Playstation 3 Sells 80m Units: Not Bad But Far Short Of 150m Ps2 Sales

This is part of our ongoing series about games and trends of one of the most longest-lived eras in gamings history the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 generation.
Sony announced today that the PlayStation 3 game console has sold more than 80 million units worldwide since its launch in 2006.
Thats a very respectable number, putting it in a dead heat with Microsofts Xbox 360, which went on sale in 2005. It shows what is possible when a video game console even with heavy price tags ranging from $200 to $600 catches on as a mass market item. If we assumed the average price was $300 per console, then Sony could very well have generated $24 billion in revenue from hardware alone. .
And as Sony launches the PlayStation 4 on November 15, it will continue to tout the PS3. More than 300 games are launching on the PS3 this holiday season, including the highly anticipated Gran Turismo 6 racing game. Gran Turismo as a series has already sold 70 million copies.
As successful as the PS3 has been, the PlayStation 2 did even better, selling more than 150 million units in its lifetime. If we assume the average price was $150 for the PS2, which carried a lower sticker price than the PS3, then Sony may have generated $22.5 billion in hardware sales.

Horizon Zero Dawn has sold over 20 million copies, publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment has claimed.
According to PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst, the game reached the sales milestone in November 2021 from sales of both the PS4 and PC versions of the game.
He also said on Friday that players have spent over one billion hours playing the title, which was developed by Amsterdam-based Guerrilla Games.
The Most Sold Console Of All Time: Playstation 2
Skimming out the Nintendo DS by one million units, the PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console of all time. If Sony was happy about the first PlayStations sales, they were ecstatic about the PlayStation 2s sales. Selling 155 Million Units, the PS2 has surpassed all other home consoles by a wide margin.
The closest one is PS4 and its behind by 40 million units.
Released in 2000, the PlayStation would have a substantial life, being discontinued after 13 years.
To put that into perspective, it was discontinued the same year the PS4 was released.
According to Techidence, the PS2s best-selling franchise was Grand Theft Auto. And the best selling game of all time was GTA San Andreas with 17.33 million units sold.
They also state that Gran Turismo 3 and 4 arent far behind with 14.89 million units and 11.76 million units respectively. PS2 is the most sold console of all time, and only time will tell if another console will ever match its popularity.
Taking a look at the top-selling consoles of all times gives a good insight into how popular gaming really is. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X still being fairly new, only time will tell if theyll place on the top ten list.

Nintendo Switch Passes Wii And Ps1 In Lifetime Sales
As of the end of 2021, the Nintendo Switch has passed several legendary gaming consoles in sales, including the Nintendo Wii. According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, who pulled data from a recent earnings release, the Switch has reached 103.54 million units sold worldwide, passing the extremely high 100 million units mark.
This puts it higher than the original PlayStation, which sold 102.49 million units over its lifetime, and the Nintendo Wii, which sold 101.63 million units. Surpassing the Wii in particular is a milestone for Nintendo, as the Wii is regarded as a legendary success for the company.
The Nintendo Switch has surpassed sell in of 100 million units, reaching 103.54m as of December 31, 2021.
It reaches the 100m milestone faster than the PS4 and Wii .
The Switch has also surpassed the Wii and PS1 in lifetime sales.

Most of the units sold were original Switch models 81.86 million of the 103.54 million total. The Switch Lite has sold 17.87 million units to date, while the newer OLED Switch accounts for 3.99 million units.
The pace of Switch sales is also staggering: the console reached 100 million units faster than both the PS4 and the Wii, and its selling faster than both consoles did at the time. The only platform the Switch isnt expected to surpass is the Nintendo DS. In addition to Switch hardware, a total of 766.41 million units of software for the console have been sold, which has helped buoy the strong hardware sales.

Originally titled , this was the game that launched a juggernaut. As an innocent competitor to the Medal of Honor series, it tapped a base of players that loved the genre but didn’t get enough multiplayer action in other World War 2 games.
To say that it capitalized on its opportunity would be an understatement. Developers for these styles of games have risen and fallen, but none of them have established the empire kicked off by this initial appetizer of what would become the best-selling main course in FPS history. The game had an OK start to life and eventually reached roughly 4.5 million units sold around a decade after its debut.

With all this talk about the coming race between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, I thought it might be time to take a look back and remember what happened this past generation in the console race, and how that might inform the future.
Microsoft, to its credit, has done a great job promoting the Xbox Series X so far with its tremendous horsepower and attractive ideas like buying a last-gen game and getting a next-gen upgrade for free. Sony, meanwhile, has been far more secretive about the PS5, and Microsoft is clearly hoping that they will be able to level the playing field this upcoming generation.
But they have a lot of ground to make up.
While most people may realize that the PS4 won this console generation, I dont think many realize just by what kind of margin.
While these numbers are difficult to parse because Microsoft stopped releasing Xbox unit sales, we have solid estimates from many third parties or other game developers like EA. As it stands, we are about to wrap up the console race with the following totals:

Testing the waters after their first game, had a lot riding on it. The first game, while profitable, could have just been a one-hit-wonder. Without a centralized protagonist to carry the series, developers were worried that the next game would not carry enough of the fans to continue.

At CES 2014, Sony has announced that the PS4 has sold 4.2 million units as of December 28, 2013. Yesterday, Microsoft revealed that it had sold 3 million Xbox Ones as of the end of 2013. It would appear that the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One by some margin, but the bigger picture is actually a lot more complex than that.
Lets break it down. As of December 28, the PS4 had been on sale for 43 days and sold 4.2 million units. By December 28, the PS4 was available in 48 territories. If we divide 4.2 million by 43 days, we get a figure of around 98,000 units sold per day not bad!
As of the end of December 31, the Xbox One had been on sale for 39 days and sold 3 million units. By December 31, the Xbox One was available in 13 territories. 3 million in 39 days equates to around 77,000 units per day.
From these figures, its clear that the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One. Even if you gave the Xbox One another week to catch up, to make up for the PS4s earlier release, wed still only be looking at 3.54 million Xboxes vs. 4.2 million PS4s.
