Will Astro A40 Work On Ps5

Astro A40 Tr + Mixamp Pro What I Don’t Like

How To Setup Astro A40/A50 on PS5 without Splitter

This is usually a $250 headset if you get the MixAmp Pro package when it’s not on sale . That’s a steep asking price for anyone. Because it wasn’t initially designed for the PS5, the MixAmp isn’t fully compatible. Since the PS5 doesn’t have optical audio ports, you’ll hook up the MixAmp as you would to PC, via a micro-USB cable. While you can adjust the volume just fine and the microphone will work, the game/voice audio balance does not. I tested it out and found that favoring game audio would lower all of the audio, including chat. Favoring voice would keep both game and chat levels the same. This may not be a deal-breaker for some, but if you want that full compatibility, you need a separate $40 adapter . When it’s all said and done, you’re looking at spending nearly $300. That’s unreasonable for a PS5 headset.

Getting past its MixAmp woes, there’s not a lot of bad things to say about the A40. I did feel like the clamping pressure of the headset was more than I’m used to initially, but the headset is quick to break in so that it doesn’t become a problem.

Best Ps5 Headset: Logitech G Pro X Wireless

Our favourite PlayStation headset right now is the £189/$199Logitech G Pro X Wireless, which uses a 2.4GHz USB dongle to connect to PS5, PS4, PC or Switch . This cross-platform headset offers great comfort for the spectacled and non-spectacled alike, with the option of velour or memory foam ear pads, as well as impeccable build quality with plenty of metal evident. The 50mm drivers inside provide a neutral sound, with a slight emphasis to mids that can help highlight footstep sounds. Surround sound is provided by 3D Audio on PS5 or DTS Headphone:X on PC I much prefer this arrangement as it tends to provide more consistent results than each headphone maker rolling their own simulated surround solution on the headset itself.

Wireless headphones tend to suffer in mic quality, but the solid hardware here plus the addition of Blue Voice software on PC make this one of the best-sounding options in the category. Battery life is reasonable, at around 20 hours, with easy USB-C recharging. One area I’d like to particularly highlight is usability Logitech has done well to incorporate a large number of controls onto a single earcup while ensuring each has a distinct feel. Overall, the G Pro X is a great pick for any competitively-minded PS5 or PC gamers.

How To Connect A Headset Or Speakers To The Ps5 Using Optical Cables

You might have noticed that there is no optical audio output on your PS5.

Sony decided to remove this in the new console due to it’s “low usage”.

Fortunately, there is a way around this. If you buy an HDMI Audio Extractor, you can strip the audio from the HDMI cable and connect an Optical cable.

The Optical cable can then be run into your Mix Amp or Speakers. Most of these devices also come with a second ‘Audio Out’ port that allows you to split the audio to multiple devices e.g. a headset and speakers.

You can explore some HDMI Audio Extractor options here:

You may also need some extra HDMI cables – be sure to grab them here.

Astro Hdmi Audio Adapter For Ps5

A few of the aforementioned products require the Astro HDMI Audio Adapter for PlayStation 5 if you want to use the mixer. The adapter is HDMI 2.0b Pass-through, which means that it supports 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with HDR.

You wont be able to play games at 120 frames per second in 4K using this adapter, however.

Best Cheap Wireless Gaming Headset: Hyperx Cloud Flight

How To Setup Astro A40/A50 on PS5 without Splitter

The £99/$90HyperX Cloud Flight is a great wireless headset for the money, with the regular Cloud Flight being offer for the PS5, PS4 and PC, while the similarly-named CloudX Flight performs a similar role for Xbox gamers. There’s also a ‘Cloud Flight PS5’ which has a blue colour scheme, but it’s functionally identical to its red-coloured predecessor. All of these headsets offer balanced sound, courtesy of 50mm drivers, 30 hours of battery life and a detachable microphone that’s capable of isolating your voice even in louder environments. Sound quality is impressive too, with a relatively balanced sound profile with a subtle bass boost. Imaging is good, but the sound stage is relatively narrow and not much outside noise is blocked. There’s no surround sound, but you can get this for free on PC or PS5 .

