progress and cosmetic items are now platform agnostic, though these functions are currently in beta form. But there are a few things you’d need to do to activate matchmaking with players of all platforms.
First thing to note is that cross-platform matchmaking is only available to those who are in a party with people through Epic Friends. The Issue began when Epic Games launched Fortnights in-app store payment system in August 2020. As a result, Apple and Google and their respective app stores banned the app.
Fortnite was removed from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, respectively. For Android users, Fortnite can be installed and updated without going through Google Play, but for iOS users, this may not be possible.
