Ps4 Pro Faulty After 20 Months
Hi all,
I have a PS4 Pro 1TB that has stopped reading discs after 20 months of ownership. Was purchased Dec 2016 and I still have the receipt.
I realise the warranty from Sony/JB Hifi is only 12 months, but I was wondering if the ACL requires me to have a working product for longer than this? I can’t seem to find anything online which stipulates the reasonable amount of a time an electronic product should last for.
I’m just looking into this because I actually hardly ever play it and I would average at most 1-2 uses per month, so have not used many times. Quite frustrating when all my previous Playstations have lasted for many years without fault. My ~7yo PS3 is still going strong!
I have tried calling Sony already and they said it was out of 12 month warranty so any repairs are at my own cost.
Would appreciate any advice I can get from all you wise consumers.

Last Sunday my Playstation was working fine for the majority of the day, but when I went back to watch Netflix that evening it would not turn on. I let it sit over night, and it ended up working perfectly fine all week until about an hour ago when it shut off while I was playing, and will not turn back on.
Basically, what it does is I will attempt to turn it on and the blue light will come on, some clicking will happen in the back and it will shut off. Here is a video:
I’ve also experienced a few random disc ejections over the last months too, never consistently though.
I contacted support last week and they said I probably need to send it in. Problem is, I am out of warranty as of 3 weeks ago and it will cost between 150-200 dollars…So I have a few concerns. I’ve read online a few times that some systems end up malfunctioning again, or the system they send in its place malfunctions too. I am also curious what the turn around for sending in a system is? I don’t want to pay all of that money if it will be over a month. I don’t have very much money right now and would rather eat my losses than deal with more delays and issues with Sony.
I’m going to contact Sonys support line as soon as possible. I just wanted to vent a little and see if anyone had some suggestions on how to handle the situation, or how to possibly fix the issue myself. Thanks a bunch!

The warranty for the PS4 is for 1 year and only covers material defects in material and workmanship. I didn’t need to use this as I had no problems with my PS4 and haven’t had any issues since I have had the system, which is since it launched. The quality of the product is great and very reliable, but it is nice to have a warranty, in case something happens. The warranty that Sony provides is industry standard, but I do think that a longer warranty period would be more user friendly, as I know plenty of people who have had issues with their console but their warranty had just expired. I know that many retailers do offer extended warranties and because you are spending a lot of money to purchase a console and things do happen, I would recommend purchasing one if you are given the option.