Overall: a comfy headset with good audio characteristics for gaming and long battery life, but a few quirks that could be improved in future models.

Best Switch Headset: Corsair Hs70 Bluetooth

The Corsair HS70 Bluetooth is the perfect headset for Nintendo’s… unorthodox approach to multiplayer gaming that restricts party chat to a smartphone app. With the HS70, you can be hooked up to the Switch via 3.5mm and your phone via Bluetooth simultaneously, allowing you to hear game audio and chat with your friends in comfort. You can use the HS70 with PC , PS5 and Xbox Series X/S , granting this headset excellent flexibility. The same simultaneous wired + Bluetooth connection also works if you want be on Discord while gaming on console perfect for cross-platform Warzone games.

We found the HS70 comfortable in our testing, despite toasty ears after each gaming session, with rationally-designed controls and convenient USB-C charging. Audio quality is a little better than the Arctis 1 Wireless we previously had as our top Switch pick, with a V-shaped frequency response that emphasises bass and treble at the expense of mids mic quality is also good, especially when used over a wired connection.

As an alternative, the Arctis 1 Wireless for Xbox offers full wireless connectivity for Switch, as well as Xbox Series X/S and PS5. That makes it a great option if you’re looking for a lighter headset and don’t need Bluetooth support for voice chat.

Best Tough Gaming Headphones: Epos Sennheiser Gsp 600

If you’re constantly breaking your headphones by running them over in your chair or tossing them off in a fit of rage, then something a little tougher could be just what you’re after. The best build quality we’ve found on a gaming headset we’ve tested is Epos’ excellent GSP 600 – which is also available in white as the GSP 601 and in blue/tan as the GSP 602. No matter which colour you choose, the headset feels extremely robust with its metal and plastic construction.

Of course, something that’s well-built but rubbish isn’t worth buying – but thankfully the GSP 600 is also a really good wired headset too. It offers incredible noise isolation, thanks to its thick ear cups and moderate clamping force, making it easy to lose yourself in a virtual world. The sound quality is good too, with an mild emphasis on bass that makes cinematic singleplayer games sound fantastic – although this does mean that more subtle highs and mids can be lost, making it less suitable for competitive multiplayer games like CSGO, Valorant or Warzone. The flip-down microphone works well enough, and the chunky volume wheel on the right ear cup makes it easy to adjust your sound in between firefights. Overall, it’s a strong option – befitting its premium price point.

You May Need An Adapter

Sony and Microsoft have already laid out how current-generation controllers will work on their next-gen consoles, but if youve spent money on a headset you really like, you might be wondering if you can still use those when you pick up a PS5 or Xbox Series X. The good news is, if you use Astro Gaming headsets, theyre most likely going to be compatible with the new consoles.

Xbox Series X

Lets start with Xbox as its headsets are going to have the easiest time upgrading to be compatible and feature-complete with the Xbox Series X.

  • A10 This first-generation wired headset will support game sounds and voice chat through its 3.5mm port.
  • A20 If you are using the first generation of the A20 headset, you will need to update the firmware via the Astro Command Center program.
  • A40 & A40 TR All four generations of the A40 headsets will support sounds and voice chat via the 3.5mm port.
  • A50 w/ Base Station The 3rd and 4th generation A50 headsets will require a firmware update. A50 headsets created during the Xbox 360 era will not be updated to work with the Xbox Series X.

If you use a MixAmp with your headsets, the M60 and M80 will work via the 3.5mm port. If you have a MixAmp Pro TR, know that only the 3rd and 4th generation units will receive an update to work with the Series X. The A50 and MixAmp Pro can also be updated for Dolby Atmos for no extra cost. Any firmware updates made to your Astro equipment will not impact their use with current generation systems.

