Bleemsync Is Back To Put A Snes In Your Playstation Classic

Sony’s PlayStation Classic is essentially an emulator in a mini PS1 shell. Of course, that means you can overcome its shortcomings by using hidden settings and hacks — albeit at at your own risk. Which is where BleemSync, the go-to modding solution for the PS Classic, comes in. Though it’s been around for a minute, BleemSync has now launched its official build, which should make it easier to use. With it you can add your own games to the retro console, run other console emulators and get more save states, among other features.

It’s important to note that this version of BleemSync is still a public beta, with all the kinks that entails. In a Reddit post, the BleemSync team claims that it’s still encountering issues with the power limiter. As a result, they advise waiting for build 1.1 if you can.

“Throughout testing we found that 95% of the issues was down to incompatible USB drives or drives hitting the 100ma limit and cutting out,” reads the post by Swingflip. “Whilst this can be solved using an older USB2.0 or powered USB hub, mileage might vary depending on what hardware you are using.”

Adding Games To Retroarch

Not inside the retroarch folder! You create a folder in the root of the stick, call it something like “Roms”. Inside it create a folder, let’s say “SNES” and put SNES roms in there. And so on.

In RA, you Load Content and go into /media and into the folder etc

You can put it in the RetroArch folder without problem. As long as you set your directories properly there shouldn’t be an issue. And if you’re doing a scan you just point it to the folder anyway, so it really should matter where it is.

If you’re making a playlist and using the scan function you should really be able to put the ROMs anywhere.

What Sony Got Right

For all the complaints about the PlayStation Classic and its failure to live up to hype, Sony got a few things right. The original gray box was faithfully miniaturized and the two included analog stick-free controllers felt identical to the original, right down to the sturdy cables. Sony cleverly solved how to play games that originally shipped on multiple discs by using the Open button to simulate changing the discs, making games like Final Fantasy VII playable, and save states let you resume playing games right where you left them.

But on the whole, mistakes were made.

Playstation Classic Hack: How To Access The Debug Menu

To gain access to the PlayStation Classic debug menu youll need to get your hands on a compatible USB keyboard. Unfortunately, not all keyboards will work and it seems like a trial-and-error approach is the only way to find out. So far, the only confirmed keyboards that work are the Corsair K70 and K95.

However, once you do have a compatible keyboard, tap the ESC key while your PlayStation Classic is loading a game and youll open up a debug menu to tweak all manner of settings.

As you can see from the Retro Gaming Arts YouTube video below, the settings are relatively simple and straightforward. You can emulate CRT scanlines if you want a retro feel to your games, and theres the option to switch the PAL 50Hz games over to 60Hz, which will notably boost the performance of titles like Tekken 3 and Ridge Racer 4.

Installing Hakchi2 Ce And Preparing Your Snes Classic Mini

Before you can add games to your SNES Classic Mini, you’ll first need to install the Hakchi2 CE tool on your PC, which you can download from the Hakchi2 GitHub repository.

Hakchi2 CE is Windows only, so you’ll need to create a Windows virtual machine on Linux if you’re using that OS. Once it’s downloaded and installed, open up Hakchi and go to Kernel > Install/Repair.

You’ll be asked if you want to flash the custom kernel, so select Yes. You might be asked for admin privileges, so accept this. A Windows command line installing drivers for interfacing with your SNES Mini will pop up. Once this is done, you’ll see the “Waiting for your NES/SNES Mini” window. You then need to do the following:

  • Switch your SNES Mini POWER button to the off position.
  • Connect your SNES Mini to your PC using the micro-USB cable.
  • Hold RESET, and then switch your SNES Mini POWER button to the on position.
  • Wait a few seconds, then release the RESET button.
  • The modified kernel will take a few minutes to install, and your SNES Mini will reboot in the process.

If you have any problems, wait for your SNES Mini to reboot and repeat the process. Once it’s installed successfully, click OK.

  • The Mini Snes Runs Ridge Racer Better Than The Ps Classic

The PlayStation Classic hasnt had the best of launches, in part due to some of the games running slower, and a lower frame rate, than what they should be. Fortunately, theres a solution: running those same games on the mini SNES.

YouTuber 8 Bit Flashback fired up Ridge Racer Type 4 on the PS Classic and the Mini SNES , with the latter using PCSX ReARMed open-source emulator. Thats the same emulator that the PS Classic uses too, as revealed by the licenses listed in the PS Classics menu.

But despite having slightly beefier hardware than the Mini SNES, its Nintendos console that offers the smoother Ridge Racer experience. And as you can see in this side-by-side comparison, Ridge Racer goes from being a sluggish, unenjoyable experience on the PS Classic to well, what Ridge Racer should have always been.

Only five of the PS Classics games are the PAL versions, but theyre some of the biggest highlights for Australians: Tekken 3, Grand Theft Auto, Tom Clancys Rainbow Six, Jumping Flash and Cool Boarders 2. But because Sony opted to include the PAL versions, rather than the NTSC ones, the experience is vastly compromised. In some instances, like GTA, it makes the game unplayable.

But even the NTSC games like Ridge Racer above dont run perfectly smoothly. Thats why games like Ridge Racer have uneven frame pacing and consistent jutter.

The PlayStation Classic is, in all honesty, a bit of a letdown.

While Sony certainly hoped it would be as phenomenal as Nintendos mini NES and SNES consoles, it leaves a lot to be desired. Sure its beautifully made and incredibly dinky and cool but, short of a couple of choice cuts, it features a lacking games lineup and performance issues.

Thankfully, that doesnt have to be the case anymore. A set of willing tinkerers have blown the PlayStation Classic wide open, revealing a tasty menu to help tweak and boost game settings and unlock support for a plethora of PlayStation games you can add to the device yourself.

Basically, its the same situation as if you hacked your SNES Classic Mini to add more games to it.
