Either way, everything is new, even the story. Youre-play the events of the same game as if it were another timeline, and mysterious beings are pushing the events towards their original casualties.

Moreover, the game overhauled the combat system. Its an action game featuring real-time action, strategy, and RPG elements.

Xbox and PC players are still waiting for the proper ports. It debuted as a timed PlayStation exclusive, but theres still no word of other versions.

That said, theres a PlayStation 5 version, the Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.

When Square Enix announced that it was making a new Dissidia game in collaboration with Tecmo Koei and Team Ninja, fans were understandably excited. And to fuel the flames of hype even further, Dissida NT was confirmed for a console release. It’s so unfortunate, then, that NT failed to make any kind of lasting impact. Overcomplicated gameplay mechanics, an unbelievably convoluted user interface, and a noticeable lack of single-player content rendered NT undesirable for many to the point where even a huge character roster couldn’t save the experience. The very definition of a missed opportunity.

Which Final Fantasy Should I Play First

We know what youre thinking: With so many games in the series, which Final Fantasy game should I start with first? As it so happens, the games have almost no continuity between releases. Instead, they merely share thematic elements and recurring creatures or character archetypes, such as Moogles or an engineer named Cid.

If you want to check out the Final Fantasy series for yourself, wed generally recommend starting with the newest core game available for whichever platform you own. As of 2021, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the newest release, and its available across PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The classic version of Final Fantasy VII is also available on previous-gen platforms, though its by no means a modern release.

Games Like Final Fantasy You Can Play To Make The Wait For Final Fantasy 16 Easier

Although we’re now coming up on the 16th Final Fantasy game, fans who’ve played ’em all are hungry for other games like Final Fantasy to keep them occupied until the next big entry. And as we’ve done with a lot of popular franchises, we’ve asked one of our resident experts on the franchise to come up with a list of games sure to satisfy.

It’s a little harder to define “games like FInal Fantasy,” as the 34 year-old-franchise has produced a lot of different games with varying styles, gameplay mechanics, and storylines. For that reason, this list includes games spanning several generations, platforms, and studios. That way, whether you think the Final Fantasy 6 defines the series or Final Fantasy 10, you’ll probably find at least one game like Final Fantasy here that suits your tastes.

Final Fantasy 3 Pixel Remaster

New Games: FINAL FANTASY XIV

While Final Fantasy 3 debuted on the NES, it did so only in Japan. A true Western port hadn’t been made available until very recently. There was a fully-fledged remake on the DS, but that’s really its own beast, with extra narrative elements and 3D graphics. If you want a classic experience, then the Final Fantasy 3 Pixel Remaster is the way to go.

Available on Steam, iOS, and Android devices, the Pixel Remaster of this classic freshens up the game’s visuals, while keeping everything else intact. Some quality-of-life elements help to elevate the experience, too, such as an on-screen map and a completion tracker for treasure chests.

So why Final Fantasy 3 in particular? Simply, it was the best Final Fantasy of the NES era and introduced the now iconic Job system which let you swap your party members’ class and ability set on the fly. This means you have tons of freedom to experiment with character builds, without feeling locked into any one class, nor without losing progress on the one you’ve already leveled up.

Final Fantasy Ix 2000

Final Fantasy IX debuted for PlayStation in the year 2000. According to many video game lists, its known as one of the best games of all time.

Similarly, the game has Easter Eggs, allusions to the rest of the series. Moreover, it introduces new features like Active Time Event cutscenes, otherwise known as Quick Time Events. Theres also a complex skill system.

The ninth entry features a medieval-style setting, similar to the earlier games. It takes influence from the first FF title. You follow Zidane Tribal, a thief who found himself on a big plot to take down Queen Brahne, ruler of Alexandria, a malevolent force trying to seize the worlds Crystals.

Final Fantasy

The one that started it all. Youve probably seen the urban legends about this game saving Square from bankruptcy, yadda yadda. What Final Fantasy really did was come running out of the gate into a world of Dragon Quest clones, with ridiculously high production values for the time. You could choose classes, see your party in battle , hear all kinds of different and elaborate musical numbers, so on and so forth. It was a Dragon Quest ripoff with a Hollywood bravado to it, which ended up being the ticket.

Original release – NES

Available on – PlayStation, Mobile, NES Classic Edition

Best on – If youre in Europe, the PSP version is available digitally still, but for whatever reason that never came to be over here. With that being the case, we actually recommend the PlayStation version. You can still get Final Fantasy: Origins on the PS Store for your Vita or PS3, and you get an updated version that still has an old school feel. And it includes the second game too, so its a good deal. If you want all the extra stuff you can go for the iOS version, but you need to have an Apple device, and that game hasnt been updated several screen iterations ago so its a bit creaky. None of the bonuses are in the Android version for some reason, so skip that for sure.

