What Year Did Playstation Come Out

Playstation Portable Fast Facts

The PS Vita is still AWESOME in 2021!
  • The console initially launched with a clock speed of 222Mhz, but Sony later released an update that enabled a 333Mhz clock speed.
  • Sony originally demonstrated the ability to use a PSP as a rearview mirror in an F1 racing game for the PS3, but this feature never made it into a commercial game.
  • Popular online import website Lik-Sang was forced to shut down in 2006 after getting embroiled in a legal battle with Sony. The website came under fire from Sony for selling PSPs to customers in the UK ahead of the official UK launch. Lik-Sang alleged that even Sony executives were importing PSPs from the company.
  • Movies and other video content were also released on UMD, making for a rather interesting use of the format.
  • The PSP was also Sonys first region-free console, which means games bought anywhere in the world would work on your handheld. This was a welcome departure from the norm, when consoles usually restricted you to games from your region .

History Of Playstation 3

The PlayStation 3 launched on November 11, 2006 in Japan and November 17, 2006 in North America. It was by far the most expensive console by Sony, releasing with a $499 price tag for the 20GB model and $599 for the 60GB model due to the new Blu-ray format. The system was highly criticized early on for its high price tag, Sixaxis controller and poorly developed multi-platform games.

The unique Cell architecture was a large hurdle for developers in the beginning, but over time they were able to unlock the full potential of the console. Despite its hardships early on, the PS3 would eventually become one of the highest selling consoles of the seventh generation, selling 87.4 million units.

The PS3 was Sonys first real attempt at online capabilities too. Even though the PS2 technically had online support through a Network Adaptor, the release of the PS3 took things a step further with things like the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, and eventual PlayStation Plus subscription service.

PlayStation Home was fun while it lasted, allowing players to meet in virtual spaces using their own custom avatar. It was launched as an open beta in December of 2008, and eventually closed down in March of 2013. Each user was given a personal studio that users could furnish with free, paid, or won items. Users could explore Homes virtual spaces, from The Hub to various districts like Action District, Sportswalk, Pier Park, and Shopping Centre.

Playstation 3 Super Slim

CPU: Cell Broadband Engine 8-core 3.2 GHzGPU: Nvidia/SCEI RSX 550 MHzMemory: 256 MB

Status: Discontinued October 2016Release Price: $299

The Super Slim version of PlayStation 3 was released in late 2012, refined and redesigned. The console came out on the market with the availability of either a 250 GB or 500 GB hard drive. One of the obvious changes was the sliding disc cover, instead of the traditional slot-loading drive.

In look, shape, and design, the Super Slim version resembles something of a hybrid between the Slim and the original PlayStation 3. The console is much smaller, measuring 11.4 inches wide by 2.36 inches tall by 9.05 inches deep, 20% smaller and 25% lighter than the previous Slim console.

Beyond its smaller size and storage capacities, the Super Slim model doesnt feature anything else. A vertical stand was also available for these models and launched on the same day as the consoles in their respective regions.

Playstation Vita: Power > Games

Sony followed up on the PSP with the PlayStation Vita in 2012, and it makes a strong argument for being one of the most technologically impressive handheld consoles of all time. Featuring a gorgeous OLED screen, dual analog sticks, and a slick design, the Vita definitely made a favorable first impression.

The big selling point with the new handheld was a rear trackpad, allowing you to control various elements of a game by touching the back of your machine. For example, the platformer Tearaway allowed you to manipulate the environment, while Borderlands 2 mapped the melee attack to this touchpad.

Sony also implemented some beastly internals derived from smartphones and tablets, featuring a quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU and a PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU. In fact, this is essentially the same GPU as the iPad 3, albeit with a couple of tweaks. Other notable features included a gyroscope, front and rear cameras, and optional 3G connectivity.

The PlayStation Vita originally shipped with no meaningful internal storage, forcing users to buy memory cards to store digital downloads and saves. Unfortunately, Sony opted for expensive proprietary storage media, starting at $20 for a 4GB memory card all the way to $100 for a 32GB card. Even a measly 16GB card retailed for $60 at launch. No wonder third-party adapters surfaced which allowed you to use SD cards.

Playstation 3 Fast Facts

  • The PS3 initially supported Linux distributions as an alternative operating system, but Sony later killed this feature due to security concerns . Sony was taken to court for this move, with the company eventually settling out of court.
  • Clusters of PS3s were also used for supercomputing purposes, while the project even allowed regular consumers to donate their PS3s power to scientific research.
  • PS3 controllers shipped with gyroscope-style functionality dubbed SixAxis. Unfortunately, the first generation of controllers lacked vibration owing to a lawsuit by Immersion. Sony would explain this omission by claiming that vibration interfered with the SixAxis sensors. The company would later implement both vibration and SixAxis functionality after settling with Immersion.
  • Sony first showed off the PS3 with a so-called boomerang controller in 2005, before reverting to the traditional DualShock form factor prior to launch.
  • Some early consoles suffered from a Yellow Light of Death, which signified the machine was dead. This was a similarly serious failure as the Xbox 360s Red Ring of Death, but on a much smaller scale.
  • Sonys Cell processor was designed in partnership with IBM and Toshiba in a deal worth $400 million. IBM then offered a modified version of this processor to Microsoft for the Xbox 360, according to one of the lead engineers in charge of the Cell project. Yep, Sony essentially funded its competitions processor.

Streaming Video Services And Other Apps

Of course, game consoles can do more than just provide your thumbs with something to do modern consoles are also full-on streaming video players.

Right now, youll find over a dozen supported streaming services on the PS5 including most major services like Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock and Apple TV, as well as a few more niche services like Twitch, Funimation, NFL Sunday Ticket, ESPN, Vudu, Tubi, WWE Network and Crunchyroll.

The selection here isnt as big as youd find on, say, a Roku streaming player, but it should be enough for most folks.

The bad news is that not all of these apps will be available to stream in 4K/HDR: Netflix and Amazon Prime are, at the very least, but it doesnt appear that Disney Plus or Apple TV offer 4K/HDR streaming quite yet.

The worse news is that, as it stands, theres no support anywhere on the console for Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision. We thought we might see them appear on launch day, but neither materialized and Sony appears to be shunning the popular HDR and audio formats for now.

What that means, unfortunately, is that the PS5 is really only a middling media player it cant best dedicated streamers like the Nvidia Shield, , Apple TV 4K or the new Roku Ultra, and isnt the console wed recommend to our cinephile friends looking to host movie night with the highest fidelity films.

Dualshock Sixaxis And Dualsense

PS5 One Year Later | PlayStation 5 Play Has No Limits!

The DualShock series consists of four controllers: the DualShock which was the fourth controller released for the PlayStation the DualShock 2, the only standard controller released for the PlayStation 2, and the DualShock 3, the second and current controller released for the PlayStation 3, and the DualShock 4, which went through a massive redesign and is the default input of the PlayStation 4, and upon release was compatible with the PS3 originally only via USB and eventually with a firmware update, Bluetooth connectivity was enabled. The Sixaxis was the first official controller for the PlayStation 3, and is based on the same design as the DualShock series .
