Playstation 2 Anniversary: Why It’s An Important Piece Of Gaming History

It stands tall as the best-selling console ever – and this week – the PlayStation 2 celebrates its 20th anniversary.

“It was my first ever console and introduced me to gaming,” engineering student, and gamer, Victoria Powell tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

Victoria, 22, is one of the 158 million people who owned a PS2 after it was released in 2000.

It was originally released on 4 March in Japan, with the UK being the third part of the world to get hold of it on 24 November 2000.

“I remember Dad brought it home and me being confused thinking ‘what is this big black box thing?’,” she says.

But it took just a few hours of playing a Peter Pan game on the console for Victoria to realise she really enjoyed gaming.

How Long Ps4 Will Last

While the transition may last three years, its likely that those three years will involve gradually winding PS4 development down, while focusing more on those exclusive PS5 titles. Truthfully, 2021 is likely the last full year where we will see the PS4 and PS4 Pro supported by Sony and third-party developers.

History Of Playstation 4

The PlayStation 4 was the next evolution in Sonys video-game consoles, improving everything they learned with the PS3. The PS4 was the first of Sonys consoles to release in North America before Japan, launching on November 15, 2013. The PlayStation 4 featured better online support and better system architecture that made development for the console much easier than its predecessor.

The PS4 was the first Sony console to introduce virtual reality with the PSVR headset, using the PS4 camera and PS Move controllers . The PSVR headset has a 5.7 OLED display allowing players to play games in up to 1080p resolution with 120hz/90hz refresh rates. The headset also includes a processor unit which allows for Social Screen video output, 3D audio, and Cinematic mode in 4K or HDR for non-PSVR content on a PS4 Pro. There are over 500 games and experiences for PSVR and the library is continuing to grow.

While the PS4s optical drive doesnt play 4K UHD discs, its still an improvement over the PS3. The PS4 Blu-ray drive features a maximum read speed of 27MB/s, which is about three times the speed of the PS3 Blu-ray drive, which was capped at 9MB/s. This allows for faster game installs, as during the PS4 era, its become common place for you to need to install your games to the consoles hard drive in order to play.

Final Fantasy Xi: Seekers Of Adoulin

The Final Fantasy franchise is a classic JRPG epic recognized and beloved by many. This particular expansion was loved by many for its imaginative story, lush locales featuring marshes and murky caverns, and other staple FF elements which are as charming as ever here.

The base Final Fantasy XI game, a fairly overlooked MMORPG, released in May of 2002. However, Square Enix released a DLC of the game called Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin on March 27, 2013. That’s almost 11 years after the release of the original game, and a very late arrival for the PS2 library.

Trying to FIX a PlayStation 2 Slim – No Display on TV

Known as Kurushi in Europe, this is a puzzle game that uses, you guessed it, cubes. The gameplay revolves around clearing encroaching cubes before they reach the player. There are normal cubes, advantage cubes, and forbidden cubes. Seems like this game was inspired by the sci-fi horror Cube .

Honestly, like all puzzles and board games, I.Q. Remix+: Intelligent Qube is easier to understand once youve seen it in action. The game was well-received by critics, who thought it was challenging mentally if not a little graphically underwhelming.

Dualshock Sixaxis And Dualsense

Released in 1998, the DualShock controller for the PlayStation succeeded its predecessor, the Dual Analog, and became the longest running series of controllers for the PlayStation brand. In addition to the inputs of the original, digital, controller , the DualShock featured two analog sticks in a similar fashion to the previous Dual Analog controller, which can also be depressed to activate the L3 and R3 buttons.

The DualShock series consists of four controllers: the DualShock which was the fourth controller released for the PlayStation the DualShock 2, the only standard controller released for the PlayStation 2, and the DualShock 3, the second and current controller released for the PlayStation 3, and the DualShock 4, which went through a massive redesign and is the default input of the PlayStation 4, and upon release was compatible with the PS3 originally only via USB and eventually with a firmware update, Bluetooth connectivity was enabled. The Sixaxis was the first official controller for the PlayStation 3, and is based on the same design as the DualShock series .

Shin Koihime Musou: Otome Ryouran

Shin Koihime Musou: Otome Ryouran was a Japanese video game exclusive to Sony consoles, though it was also released for PC in2008. It was later revised for the PS2 and came out on November 10, 2011 and was developed and published by Yeti.

The game didn’t gain much attention and sales due to it being only released in Japan – though the niche nature of this colorful romp, based on an adult visual novel, likely would have had limited appeal anyway.

The game tells the story of a character who one day wakes up and suddenly finds himself in a different universe. The adventure told is an alternative version of a classic Chinese historical novel called Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

History Of Playstation 2

The PlayStation 2 was announced in 1999 and released in Japan on March 4, 2000, in North America on October 26, 2000. The PS2 went on to sell over 155 million units over its lifespan making Sony a dominant force in the game industry, beating not only Nintendos N64 and Gamecube, but also SEGAs Saturn and Dreamcast consoles. Despite, Microsoft entering the competition with the release of the more powerful Xbox, Sony held onto market dominance.

The PS2 drove the new DVD format to the masses and revolutionized gaming for a new generation. It was by far the cheapest DVD player on the market when the PS2 launched. Not only was it the next-generation game console, but you could also watch movies in crisp 480p on your CRTV with 3 to 5 channel Dolby sound.

While the PS2 had online support, it was severely limited when compared to Xbox Onlines service. You had to buy a PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor and use dial-up or broadband internet to connect to your game which ran on on third-party servers. Eventually, Sony released the PS2 Slim in 2004, which included networking ports on the console. Games like Burnout 3: Takedown, Call of Duty 3, Resident Evil Outbreak, Socom 2 U.S. Navy Seals, and Twisted Metal: Black Online were popular using the online capabilities of the time.

Playstation 2s Price Set The Industry Pace

The PlayStation 2s U.S. launch price of $299 was reasonable enough at the time , but what pretty much guaranteed the PS2s victory was Sonys decision to drop the price of the PS2 to $199 in May 2002.

Microsoft and Nintendo immediately responded to that price cut by dropping the prices of the Xbox and GameCube to $199 and $149, respectively. It was bad enough that those price cuts came just as those consoles were properly entering the global market, but they sent a clear message to consumers everywhere that the PS2 was setting the pace of the console race.

Playstation 2s Dvd Player Advantage Will Never Be Replicated

Its no secret that the PS2s built-in DVD player was a big part of the reason why the console was so successful in those early months and years. DVD players at that time were expensive, scarce, and, rapidly becoming the must-have accessory for anyone trying to keep up with the Joneses. The PS2 simply offered one of the best ways to get one.

Years later, Im convinced that there will never be another multimedia accessory a future console could theoretically include at launch that would have as much of an impact as the PS2s DVD player. The technological world is just different these days, and most people just dont have to rely on a console to get the multimedia entertainment theyre looking for. Just look at the Nintendo Switch. Its breaking sales records and doesnt even officially support the Netflix app.
