There are two versions of Sony’s latest console: so how do you know whether to buy the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition? Well, there’s one major difference between the two – outside of the price.
The PS5 Digital Edition does not include a disc drive so no physical copies of games can be played on the console and you will have to buy all of your games digitally. All purchases have to be made through the official PSN Store. You will, however, still be able to play old PS4 games as long as you bought a digital copy. With that in mind, if you’ve fully embraced the digital revolution and are looking to save on the upfront cost of the console then the PS5 Digital Edition may be right for you.
For most, though, we’d suggest sticking with the standard PS5 as it has the added flexibility with the included disc drive. The other major sticking point with the PS5 Digital Edition is that Sony manufactures far fewer of them compared to the normal PS5. When retailers restock the consoles, then, you often have a considerably smaller chance of getting a Digital Edition – if they even have this version on sale in the first place.

First Price Details Emerge
Given the power of the PS5, its natural to think that the price may be more than past generations, but some new details should help put things into perspective.
While I would categorize it under the column of wishful thinking, one Canadian retailer has started taking pre-orders for the PS5. The price? Roughly $399 when converted to the U.S. Dollar!

The same price as the PS4 would certainly be interesting, but its possible they simply wanted to get ahead of the game on preorders and set a placeholder price. While we wait for concrete information, check out the rest of our early clues below!
Speaking on financial briefing in early November 2019, Sony revealed some thinking behind the price of the upcoming system.
They told investors on the call that theyre focus is on market penetration and market acceptability. Taking away the flowery terminology, this essentially means that they are going to price it in a way that doesnt shock the average consumer.
As is the case with most consoles, they will most certainly sell them at a loss in the beginning, but the goal will be to get an install base that yields long-term success.
This doesnt mean it will be cheap. Honestly, this further solidifies the argument that it will probably sit around the $499 mark.

How Specs Impact The Ps5 Price
Hoping for a slightly lower PS5 price? We hear you. However, it’s actually fair value when you break everything down. If we were to build the PS5 from components that are on the market right now, it’d be much, much more expensive.
Let’s look at the GPU first. Right now, you’d be staring down the barrel of an RTX 2080 equivalent graphics card to handle ray tracing at any kind of decent frame rate or resolution. To produce ray tracing at 4K – before we even get to the 8K Sony has promised – you’d need a powerful chip like a Radeon VII, or whatever the Navi equivalent will be inside the PS5. Want it to hit 30 frames per-second and medium-high settings? You’d be looking at $800 / £600+ at a minimum.
Now, onto that SSD. If you go bargain hunting right this second, you’ll pay $350 / £300-ish for a 1TB NVMe SSD from the likes of Samsung. Yes, you can go cheaper, but Sony is claiming that the PS5’s SSD will outperform all current PC SSDs. As such, $350 / £300 or more is about right.
With that in mind, we’re already looking at $1,000 / £1,000+ build. And that’s before you take other parts into account. We assume 32GB of RAM at a minimum, a Ryzen 7 equivalent CPU with 8 cores , and all the cooling, power, wireless tech, and casing required to keep everything together. That’s another $500 – $800 / £400 – £700 at least.
How Can You Preorder The Ps5
The preorder window for the console was supposed to begin on September 17, but reservations actually opened up within a few hours of the September 16 presentation.
, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart are all offering preorders, but as of 4 p.m. on September 17 all of these retailers’ supply has been booked. Gamers’ best bet is to periodically check in on all of these sites to see if they’re restocked.

How Much Does It Cost To Make A Ps5
Sony has never officially disclosed the cost to make a PS5. Its highly possible that its selling it with either minimal profit or at a loss. Generally speaking, consoles themselves dont make a lot of money. Most of the profit comes from selling games and accessories.
In order to keep things simple, well examine the processor, RAM, storage, and graphics card.
A current-day Zen2 processor costs around $100-$150. Considering that its custom-built on a bulk order , we can assume that the price may have been reduced to somewhere around $40-$100.
RAM is another key element of the PS5 production cost. 16 GB of GDDR6 clocked at 3500 MHz on the retailer market costs around $400. Considering that the manufacturer wouldve required millions of RAM sticks, the price couldve very well been halved. So were going to put it in the span of $150-$200.
Currently, an end-user may buy a 1TB NVMe SSD in the price range of $70-$150. Again putting in mind the bulk order, we may lower it to $40-$90.
You cannot assume the PS5 system cost without bringing up the graphics card. An end-user can buy an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D for about $450. Since the competition in the hardware retailer market is high, we could say Sony received it for about $350.
Putting all these parts together, the full cost of the PS5 should be somewhere between $310-$470. Of course, this doesnt factor in all the other components, the R& D and marketing costs, and the price of materials.

Leaks And Rumors Reveal Potential Price Points
We all saw the incredible reveal of the PS5 console and a bunch of games in June 2020, but what about the price? While we dont have a solid answer just yet, multiple sources have suggested what we also believe.
The first is a screenshot making the rounds of an Amazon listing, which suggests the PS5 standard will be 499 euros, and mostly like $499 USD. Take a look:

Ars Technica reports that a number of retailers across the United States are only carrying one PS5 Digital Edition for every three or four standard PS5’s out there. This essentially means that the chances of the PS5 Digital Edition selling out are far greater, so if you’re desperate for a shiny new PS5, you’ll have the best luck purchasing the standard edition.
If you’re willing to wait a month or two, the PS5 Digital Edition will likely be in higher stock, allowing you to order one comfortably.

We’ve been following PS5 restocks since the console launched back in November 2020 and have a solid idea of where to buy a PS5 at any time. Generally, it’s about once or twice a month right now. The PS5 still sells out in a matter of minutes in the US at the likes of Amazon and Walmart. Those in the UK usually get anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days to buy one depending on the retailer, the number of consoles in stock or the quality of bundles available.
