Success For Sony Despite Supply Demands
For Sony, said Trading Platform UK’s report, “although it faced a series of delays in some regions, the company managed to circumvent all the pressure and achieve this sales milestone in its history.”
It added: “At this point, the two consoles’ overall sales will be defined by the supply factor that will play out across 2021. However, despite the supply constraints, the new consoles are expected to outperform their predecessors.”
Gaming’s popularity only grew when the population was forced indoors. “With authorities enforcing social distancing and lockdown measures, gaming offered an engaging distraction for people at home looking for social interaction,” said Justinas Baltrusaitis, an analyst at Trading Platforms UK. “This translated into growth for the sector while elevating competition among key players like Sony and Microsoft to meet the new spike in demand. Moving into 2021, it will be vital to see how the industry evolves to retain new users.”
Ps5 Had Biggest Console Launch In The Uk’s History
The PlayStation 5 has broken the United Kingdom’s record for fastest selling console at launch, which was previously held by the PlayStation 4.
It is being reported that Sony’s PlayStation 5 had the biggest launch of any console ever in the United Kingdom when it launched in November. Previously, it was reported that the PS5 outsold the Xbox Series X/S by almost double on launch day, and now it seems that Sony will be able to add another accolade to the new console’s resume.
Since its launch, the console has been notoriously hard to even find due to widespread PlayStation 5 scalping and scamming. Additionally, players who have been able to buy a console have run into a variety of issues such as an annoying rest mode glitch, or their PS5 coming with a louder fan. It has been far from a perfect launch for the ninth-generation console but, in spite of this, it has still sold exceptionally well.

VGC reports that the PlayStation 5 surpassed the PlayStation 4’s record 250,000 launch sales in the UK, breaking an all-time regional record for home console launches. It’s also suggested that the Xbox Series X/S were “significantly” outsold by the PS5 by a margin of around 100,000 units total. However, the report also lets it be known that, “Sony Interactive Entertainment has so far not shared any sales figures for PlayStation 5,” so it is hard to say for sure how many units the PS5 has sold at this time.

When Sony announced Wednesday that it had sold 10 million PlayStation 5 consoles to consumers, it trumpeted the system as “the fastest-selling console in Sony Interactive Entertainment history.” That statement certainly sounds impressive, but it lacks the specificity we need to judge just how impressive the PS5’s sales have been so far .
To add more context to Sony’s announcement, we looked at how quickly some other recent consoles took to sell their first 10 million systems worldwide. While different launch dates and staggered international launches skew some of these comparisons, the data overall shows that the PS5 is selling as fast or faster than some of the most popular consoles of the recent past.
We also looked at newly revealed sales data for PS5 exclusives Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and compared their sales rates to similar early system-sellers on the Switch.

Ps5 Which Is Being Sold At A Loss Has Shifted 45 Million Units So Far
Sony has revealed some important numbers about its games business, and the PS5 launch.
This morning, Sony published earning results for Q3 FY2020. Seeing as that period included the PS5 launch, today’s release has been anticipated.
The platform holder announced that 4.5 million PS5 consoles have been sold since November 13, meaning in just under two months. Sony, of course, previously said that the PS5 launch was its biggest console launch ever. This is all despite the console being supply constrained.
Sony is hoping to sell 3 million more units by the end of the fiscal year, which would mean matching – or slightly exceeding – PS4 shipments over the same period in 2013-2014. PS4 sales, however, continue their decline. Only 1.4 million units were shipped during the quarter.
The company also revealed an interesting detail when discussing today’s results. The company’s operating income took a hit as a result of PS5 manufacturing costs, which is expected, but now we know why. According to Sony, PS5 hardware prices were set lower than they actually cost the company to manufacture, meaning the console is sold at a loss.
It’s not clear whether this goes for both the standard model as well as the Digital Edition. Sony, unsurprisingly, said this was done in order for the price to remain strategic.
Digital software sales amounted to 53%, which is in line with Sony’s recent performance and much of the industry.
What Number Crunching Can We Do In The Meantime
Although we dont have firm figures yet, there is some interesting info in the ether regarding PS5 and Xbox Series X sales stats.
In a recent Xbox Wire blog, Microsoft said the Xbox Series X/S launch has seen More new consoles sold than any prior generation, with Xbox Series S adding the highest percentage of new players for any Xbox console at launch.
But some independent studies have shown that the PS5 is more in-demand than the Xbox in a lot of territories. So does that mean the PS5 will eventually win out in terms of sales?
Only time will tell who the victor is this generation in terms of units sold, but judging by the info were seeing, both camps could end up being pretty chuffed with their results

