When Does The Next Gen Playstation Come Out

Don't Miss

Ps5 Review: Backwards Compatibility

Is Xbox Set to Steal the Spotlight from PlayStation Again? – Next-Gen Console Watch

The PS5 works with nearly all PS4 games, which is a huge step up from Sonys complete lack of backwards compatibility last generation. I tested close to a dozen PS4 games on PS5, including The Last of Us Part II, God of War, Mortal Kombat 11, Tetris Effect and Resident Evil 2, and almost all of them loaded faster and ran better than they did on my launch PS4. Both digital and disc-based PS4 games worked without a hitch on my PS5, and my physical movies worked just fine on the systems 4K Blu-ray drive.

The PS5 allows you to take advantage of any PS4 Pro enhancements a game offers, so games that have higher resolution or frame rate modes benefit the most from Sonys new console. As someone coming from a launch PS4, the ability to finally enjoy God of Wars high-frame rate mode or play Tetris Effect in 4K felt almost worth the price of admission on its own .

The PS5 is designed to work with most first-party and officially licensed PS4 accessories, and I had no issues bringing my existing last-gen gear over. Pairing my DualShock 4 to the PS5 was as simple as plugging it in via USB cable, and my existing headsets worked just fine with the DualSenses 3.5 mm audio jack.

Third-party wired controllers, such as my Hori Fightpad and Victrix Pro FS Fight Stick, also worked perfectly as I mashed buttons in Mortal Kombat. Just keep in mind that the DualShock 4 only works with backwards compatible PS4 games, so you wont be able to use it for PS5-only titles.

Playstation 5 Price: Cheaper Digital Edition

There are two versions of the PlayStation 5: one with a disc drive and one without. It’s a strategy could well prove crucial for the next console generation it lets Sony keep at least one model more affordable while still offering a more fully-featured PS5.

Unlike the approach taken by Microsoft with the Xbox Series X and Series S, the full-fat, disc-playing PlayStation 5 and the more affordable, disc-less PlayStation 5 Digital Edition enjoy performance parity, with the optical drive the only difference between the two machines.

We predicted that the PS5 Digital Edition would dip below the magic £400 barrier, while the version with the disc drive might be more like £499 , and Sony has actually trumped our expectations in the UK at least.

Last year, the PS5 shed around 300g in weight. The updated version, which boasts a lighter heatsink, is available now in most parts of the world. If you want to check which version you have, the original PS5 serial model numbers are: CF1016A and CFI-1015B . The new PS5 numbers are: CFI-1116A and CFI-1100B .

Ps5 Review: Performance And Games

That cross, circle, square, and triangle pattern on the inside of the PS5’s fins is just lovely.

Right, straight off the bat, there is one thing that I need to discuss in this PS5 review when talking about performance and it’s something that readers of T3 will be used to by now if they have just read my Xbox Series X and S reviews. And that thing is storage space.

The PS5 is advertised as shipping with an 825GB SSD, which on paper sounds rather large, even if it is less than the 1TB drive that the Xbox Series X is advertised as coming with.

Just as the Xbox Series X doesn’t actually have 1TB of useable room for games, apps, and media out of the box, with just 800GB available, the PS5 follows suit and technically only has 667GB of useable space when first switched on.

The PS5’s load times are so fast gamers will be pinching themselves to check if they are dreaming

Now, look, I realise that you can install plenty of AAA games with that amount of space, but when you consider that right now at launch you can’t actually make use of the console’s hardware expansion port , and that flagship last-gen PlayStation systems came with more storage space, you can’t help but feel a little disappointed.

Hardcore gamers will absolutely want more storage space in their PS5 and, in my mind, the sooner Sony can turn on its M.2 SSD drive expansion port, the better. Especially so as both Microsoft’s systems can be upgraded in storage right now and it can be done easier, too.

What’s The Difference Between Ps5 And Ps5 Digital

The key difference between the base PS5 and its digital edition is its disc drive. The high-end or default PS5 costs $500 and comes with a disc drive while the $400 digital version does not have a disc drive, meaning it can only install and play games via digital download. Picking between the two comes down to a few things, not just the convenience of using a disc or not. You should also consider whether or not you can afford or want to rely solely on the internet to play your games and how you feel about not technically “owning” the games physically.

