Syracuse, N.Y. — Sony is doing away with its PlayStation Vue live streaming television service on Jan. 30, 2020, saying it just wasnt profitable.

Sony blamed the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals for the services demise, but we suspect its decision to name the service after its gaming console caused a lot of confusion among customers and hurt subscription sales.

Many people thought they had to own the gaming console to get the service. But they didnt. All they needed was a streaming media device, like a Roku, to subscribe.

And thats a shame because, despite its lousy marketing effort, Sonys streaming TV service is arguably the best around for those looking for an alternative to cable. For $49.99 a month, its base Access plan carries all the television channels most people would want, including regional sports channels and most local broadcast stations. Also, it comes with a generous cloud DVR service at no extra charge, and it permits five simultaneous streams within the same household.