Best Surround Sound In A Gaming Headset: Creative Sxfi Gamer

The Creative SXFI Gamer delivers some of the best surround sound we’ve experienced on a gaming headset. Interestingly, it slightly alters its surround sound implementation based on the topology of your ear, which it calculates based on photographs of your ear that you provide via the company’s smartphone app. This provides a really lush aural environment, perfect for enjoying single-player games. If you prefer more competitive fare, then there’s a battle mode which emphasises sounds like footsteps and reloads to help you track down your Warzone or Valorant opponents. I found this most helpful in games with more detailed soundscapes, like Warzone and Battlefield 5, as competitive-focused games like CSGO and Valorant already have quite a stark audio mix that makes it easy to locate an errant misstep.

Another possibility for surround sound junkies is the JBL Quantum One. This headset has a number of novel features, including active noise cancellation and an HRTF surround sound mode that adapts to each user based on measurements taken by a special in-ear mic worn under the headset itself during setup. Unfortunately, this latter mode didn’t work well for me, with the initial setup process playing extremely loud noises into my ear, pausing and then repeating ad infinitum for about 10 minutes. Later, I pushed the earbud in even further and completed the setup successfully, but the results weren’t noticeably better than the default tuning.

Astro A40 Tr + Mixamp Pro Should You Buy It

You should buy this if …

  • You want top of the line equipment from a well-known company
  • You want the best audio quality possible
  • You want to be able to swap out different parts with Astro’s Mod Kit

You should not buy this if …

  • You don’t want to spend a fortune
  • You want a headset fully compatible with PS5 out of the box, without separate adapters
  • You’re looking for a wireless headset

4.5out of 5

Anyone looking for a PS5 headset should consider other options before splurging on an Astro A40 and MixAmp. That’s not to say it’s a bad headset because it isn’t. There are just cheaper headsets out there that are fully compatible with PS5 without the extra adapters and cables. You don’t need to spend over $250 to get a headset that suits your needs on PS5. Despite that, I do feel comfortable saying it’s one of the best PS5 headsets purely based on audio capabilities if you grab the adapter. On PC, however, the Astro A40 is sublime right out of the box.

As good as the Astro A40 can be, I’d wait until the company comes out with a headset specifically designed with PS5 in mind. Logitech, and Astro by extension, prides itself in being one of the best peripherals manufacturers in the business. You can bet that a headset built for PS5 will be nothing short of amazing.

Probably. If you use the TVs optical out , or get an HDMI optical adapter , you can receive surround sound on the optical input. If you experience audio lag, look for an audio sync setting in the TV menu. You can also connect any analog audio output to the AUX input, but that will be only stereo.

I dont know if Gen 2 can receive game audio over USB, like Gens 3 & 4 can. PS4 supports USB voice chat with Gen 2 – – so unless PS5 has changed something, chat should work.

The best way to know for sure is to just try it.

What Are The Most Important Features In A Good Gaming Headset

Arguably, the most important feature is comfort, since you’ll probably end up wearing a headset for long stretches of time. Sound quality is the second-most-important feature, with microphone pickup quality right behind that .

If you get a wireless gaming headset, battery life is also an important spec. Battery life of 12 to 15 hours is considered OK, and anything over 20 hours is good.

How To Connect A Bluetooth Or Wireless Headset To The Ps5

Unfortunately, Bluetooth headsets and headphones are not compatible with the PS5.

Wireless headphones that have an appropriate USB dongle will still function as normal with the console and will work by simply plugging them into the console.

Astro A40 Tr Vs Astro A: Which Should You Buy

When it comes to which headset is better for PS5, that depends on how much money you want to spend. Because theyre so similar, I think the better choice all around is the Astro A40 TR provided you spend the extra money to get the MixAmp Pro. It may be wired, but this makes it more user-friendly. As convenient as a wireless headset may be, having only 15 hours of battery life hurts the otherwise excellent Astro A50.

Both require adapters anyway, so this one really all comes down to price.
