I purchased an Xbox One X from Best Buy in February of 2018. I payed extra for the two year Geek Squad Protection Plan. The salesmen told me if I threw the Xbox down the stairs, to bring it back and they would give me a new one with the GSP.

In January of this year, the Xbox crashed, and would not boot up with a common error code for hard drive failure. I took it to my local BB to be fixed. The lady at the counter told me they usually just issue a new Xbox and I would get it in the mail in a couple days. However, when she entered the problem into her computer, they wanted to send it for repair instead of replacement. I agree and go without my Xbox for two weeks while it is shipped to Texas.

I get the Xbox back with the report that they found nothing wrong and just reset the hard drive to factory settings. It works for two weeks, and I get the same E105 Error and failure to start. I reset it to factory settings again myself, avoiding shipping it to Texas again, and it worked. For two more weeks. Last night when I tried to start it, I got the same E105 error.

I have no faith Best Buy’s willingness or ability to fix my problem at this point, so I contacted Microsoft. I learned through talking with Microsoft that by having Best Buy “repair” my device, it voided the manufacturer’s warranty. They tell me to go back to best buy.

If I had never bought the GSPP, my system would have been replaced by Microsoft under the 1 year MW.

Remove The Back Stickers And Screws

Now that you’ve got your PS4 ready to work, turn it around so the back is facing you, then flip it upside-down. You’ll see three stickers along the “top” that you must remove.

It’s never a good idea to return a computer or other gadget to a store without first erasing all your personal data. Stores with good policies and training will generally wipe devices back to factory settings before selling them again, but you never know when one might slip through the cracks.

We’ve seen this happen a few times with Best Buy, that ubiquitous chain with 1,600 stores in North America, which boasts that “more than 70 percent of the population lives within 15 minutes of a Best Buy store.”

The most recent incident happened last week when Michal Urban bought an open box Apple TV from a Best Buy in Mission Viejo, California. The Apple TV was still logged in to several of the previous owner’s accounts, Urban told Ars. Urban provided us with screenshots showing logged-in accounts for iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Now.

“I just got an open box Apple TV and sure enough the iTunes account is still linked, I can listen to someone’s songs, watch shows, perhaps even rent a movie?” Urban told Ars.

Urban said he intends to reset the device instead of taking advantage, but he documented the evidence first. “I like Best Buy overall, they are my go-to store for electronics,” Urban said, but he was disturbed by the poor security practice.

We contacted Best Buy’s public relations department to find out what Best Buy’s policies are for erasing returned devices.
