  • Sony reportedly had to apply for special export permits from the Japanese government over fears that the PS2 could be used for military applications. One oft-cited but erroneous report claimed that former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein bought thousands of consoles for use in weapons development.
  • Some of the first few waves of PlayStation 2 consoles suffered from a so-called DRE hardware flaw, which saw some games and DVDs failing to read at all. This resulted in a lawsuit that was settled out of court.
  • The company also launched a Broadband Adapter for online play as well as a hard drive too. Both accessories plugged into the back of the original PS2s, but this expansion bay was removed when the slimline PS2 launched.
  • One particularly interesting PS2 variant was the Japan-only PSX, which combined a PS2 with DVR functionality and DVD burning. This was also the first PlayStation device to use the Xross Media Bar UI, later seen on the PSP and PS3.
  • The PS2 also offered two popular accessories at the time in the form of the EyeToy camera and microphones for the Singstar karaoke series.

Lead Up To Playstation 5 & Beyond

The PlayStation 5 released on November 12, 2020 in North America & Japan and the rest of the world on November 19. The hype for the PS5 is unparalleled, with every retailer and online store selling out within minutes. In Japan, the PS5 sold 118,000 units in just four days. The only thing holding the PS5 back from making record sales, is supply, which due to COVID this year, has limited production.

When Mark Cerny unveiled the system architecture earlier this year at GDC, he talked about creating a console that is easier for developers to create their worlds without hitting bottlenecks. The addition of a custom SSD and support for Oodle Kraken compression allows developers to implement faster loading and game data streaming never seen before in gaming. Sonys Jim Ryan also backed the notion that the PS5 is the best experience developers have had on any PlayStation console.

One thing that makes me particularly optimistic is, what were hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience theyve had on any other PlayStation platform, Ryan said.

Playstation Portable: Taking On The King

Between the PS2 and PS3 launches, Sony decided to launch the first handheld in PlayStation history with the PlayStation Portable back in 2004. Unlike Nintendo and its conservative approach to handheld power, Sony took the brute-force approach with the PSP by offering a processor that was closer to the Dreamcast and PS2. This resulted in many ports of contemporary home console titles.

The PSP also delivered features like Sonys Memory Card Pro Duo format for storage, a built-in web browser, and a large LCD screen. Toss in multimedia playback functionality and Wi-Fi, and you had a feature-packed handheld for the time.

Sony used the so-called UMD format for games, which was essentially a mini-disc. The upside was this offered almost 2GB of storage space, but the downside was that loading times were absolutely horrible.

Some of the more prominent titles released on the PSP include Lumines, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Persona 3 Portable, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, and God of War: Chains of Olympus.

History Of Playstation 4

The PlayStation 4 was the next evolution in Sonys video-game consoles, improving everything they learned with the PS3. The PS4 was the first of Sonys consoles to release in North America before Japan, launching on November 15, 2013. The PlayStation 4 featured better online support and better system architecture that made development for the console much easier than its predecessor.

The PS4 was the first Sony console to introduce virtual reality with the PSVR headset, using the PS4 camera and PS Move controllers . The PSVR headset has a 5.7 OLED display allowing players to play games in up to 1080p resolution with 120hz/90hz refresh rates. The headset also includes a processor unit which allows for Social Screen video output, 3D audio, and Cinematic mode in 4K or HDR for non-PSVR content on a PS4 Pro. There are over 500 games and experiences for PSVR and the library is continuing to grow.

While the PS4s optical drive doesnt play 4K UHD discs, its still an improvement over the PS3. The PS4 Blu-ray drive features a maximum read speed of 27MB/s, which is about three times the speed of the PS3 Blu-ray drive, which was capped at 9MB/s. This allows for faster game installs, as during the PS4 era, its become common place for you to need to install your games to the consoles hard drive in order to play.

Is Playstation Better Than Nintendo

When it comes to video games, many people believe that PlayStation is better than Nintendo. This is a question that has been debated for years, and there are many reasons why one system might be considered better than the other.

