What Is Ps5 Backwards Compatibility
PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility refers to the kind of ability that PS5 console can play games on the former PlayStation consoles including PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, as well as the original PlayStation. This feature has been absent from their last few generations of consoles. Now, PS5 picks it up again and it is one of the most mentioned features by Sony.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Despite the Grand Theft Auto franchises continuing level of success, some have argued that the series peaked with San Andreas. Its hard to disagree this is Grand Theft Auto at its loudest, brashest, and most ridiculous. The narrative revolves around Carl CJ Johnson and his struggles with gang violence, organised crime, and police corruption, but its the sandbox that makes the game. San Andreas is a vast, sprawling metropolis where skyscrapers rub shoulders with badlands, and it all still feels impressive to explore seventeen years after the games original release.
Is Ps5 Adding Ps3 Ps2 And Ps1 Backward Compatibility New Sony Patent Has Playstation Fans Speculating
Wait, Is Sony getting ready to surprise PlayStation players by expanding PS5 backward compatibility support to include PS3, PS2, and PS1 games? Well, a new Sony patent has ignited this exact speculation. On March 18, a new patent from Sony was published titled “Method and Apparatus for Awarding Trophies.” On the surface level, this patent isn’t very interesting, but it’s about awarding trophies for emulated games, and the only games Sony would be emulating in 2021 would be legacy games, like those on PS3, PS2, and PS1.
Of course, the patent makes no mention of the PS5, backward compatibility support, the aforementioned legacy consoles, or anything too juicy, but it does mention emulation quite a bit. Beyond this, it’s brimming with technical jargon.
“A computer-implemented method assigns one or more trophies to a user. A game is emulated in response to a request from a client device,” reads an abstract of the patent. “A trophy trigger is detected during emulation of the game by comparing a memory value of the emulated game to a predetermined value and assigning the one or more trophies to the user based on the detected trophy trigger.”
More or less, this all the patent divulges of consequence, and for now, there’s no way to know if the speculation above is off-base or not. What we do know is that companies like Sony file patents all of the time, many of which never graduate from concept to product.

Which Ps2 Games Can You Play On The Ps5
As I have mentioned above, you cannot play physical PS2 games on the PS5.
If you insert a PS2 game disc into the PS5 disc drive, the message This disc isnt supported by the PS5 will appear on your gaming screen.
PlayStation hasnt come out to say if theyll extend the PS5 backward compatibility feature to allow it to play PS2 game discs.
I hope they do and make it as good as the Xbox Series X backward compatibility feature, which allows you to play original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One game discs.
So currently, the only way to play PS2 games on the PS5 is via PlayStation Now.

Sony Isn’t The Only Offender
Of course, backwards compatibility issues are not restricted to Sony consoles. In fact, Nintendo is probably the worst offender, on account of it constantly changing its physical media formats, and the digital game stores.
If you want to play a Wii game you better well have a Wii or Wii U, because the Nintendo Switch uses cartridges. GameCube games will play on the Wii, but only the original model that has ports for the right controllers and memory cards. Newer models, including the Wii U, will not play older titles without software modification.
What about the digital titles you purchased on Wii or Wii U? Those are only available on the older consoles, and since Nintendo is in the process of shutting down that particular flavor of the eShop, you better make sure you have copies saved to your console. Some games have been ported to the Switch, like Bayonetta 2 or Pokkén Tournament, but youll have to pay for them again.
Whether you keep older consoles around or not, its still not too much to ask for console-makers to take backwards compatibility into consideration when designing its machines. Weve all heard about how powerful and fast the PS5 is, which is great, but if you have a hankering for anything made before November 2013, youre out of luck.
Considering the size and cost of the PS5, Id have hoped for more. I shouldnt have to work out what adapters I need to hook up my dusty old PS2, because the PS5 should be the only PlayStation Ill ever need. But its not.
Looking Forward To Backward Compatibility
What is BC? It is a term used in the gaming industry, predominantly when it comes to the most popular consoles Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox. It denotes whether the newest consoles will be able to run games made for the previous generations, or not.
Sony, in particular, ran into heavy criticism during their announcement of the PS4 years ago. That was because the then-new console wouldnt allow owners to play PS3, PS2, or PS1 games on it.
Pictured above is the PS logo confirmed by Sony.
It would seem that Sony learned from their mistakes and have claimed that cross-gen and backward compatibility have received more focus and care this time around. As it stands, Sony confirmed that the newest console would support at least PlayStation 4 games. That would allow players who arent able to upgrade right away to keep playing with their friends who are. It will come as great news to those who may be intimidated by the price tag.
As for the consoles potential ability to run PS3 games or even older titles, there have been no official mentions so far. If the console launches with support only for PS4 games, then Sonys PS Now service will remain the only option to play titles from the pre-PS4 times. As for what the future will reveal, we must stay patient.

Can The Ps5 Play Ps2 Games
In the lead-up to the launch of the PlayStation 5, there was rampant speculation about backwards compatibility, including its ability to play games from every previous PlayStation console.

Right now, your options for playing PS2 games on the PS5 is pretty much the same as playing them on the PS4. Its always possible this may change in the future, but we wouldnt count on it.

As weve highlighted before, backwards compatibility has been a major talking point with the PS5. Gamers have been desperate to know whether classic games from older PlayStation consoles will be available on the PS5.
This is a sticking point for Sony and PS5 owners, as Microsoft has a plethora of backwards compatibility functions and features available across its range of Xbox consoles.
So, were jumping back another generation to look at whether the PS5 can play PS3 games.
Is Ps3 Ps2 And Ps1 Backward Compatibility Finally Happening
A new PlayStation patent suggests the PS5, and possibly the PS4, are finally getting PS3, PS2, and PS1 backward compatibility. Unlike the Xbox Series X — which plays many Xbox 360 and original Xbox games — the PS5 only plays PS4 games, and of course PS5 games as well. It isn’t backward compatible with PS3, PS2, or PS1 games. The unique architecture of the PS3 gives Sony an excuse when it comes to the third-generation PlayStation console, but it’s unclear why the PS2 and PS1 are excluded. That said, it sounds like much of this, if not all of this, may finally remedy itself.
A new patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment has surfaced online. And who’s behind the patent? Mark Cerny, the mastermind behind PlayStation hardware. And what is the patent for? Well, it’s titled “Backward Compatibility Through Use of Spoof Clock and Fine Grain Frequency.” In short, PlayStation is working on backward compatibility tech, presumably to unlock legacy PlayStation consoles on the PS5, and maybe the PS4.
There’s nothing about the patent that suggests it has anything to do with enabling backward compatibility support for PS3 games or PS2 games or PS1 games, but that’s of course where everyone’s mind immediately goes to.

The only way that youll be able to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on PS5 is through Sonys PlayStation Now streaming service. While hardly a perfect solution, PlayStation Now on PS5 will still allow players a glimpse into the back catalog of titles from the older PlayStation consoles.
To that end, a patent was recently unearthed which goes into detail about how PlayStation Now will be able to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. As such, it looks like the future of PS5 backwards compatibility for PS1, PS2 and PS3 games lay with PlayStation Now at this point.

Ps5 Backwards Compatibility: All The Latest Evidence
The PS4 is absolutely killing it this generation, with millions of consoles now comfortably sitting in gamers homes. Thats an impressive install base, but if Sony releases a brand new console without backwards compatibility, they would essentially starting from scratch.
Yes, the PS4 would continue to exist for several years, but when it comes time for the PS4 to go the way of the dodo bird, all those gamers will have a huge library of games that they can no longer play on PS5.
