The first time we saw backwards compatibility was on the PS2. This system was indeed capable of playing PS1 games, but the caveat was you had to use a memory card from the original system to save your data. You couldnt save PS2 data on a PS1 memory card.
That being said, there were some PS1 games that could not be played on the PS2. This list changed based on the model of the PS2. When the PS3 released, there were several models.
The 60GB PS3 was fully backwards compatible. The original 80GB model was also compatible through emulation. All other models did not have PS2 compatibility but could still play PS1 games. These systems offered the ability to make an internal memory card that could be used to store data from older titles.
Jump to the PS4 and there was zero backwards compatibility at launch. The reason for this had to do with the systems architecture. The PS3 had a proprietary cell processor that created some phenomenal first-party games, but ultimately alienating most third-party developers.
The PS4 is designed more like a traditional PC for the purpose of welcoming quality experiencing across all developers. This shift in structure was the reasoning behind Sonys decision to not make the new system backwards compatible.

3. Remastered Releases
Even so, people arent too keen on buying these games again.

Wait, Is Sony getting ready to surprise PlayStation players by expanding PS5 backward compatibility support to include PS3, PS2, and PS1 games? Well, a new Sony patent has ignited this exact speculation. On March 18, a new patent from Sony was published titled “Method and Apparatus for Awarding Trophies.” On the surface level, this patent isn’t very interesting, but it’s about awarding trophies for emulated games, and the only games Sony would be emulating in 2021 would be legacy games, like those on PS3, PS2, and PS1.
Of course, the patent makes no mention of the PS5, backward compatibility support, the aforementioned legacy consoles, or anything too juicy, but it does mention emulation quite a bit. Beyond this, it’s brimming with technical jargon.
“A computer-implemented method assigns one or more trophies to a user. A game is emulated in response to a request from a client device,” reads an abstract of the patent. “A trophy trigger is detected during emulation of the game by comparing a memory value of the emulated game to a predetermined value and assigning the one or more trophies to the user based on the detected trophy trigger.”
More or less, this all the patent divulges of consequence, and for now, there’s no way to know if the speculation above is off-base or not. What we do know is that companies like Sony file patents all of the time, many of which never graduate from concept to product.
Sony Isn’t The Only Offender
Of course, backwards compatibility issues are not restricted to Sony consoles. In fact, Nintendo is probably the worst offender, on account of it constantly changing its physical media formats, and the digital game stores.
If you want to play a Wii game you better well have a Wii or Wii U, because the Nintendo Switch uses cartridges. GameCube games will play on the Wii, but only the original model that has ports for the right controllers and memory cards. Newer models, including the Wii U, will not play older titles without software modification.
What about the digital titles you purchased on Wii or Wii U? Those are only available on the older consoles, and since Nintendo is in the process of shutting down that particular flavor of the eShop, you better make sure you have copies saved to your console. Some games have been ported to the Switch, like Bayonetta 2 or Pokkén Tournament, but youll have to pay for them again.
Whether you keep older consoles around or not, its still not too much to ask for console-makers to take backwards compatibility into consideration when designing its machines. Weve all heard about how powerful and fast the PS5 is, which is great, but if you have a hankering for anything made before November 2013, youre out of luck.
Considering the size and cost of the PS5, Id have hoped for more. I shouldnt have to work out what adapters I need to hook up my dusty old PS2, because the PS5 should be the only PlayStation Ill ever need. But its not.

What Is Ps5 Backwards Compatibility
PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility refers to the kind of ability that PS5 console can play games on the former PlayStation consoles including PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, as well as the original PlayStation. As you can figure the answer after reading the content in the above, PS5 cant play PS1 original games including PlayStation One discs and PS One Classics that you may have purchased on PS3 or PSP in the past. Yet, there are a few PS4 remasters that are able to be played on PS5, such as Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, PaRappa the Rapper, and MediEvil.
Is It Really Coming
Attaining complete backwards compatibility on the PS5 may not be an easy thing. Emulating PS4 on the PS5 could be relatively easier than emulating the earlier consoles, like the PS3, which has a different architecture, especially its Cell Processor. Reportedly, this was the main reason why Sony faced difficulty in making the PS4 backwards compatible. But, the new patent suggests that Sony may have found a way to address the earlier issues.
It must be noted that the patent makes no reference to any gaming console. But, it is largely believed that the patent is talking about the complete backwards compatibility on PS5. Another speculation is that the patent could be of a new addition to the PS4 as it only mentions a new device application.
Also, another possibility is that it is just another patent from the Japanese company with no surety of it being actually implemented.
Nevertheless, if Sony does somehow succeed in bringing complete backwards compatibility on the PS5, it could prove the biggest selling point. A user on a Reddit thread discussing this latest patent said, Thatd make me buy a PS5 day 1. Id also be a PS fan for life, just by virtue of all my games being on a PS account, so I can really see the business sense of this.

