This feature began with the Steam controller and the PlayStation 4 controller, but a recent update allows you to remap buttons on any controller you wantincluding Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers. This support was added in the January 18, 2017 build of Steam. Click Steam > Check for Steam Client Updates in Steam to get the latest version if you dont already have it.

The best tool for this is DS4Windows, an open-source app that lets you reprogram your PS4 controller as an Xinput controller.
Once your PS4 controller is connected via Bluetooth or USB, open DS4Windows, and it will automatically turn your PS4 controller into an Xinput controller.
There are fun things to play around with in DS4Windows, like using the PS4 trackpad as a mouse on your PC, changing the controller light colors, getting it to flash when you have low battery and so on. Have a play-around with it. Its a great tool!

More and more people are shifting from console to PC when it comes to gaming, simply because a powerful gaming PC can provide better graphics and frame rates than can be achieved by either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One – and high-end gaming PCs can easily outperform the PS4 Pro.
Even the confirmed specs of the PS5, due out later this year, can’t compete with some high-end gaming PCs.
However, console converts can struggle with using a keyboard and mouse, especially those of us that have been using a controller for years. Could we use the DualShock 4 controller to play games on PC? Technically yes, but its not as straightforward as you might hope.
If you don’t own a DualShock 4 yet, or want to grab a second pad specifically for your PC, you can grab one from at the time of writing, in a range of colours including black, blue, red, and white.

Install An Xbox 360 Controller Driver
NOTE: This step is only for users on Windows 7 or below. If you are using Windows 10, please skip this step and go directly to Step 3.
You are not able to use your PS4 controller on PC if you just physically connect it to your computer. Games on Windows cannot recognize your PS4 controller directly. You need a third-party application to emulate an Xbox 360 controller with your PS4 controller. In order for these applications to work fine, you should install an Xbox 360 controller software on your computer.
If you havent installed the software on your computer , you should go to Microsoft to download the software:
1) Go to the Xbox 360 controller for Windows page.
2) Click . Then select your operating system and language. After that, click the file that appears below to download it.
3) Open the file you have just downloaded and install it on your computer.
4) Restart your computer. Then go to Step 3.
If you have used an Xbox 360 controller or installed its driver on your computer previously, you may still need to update the driver as it may be out of date. You can still do this automatically with Driver Easy:
1) Run Driver Easy and hit the Scan Now button.
2) Click the Update button next to the controller to download the latest and correct driver for it.

Configure The Ps4 Controller In Steam
Now that the Steam app is installed and open on your Linux PC, plug in your PS4 via USB to your PC or pair it via Bluetooth by pressingbutton if you prefer.
Once the controller is connected to your Linux PC, go to the Steam app, find the Steam menu and click on it. Then, select the Settings menu inside to access the Steam settings area.
Inside the Steam settings area, find Controller and select it. Then, choose GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS.
In the GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS area, check the box next to PlayStation Configuration Support. Then, scroll down, and you should see Unregistered PlayStation controller. Click it and register it to your Steam account.
With the PlayStation 4 controller registered to your Steam account, youll now be able to use it to play video games in your Steam library, as well as third-party ones added to Steam through the Add a Game feature.

To start, you will obviously need to load up the Steam service. After doing so, you will need to update Steam to the latest possible version, which allows support for Playstation 4 controllers. As a result, games with controller support will now show prompts for PS4 controls in menus, and you should be allowed to customize your controls as you please.
Not only can you use the controller in games, but Steam also allows for users to control some of the program options with the controller. This includes bringing up the in-game Steam menu by pressing the Share button on the controller, as well as being able to control Steams Big Picture Mode when playing games on the television.