Its also more difficult to tell how sales can prove that Xbox is the winner here, because of GamePass.
Having the service available on PC, or through the cloud on mobile devices, can skew this, and it makes one wonder whether its the reason why Phil Spencer finds it more irrelevant now.
In 2013, 3.08 million Xbox one consoles were sold, which may be a help in guessing as to what the Series S/X consoles could sell by the end of this year.
We will most likely gain a better idea of firm figures in the new year, but for now anyway, as long as theres good availability of stock for either console, both companies are going to be content with the sales figures.

Stop Trying To Buy Ps5 Digital Stick With Disc
PS5 Digital Edition is tempting, and we get it. It costs $100 less upfront than PS5 Disc and “who needs a disc drive in 2021?”, many people will ask. It’s a good question.
What Sony hasn’t disclosed is how many of the 10 million PS5 consoles were PS5 Digital. Our expert analysis? Not even close to half. Probably a lot less than PS5 Disc. That’s a meanginful statistic.
Here’s why: when American retail stores like Best Buy, Target and Walmart stock both versions of the PS5 console, they always have more PS5 Disc inventory than Digital the latter runs out almost instantly.
We’ve also seen real inventory numbers showing this extreme. Target, right before one recent PS5 restock, had 40 PS5 Disc consoles on hand at several locations in the United States, and one single PS5 Digital. Sure enough, PS5 Digital was a flash of a restock the next day, while many people got PS5 Disc.

We don’t get a breakdown of these figures from Sony. But, judging from reports every single time a fresh wave of console stock arrives, scalpers account for a LOT of these console sales.
What we really need to see from Sony, is how many active PS5 consoles there are. That would tell us roughly how many PS5 consoles are in the hands of scalpers and not in the hands of the people who want to play on them.
This is the crux of the matter and surely kicks sand in the eyes of those unlucky gamers who haven’t secured a PS5 since Sony launched it. Knowing that Sony sold so many consoles will hurt the community when it also knows that a huge number of PS5s are just sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

Will Scalping Ever Cease
As long as the PS5 remains a rare commodity, scalpers will hang around like the proverbial flies that they are, waiting to swarm any PlayStation 5 consoles that arrive in stores within seconds of their availability.
The best thing you can do is NOT BUY from scalpers. That way, it leaves them with a load of inventory they can’t sell, meaning they must reduce the price so that gamers get a fair deal.
For now, it is best to hang on to your PS4 before upgrading to the PS5. Stick it out until Sony solves its supply issues and don’t pay over the RRP for a console.
Playstation 5 Release Date And Availability
In the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, the PS5 went on sale on 12th November. The rest of the world saw the console launch on 19th November.
With demand outstripping supply, most retailers are still struggling to get hold of PS5 stock. And when they do release it, customers – and bots are snapping it up within minutes.

The PlayStation 5 has become Sony’s fastest ever selling games console, the Japanese electronics giant said.
Sony said more than 10 million units had been sold by 18 July since the model’s launch on 12 November, even as it grapples with the impact of a global chip shortage.
That means it has outpaced its predecessor the PS4 – which went on to sell more than 100 million units after its launch in 2013 – by a few weeks in achieving that milestone.
The PS5 boasts better graphics and faster loading times than its predecessor.
Jim Ryan, chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply.
“I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority.”
The console has been boosted by the popularity of exclusive games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which has sold more than 6.5 million copies.