While all digital games will carry over, if you have a library of physical PS4 games, there is no way for you to use them on your PS5. That’s definitely something to consider if you are choosing between getting a regular PS5 or a PS5 Digital Edition.
The aforementioned support page confirms that PS4 games can be accessed digitally through either a Wi-Fi data transfer or by using an extended storage drive and transferring the data manually. Alternatively, you can go to your Games Library on PS5 and choose to download the game directly to your system.

Business presentations are rarely exciting sources of news, but Sonys IR Day 2018 report has an interesting slide on page 7 that contains a bit of text that gave us a clue:
Aim to mitigate the impact of platform lifecycle compared to past cycle and stabilize profit structure.
Admittedly its a lot of corporate speak, but the accompanying graph shows an interesting trend. As each console launches, profits go down by a large margin until later in the cycle when they go back into the green. Many believe, myself included, that this drop in sales is due to people waiting to purchase the new console because they dont want to lose their entire library.
Backwards compatibility with, at the very least, PS4 games, would most likely mitigate this drop in profits by encouraging people to upgrade and carry over all of their physical and digital purchases from the prior generation.

Understandably, one of the biggest questions about the PlayStation 5 console is whether or not it is compatible with previous-generation games. Ubisoft’s Delisting Hints At The Possibility For Ps5
Ubisoft has subsequently delisted the information pertaining to PS3/PS2/PS1 backwards compatibility, likely due to this support site page garnering some media attention. This isn’t an official confirmation, but there’d be no reason to request this site be changed unless there was further plans for backwards compatibility in the future. Either that or Ubisoft took the extra information down from that particular page as it was seemingly unneeded information for now. Whatever the justification, it stands to reason that additional backwards compatibility support for PS5 could be possible.
That being said, if plans for further backwards compatibility are in the works, it’s going to take a lot longer than fans may expect. Xbox One’s backwards compatibility, and by extension Xbox Series X’s backwards compatibility, is a genuine technical marvel. Playing Xbox 360 games on Xbox One takes a lot more leg work than people may expect. Running Xbox 360 or even original Xbox games requires a highly robust emulation process that works in tandem with the Xbox One’s processor. If the PS5 has something similar planned for backwards compatibility, it’d theoretically be a few years before its implemented, considering what we know about the console already.

Sony Is Acquiring More Games Studios
In 2021, we’ve seen that Sony has acquired games studios such as Bluepoint Games, Housemarque, and Firesprite. This means that not only will we see more excellent games from these developers, but these games will be tailormade for the PS5.
We all know the gaming greatness Sony has achieved in the past with its first-party titles. With its acquisitions of quality games studios, we’re likely to see the trend of outstanding first-party Sony games continue for the PS5.
This further supports the previous point we can expect more original PS5 content. The PS4 opened up some brilliant franchises, and we’re going to see successors to these games with the PS5. But, with Sony acquiring these new games studios, it’s clear that the gaming giant wants to bring more original and exciting ideas to the PlayStation family and not just build upon existing franchises.

Sony confirmed via an article published by Famitsuon September 17 that backward compatibility was a consideration when designing the console. “We keep in mind the engineering specialized for the PS5, as we produced the device,” a Siliconera translation reads. “In the midst of that, the PS4 already has 100 million players We thought they ought to want to play PS4 titles on the PS5 as well indeed, so we included compatibility with the PS4.”
In other words, Sony deemed the PS4 as the most important console to support when it came to backward compatibility. PlayStation’s Jim Ryan has also been fairly negative towards PlayStation’s retro games in the past.
“When weâve dabbled with backward compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much,” he said in a Time Magazine interview from 2017. “That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games. And the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?”
It is possible that the PS1, PS2, and PS3 could gain some form of support through ports or PlayStation Now, but Sony hasn’t clarified if that will be the case as of yet.

Although rumors suggested a plan similar to Xbox, it seems the PS5 will only be backwards compatible with some PS4 titles.
The latest chapter of the backwards compatibility saga for PlayStation is unfolding. Sony has been somewhat coy about details regarding the PlayStation 5‘s backwards compatibility support, and specifically whether it will be able to play games from generations prior to the PlayStation 4. We know that many PS4 titles will work on the new console, you be able to play PS3, PS2, and original PlayStation titles on a PS5? According to Ubisoft, those systems’ games are not supported on the next-gen console–although whether or not this is true remains to be seen. If so, it would follow the approach Sony took with the PS4–and far different than how it initially approached the PS3 generation.
A Ubisoft support page explains how its titles will transition from PS4 to PS5, as each publisher seems to be taking a different approach to cross-gen upgrades. The post mentions that PS4 players will be able to play games with PS5 players online, which aligns with Ubisoft’s commitment thus far to offer free next-generation upgrades for titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion.
