Lets say youve just got a PS5, then your main choice of exclusives are Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demons Souls, costing $49/£49 and $69/£69 respectively on the PlayStation Store.
As getting one game for the PS5 doesn’t really make sense, were going to assume youll want both to get yourself started on Sonys new console. That means youll need to part with $118/£118, which is a pretty hefty amount for two games, one of which is basically an expansion pack to a 2018 game as well as a being available on the PS4 and the other is a remake, albeit a grimly beautiful one, of a 2009 game. Fancy a third-party game, with next-gen graphics? Then you could opt for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which will still set you back $59/£59, though the game has been discounted for the holiday season. While you can wait for game sales, getting a suite of PS5 games to get started with isnt going to be cheap.
Leaks And Rumors Reveal Potential Price Points
We all saw the incredible reveal of the PS5 console and a bunch of games in June 2020, but what about the price? While we dont have a solid answer just yet, multiple sources have suggested what we also believe.
The first is a screenshot making the rounds of an Amazon listing, which suggests the PS5 standard will be 499 euros, and mostly like $499 USD. Take a look:

Well, thats what Im going to talk about today. Heres how a price is made.

Playstation Plus: $59/49 Per Year
If you want to get access to multiplayer games and the online elements of titles like Demons Souls, as well as cloud saves, then you need a PlayStation Plus subscription.
The most affordable way to do that is to pay for a yearly subscription, which will set you back $59/£49 per annum. The Decoy Effect Vs Pushing Consumers Toward Digital
But pricing the PS5 against itself comes down to what is most important to Sony right now. Does Sony want to funnel PlayStation fans into digital ownership or is it more concerned about taking a loss on hardware sales?
Sony may want people to buy PS5: Digital Edition because it gets a higher profit margin from downloads versus physical media. That could serve the company well in the long run.
In that case, expect a $100 difference between the two PS5 variations.
But Sony may just want to guard against losses on hardware. If the PS5 is losing money at $500, which is possible, then the PS5: Digital Edition would lose even more at $400. The company would potentially make up that difference over time, but it may have reasons for desiring profits now instead of later.
In that case, Sony could deploy the decoy effect. The most famous example here is movie-theater popcorn. The vendor sells a small popcorn for $4, medium for $8, and a large for $8.50. In that situation, you dont even look at the small, you think about how you cant pass up on paying just 50 cents more to get a large instead of a medium.
If Sony would prefer customers spend more money upfront on the standard PS5, it could create a decoy effect with a $449.99 price for PlayStation 5: Digital Edition. If the full PS5 is $499.99 and especially if the PS5: Digital Edition is hard to find people will focus on just paying $50 more to get a no-compromises PS5 instead of any comparisons to the Xbox Series S.
Playstation 5s Price Will Say A Lot About Sonys Strategy
Whatever Sony decides, it should tell us a lot about its overall strategy.
If we get systems at $400 and $500, it likely wants more gamers to embrace digital gaming going forward. If it goes with $450 and $500, it wants to compete with Microsoft while maintaining a higher price. And if goes with anything over $500, its only because it is less worried about Microsoft than it is about its own profits for the next several quarters.
Oh, and if it undercuts Microsoft, then who cares what it means? Lets just enjoy saving some cash and let Sony worry about that.

The True Cost Of The Ps: $1044/964 For The Standard Ps5 $944/874 For The Ps5 Digital Edition
When all the peripherals, games, and near-essential extras are taken into account youll be looking at parting with at least $944/£874 for the PS5 Digital Edition, and up to $1,044/£964 for the standard PS5. Thats quite a large amount of money for a gaming machine thats locked into a single ecosystem.
For that amount of money, you can build a decent gaming PC, though youll need to shop around. And PC games are considerably cheaper, with PC gaming offering an enormous amount to play from cutting-edge titles to obscure indie creations to games from decades ago.
But if you want to game at 4K, or at least at dynamic resolutions that scale up to 4K, youll need to spend a fair bit more on a gaming PC. So despite our calculations, the PS5 is still surprisingly good value.
Of course, getting a PS5 right now is extremely difficult as the console has been selling out across the globe. But wait until 2021 when the demand has evened out a bit and you could land yourself a bargain bundle, as well as have a larger selection of games to choose from we believe 2021 is going to be the year of the PS5.

Ps5 Bundles: What To Expect In The Future
We now have more of an idea about what PS5 bundles may look like once that stock settles down, and both FIFA and NBA look like a solid bets for the first few waves of bundles. We’d also look to the season regulars for a safe bet as well, with the likes of Call of Duty consistently occupying bundles, so expect to see to make its way into a few PS5 bundles. We wouldn’t expect to see these bundles until the holiday season, stock issues permitting, however.
Plus, stock permitting, we may also see more accessories included in PS5 bundles later this year. While we’re not likely to see many major discounts, flash sales might offer up a few dollars off an extra controller if we’re lucky.
What Do Analysts Say About Ps5 Price
There hasnt been too much speculation yet about the cost of PS5 to consumers. However, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has suggested that next-generation hardware wont be positioned at $500, citing the failure of previous consoles that have been sold at a higher price point.
I dont think next gen consoles will be $500 though I guess the right answer is, lets see what happens with the Xbox One X, he said.
Microsofts Xbox One X has since retailed at $499 when it launched in November 2017 and has been performing phenomenally according to the NPD.
He also observed that consumers are unlikely to spend money on a console that is priced higher than a new TV, which could last them a decade or more whereas new console hardware usually runs for half that time lifecycle-wise. It will be interesting if this sort of thinking holds up for PS5 and Xbox One Series X too.

Ps5 Price: Compared To The Ps4
When the PS4 released in 2013, PlayStation held the price announcement until the Xbox One had taken the leap first. Once the Xbox One was set at $499 / £429 with a Kinect included in every package, Sony only had to cut the PlayStation Camera from its PS4 bundles to swoop in with a $100 cheaper price tag.
It’s for this competitive reason that Sony was likely holding off on its PS5 price reveal, waiting for Xbox to make the first move again or simply making sure Microsoft doesn’t return the favor in 2020.
So how does the PS5 price compare to that of its predecessors? The PS4 launched for $399 / £350 / AU$599, while the PS3 launched for an astonishing $599 / £425. It was always unlikely we’d see prices reach that high in the US again, though Sony is definitely pitching above the cost of the previous-gen console.