One big reason that PlayStation is often considered to be better than Nintendo is the graphics. Xbox 360 and Wii U are both capable of producing high-quality graphics, but PlayStation 4 and PS3 are able to do so with much more detail. This makes for a more immersive experience when playing games on these systems.

Another big advantage that PlayStation has over Nintendo is the library of games. Sony has been releasing new games for their system every year, while Nintendo only releases new games for their consoles once every few years. This means that there are more options available when it comes to PlayStation games.

On the other hand, Nintendo does have some advantages over PlayStation. For example, they have a larger fan base due to their decades of experience in the video game industry. This means that they are always going to have more developers working on new games for their consoles than Sony will ever have.

Dualshock Series And Sixaxis

Released in 1998, the DualShock controller for the PlayStation succeeded its predecessor, the Dual Analog, and became the longest running series of controllers for the PlayStation brand. In addition to the inputs of the original, digital, controller , the DualShock featured two analog sticks in a similar fashion to the previous Dual Analog controller, which can also be depressed to activate the L3 and R3 buttons.

The DualShock series consists of four controllers: the DualShock which was the fourth controller released for the PlayStation the DualShock 2, the only standard controller released for the PlayStation 2, and the DualShock 3, the second and current controller released for the PlayStation 3, and the DualShock 4, which went through a massive redesign and is the default input of the PlayStation 4, and upon release was compatible with the PS3 originally only via USB and eventually with a firmware update, Bluetooth connectivity was enabled. The Sixaxis was the first official controller for the PlayStation 3, and is based on the same design as the DualShock series .

Playstation Vita: Power > Games

Sony followed up on the PSP with the PlayStation Vita in 2012, and it makes a strong argument for being one of the most technologically impressive handheld consoles of all time. Featuring a gorgeous OLED screen, dual analog sticks, and a slick design, the Vita definitely made a favorable first impression.

The big selling point with the new handheld was a rear trackpad, allowing you to control various elements of a game by touching the back of your machine. For example, the platformer Tearaway allowed you to manipulate the environment, while Borderlands 2 mapped the melee attack to this touchpad.

Sony also implemented some beastly internals derived from smartphones and tablets, featuring a quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU and a PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU. In fact, this is essentially the same GPU as the iPad 3, albeit with a couple of tweaks. Other notable features included a gyroscope, front and rear cameras, and optional 3G connectivity.

The PlayStation Vita originally shipped with no meaningful internal storage, forcing users to buy memory cards to store digital downloads and saves. Unfortunately, Sony opted for expensive proprietary storage media, starting at $20 for a 4GB memory card all the way to $100 for a 32GB card. Even a measly 16GB card retailed for $60 at launch. No wonder third-party adapters surfaced which allowed you to use SD cards.

Playstation : Back On Top Of Things

It seemed like Sony learned its lesson with the PS3, as 2013s PS4 launched at a solid $399 price tag and opted for largely conventional hardware. The PS4 offered an AMD APU, featuring an octa-core Jaguar-based CPU, custom AMD graphics, and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. This was largely similar to the Xbox One, but with Sonys console offering more impressive AMD graphics and faster RAM.

This architecture made the PS4 a very developer-friendly console, allowing studios to hit the ground running and deliver some great titles from the get-go. These games included exclusives like Uncharted 4: A Thiefs End, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Marvels Spider-Man, Gran Turismo Sport, and Ghost of Tsushima. The vast majority of multi-platform games also ran better on the PS4 compared to the Xbox One.

Great exclusives and reasonable pricing meant the PS4 trounced the Xbox One at the sales tills.

One big downer was that the PS4 doesnt support older PlayStation titles such as the PS3 and PS2 libraries. Instead, some PS2 games were re-released as Classics titles for digital download. This was in sharp contrast to the Xbox One, which offered backward compatibility with loads of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles.

Sony also introduced a revised DualShock 4 controller with the new console, featuring a trackpad, a light strip on the back of the gamepad, and a Share button so users can quickly share screenshots and videos.