There are a few other differences to be aware of as well. The base PS5 is larger and heavier than the digital PS5, but not by much. Head down to the section on technical specs for a more detailed breakdown.

What Can We Expect From The Next Sony State Of Play

E3 Rumor: PS5 is âMore Powerfulâ? Than Project Scarlett

While Sony’s next State of Play hasn’t been confirmed, we imagine the event will provide updates and announcements on PS4 and PS5 games coming in 2022.

We imagine that its next event could include updates on the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok, GTA 5 on PS5 and Forspoken – both of which are due to release this year. We also imagine we’ll get updates on some upcoming indie titles like Stray.

We’re also hoping to get an update on PSVR 2, but we expect that Sony’s new virtual reality hardware will instead take center stage at a PlayStation showcase later this year.

What Are The Main Exclusives For The Ps5

Sony has long used exclusive partnerships with game publishers to help convince people to choose the PlayStation over the Xbox. This happens through games made only for PlayStation, as well as multi-platform titles with certain features only available for PlayStation.

The strategy will continue in the first year of the PS5.

Below are some of the most notable exclusives Sony acquired for the near-future:

  • Extra Call of Duty Cold War loadout classes, features
  • Gran Turismo 7

Should I Wait For A Ps5 Pro Or Just Buy A Ps5

Youll always get a better deal if you wait, thats just the nature of technology. However, the PS5 is an excellent console that has great games you can play right now. Yes, a PlayStation 5 Pro will be able to provide a better overall experience, but just think how much fun youll be missing out on by waiting?

Playstation 5 Price: Recent History

After much waiting, Sony announced the price and release date of the PS5 on 16th September 2020.

The company set the price of the PS5 Digital Edition at £360 , and the PS5 disc edition at £450 . That came as a pleasant surprise to those who’d expected the PS5 to be priced higher than the rival Xbox Series X. Prices remain rock solid with demand continuing to outstrip supply in 2022.

But how does the PS5’s price compare to that of its predecessors?

The original PlayStation and PS2 launched at £299 in 1994 and 2000 respectively. The PS3 was quite the step up in 2006, with the entry-level 20GB model starting at £425 although that was more or less in line with inflation with regard to the original PlayStation, and there were also the significant hardware upgrades to factor in, not least of all being the Blu-ray optical drive.

Nonetheless, the PS3 was initially criticised partly for its seemingly high price. The 60GB model’s $599 price tag took particularly heavy flack. By the arrival of the PS3 Slim in 2009, though, all seemed to have been forgiven.

The bigger public surprise was saved for the 2013 PS4 launch, however, when the PlayStation price dropped down to £350 and heralded the arrival of one of the best-selling games consoles of all time.

GTA 6 and The Next-Gen Titles We’re Waiting For – Next-Gen Console Watch

The Sony PS5 console as seen in the image above stands vertically and sports a black and white design that matches the all-new DualSense controller. Its also worth noting that there are two versions of the console the standard console and the slimmer Digital Edition. Both have the same basic design, with the latter missing an optical drive.

Both consoles are also massive. Theyre the largest home consoles ever released and are more on par with a PC tower when it comes to space requirements. Keep this in mind before purchase or it might have to live on the floor in front of your TV.

While the console ships with a futuristic black and white color scheme, the side panels are easy to remove. Sony has nixed the idea of custom panels for now . Nevertheless, you can buy vinyl skins to give your PS5 a more customized look.

Another benefit of the new removable panels is that its much easier to clean dust from the fans. This should help the console run cool and quiet, especially over time. In our PS5 review, we noted that the console runs quiet, but as dust builds up over time that might change.

Final Fantasy Xvi Announced

Final Fantasy XVI is a PlayStation 5 exclusive! JRPG Game of Thrones vibes from the latest in Square-Enixs long-running fantasy series. It has epic monsters in a medieval-esque setting, the plot appears to involve crystals, and the combat has a bit of a Devil May Cry look. Heres the reveal trailer:

Id tell you what my dream announcements would be, but honestly my dream announcement was a Demons Souls remake and thats already happened. The return of Parappa the Rapper in 4K!?