FINAL FANTASY 7 REMAKE PS4 Gameplay Walkthrough Part 1 – FIRST HOUR (Full Game)

This is also higher than Shadowbringers, the other beloved Final Fantasy XIV expansion, sitting at a 9.1 on PC. If were talking all-time high scores, its actually #12 on the list beating out The Witcher 3 with a 9.4, Half-Life Alyx with a 9.2 and both Last of Us games with a 9.2. Granted, those games have many thousands more reviews counted, and the PC version of Endwalker only has a few hundred in, but still, its significant.

The narrative is clear, however, Endwalker is a massive hit for Final Fantasy XIV fans, which does reflect the sentiment Ive seen on social media among players since its release. The launch of the game has caused a surge of the games playercount, though after being in Steams top 10 for a bit, it has mostly been resting inside the top 20. The vast bulk of its players play on the native launcher, however.

Final Fantasy XIV continues to be one of the industrys most impressive turnaround stories, an utter disaster that was reworked into what were seeing here, one of the most beloved MMOs in history creating must-have expansions over time that are still satisfying the playerbase after all these years. As World of Warcraft has dramatically declined, Final Fantasy XIV is new the gold standard for MMOs, and everyone should be looking to its example in terms of what its been able to accomplish with both its turnaround and ongoing content releases.

Dissidia Final Fantasy Nt

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT was first released in Japanese arcades back in 2015 and is the third entry in the once PSP-exclusive Dissidia fighting game series. When the game finally came to home consoles in 2018, it added a few things that didn’t make it into the original release, though also ended up leaving out some content in the process.

The most controversial omissions came in the form of numerous missing game modes, which had been popular in the PSP games that preceded NT. Worse still, the console release locked certain content away behind DLC paywalls. All that aside, it’s actually a pretty decent fighting game, though it perhaps lacks the kind of depth needed to remain relevant for more than a few months.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch

Final Fantasy XIV Online Complete Experience

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is probably up there as one of the greatest JRPGs ever made. It originally released for the DS under the name Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn, but a significantly enhanced similar version with nearly the exact same plot was made for PS3.

What sets the Ni no Kuni games apart from other RPGs is the Studio Ghibli animated sequences and character designs that nodded to past Studio Ghibli animated features. Not only did Studio Ghibli create the look of the game, but their past features inspired the complexity and relatability of the game’s characters and story, as well.

Can I Play Final Fantasy Xv Without Playing The Others

You dont need to play the other Final Fantasy games to understand XV. Theyre all effectively off in individual universes per title, unless part of a group and/or as a sequel. For XV you only need to look at the Final Fantasy XV Universe content including the Brotherhood anime, and Kingsglaive film.

A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy Xv

A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV is a 2D brawler spinoff from the series fifteenth entry. It effectively serves as a prequel to the game and stars Noctis father Regis and his friends who are on a similar journey to the one that his son would later take in Final Fantasy XV.

On paper, a retro-themed Final Fantasy brawler sounds like a wonderful idea, but, sadly, the execution leaves quite a lot to be desired. Worse still, the game doesn’t feature co-op, which, considering the genre and how simple it would have been to implement, seems like a massive oversight on the developer’s part.

Is There An Order To Play Final Fantasy Games

Since the series has effectively no continuity, theres no preferred order in which to play Final Fantasy games. Each one does something a little bit different, but with the exception of FFX-2, none of them follow up on the events of previous releases.

However, many players choose to start the series with the first game and watch its evolution over time. As such, they begin with the original Final Fantasy release and play through the rest of the core games chronologically. Theyll also typically skip FFXI and FFXIV, since those two are massively-multiplayer online games that break from the traditional single-player JRPG formula.

Its quite an undertaking, but if you want to see everything that the Final Fantasy series has to offer, you can work through the core games in this order:

  • Final Fantasy
  • Final Fantasy IV
  • Final Fantasy V
  • Final Fantasy VI sold in the U.S. as Final Fantasy 3, not to be confused with the NES release
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Final Fantasy X
  • Final Fantasy XII
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy XV

The Best Final Fantasy Games Ranked From Best To Worst

    Square Enix Final Fantasy Type

While the role-playing game has become a catch-all genre, now encompassing an almost silly range of games that dont share much in common, there was one video game franchise in the 1990s that was the quintessential RPG. Yes, were talking about Final Fantasy from Square Enix.

The fantasy Japanese RPGs debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, but they became cultural touchstones in the 90s as Super Nintendo games. From there, the series made an incredibly successful jump to 3D on the PlayStation 1 before the mainline series started to take more risks, including the elimination of turn-based battles and massively multiplayer online game entries. Now, many of those same titles in the Final Fantasy series live on the Nintendo Switch and other consoles alongside newer RPGs like Bravely Default and Genshin Impact.

If youre just getting into Final Fantasy, though, where do you start? Most Final Fantasy games are at the very least good, while many are great and others are masterpieces. With the remake of the iconic Final Fantasy VII released a few months back, we decided to rank all of the best Final Fantasy games.