Of course, since June, Microsoft has announced plenty more info about its rival console, the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. The whole of Twitter has been arguing about whether or not the marketing is confusing – which, to me, is a fairly good indication that it IS confusing – but heres the basic info:

-The Xbox Series S is an entry-level version of the new Xbox that will cost £249. It has no disc drive and cannot play games in 4K.

-The Xbox Series X will cost £449 and outputs in 4K, and has a disc drive

Its a super aggressive price point from Microsoft – and coupled with Xbox Game Pass, which offers access to every new game from Microsofts studios, every new EA game and hundreds more for just over £10 a month, its really turned some heads. Xbox is even offering interest-free payment plans that can get you into the next generation of consoles for £20.99 a month. Thats very attractive, and cheaper in real terms than a cutting-edge games console has ever been before.

Is The Ps5 Worth It

PlayStation 5 Release Date, Games, Developers: When Is the Next ...

Whether youre upgrading from a PS4 or just starting with the latest console, buying a PS5 will cost a pretty penny. Consoles generally build value over time as more games are released, so before you spend your hard-earned money you should ask yourself: is the PS5 worth it?

As of 2021, the answer isnt so clear. Right now, there arguably arent enough next-gen titles to justify the purchase, especially if you already have a PS4 or PS4 Pro. What youre getting is improved performance on games that you already have rather than a truly game-changing experience on day one. Better graphics and faster load times are great, but theyre not transformative.

If you dont currently have a console, it might be worth picking up a PS5. However, it faces some stiff competition from the Xbox Series X. Unless youre looking for PlayStation exclusives , Xbox Game Pass provides incredible value with access to tons of first-party games.

One area where the Xbox Series X cant compete is the controller. Sony has knocked it out of the park with the new PlayStation 5 DualSense. Improved ergonomics, adaptive triggers, and incredible haptic feedback make a huge difference while playing games. Android Authoritys own C. Scott Brown was completely blown away by the experience, stating that its changed his entire outlook on console gaming.

Where To Buy Ps5 Accessories

Getting hold of PS5 accessories is a whole lot easier than getting hold of a PS5 console right now. But many of the most popular accessories still flash in and out of stock during busy trading periods such as Black Friday. In other words, you might want to grab stock while it’s available, rather than wait until you secure your console.

PlayStation 5 Console Covers £45 Available to order from Sony Direct from 21st January, and on general sale on 18th February, these official PS5 covers add a dash of colour to your console.

What Could The Ps5 Pro Price Be

Looking back at the release of the PS4 and PS4 Pro might also hint at how Sony could price an eventual PS5 upgrade. The PS4 launched at $399 and the Pro model was released three years later with the same $399 price tag.

This time around, two PS5 models have launched: a $399 Digital Edition and the $499 Standard Edition. If Sony maintains its pricing strategy from the past generation then the Digital and Standard Editions of the PS5 Pro might launch at the same $399 and $499 price points.

Formation Of Sony Computer Entertainment

At Sony Music Entertainment, Kutaragi worked closely with Shigeo Maruyama, the CEO of Sony Music, and with Akira Sato to form Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on November 16, 1993. A building block of SCEI was its initial partnership with Sony Music which helped SCEI attract creative talent to the company as well as assist SCEI in manufacturing, marketing and producing discs, something that Sony Music had been doing with Music Discs. The final two key members of SCEI were Terry Tokunaka, the President of SCEI from Sony’s headquarters, and Olaf Olafsson. Olafsson was CEO and president of New York-based Sony Interactive Entertainment which was the parent company for the 1994-founded Sony Computer Entertainment of America .

The PlayStation project, SCEI’s first official project, was finally given the green light by Sony executives in 1993 after a few years of development. Also in 1993, Phil Harrison, who later became President of SCE Worldwide Studios, was recruited into SCEI to attract developers and publishers to produce games for their new PlayStation platform.
