Which Console Won The Last Generation’s Console Wars
In the interest of fairness, this analysis won’t consider things like how good a particular console’s games are, or a console’s specifications. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all went head to head in a war where the only thing that matters is how many units you sell and how much money you make.
So, while the PS4 might have better graphics than the Nintendo Switch, or Game Pass Ultimate might be better than PlayStation Plus, these factors aren’t something we’ll include in this article. Instead, we will look at statistics that show in black and white which console performed better. For this reason, the sole category we’ll be using for this analysis is console unit sales since launch.
Anyway, without further ado, let’s find out which console eventually won.
Ps4 Has Sold More Games Than Any Other Console In History
Here’s a pretty incredible statistic for you: Sony has sold more PlayStation 4 games than any other console in history. At least 1.577 billion copies of PS4 titles have been sold to customers since it launched all the way back in late 2013 a stat that beats the previous record of 1.537 billion PS2 games out in the wild. And while the record will only increase as time passes, it acts as a statement of just how good the PS4 generation was as we look ahead to what the PS5 brings. After all, it’s already doing extremely well for itself with 7.8 million consoles sold since launch.
While this next stat does also include PS5 titles, it’s estimated that 601,000 digital games were sold every single day on the PS Store across 2020’s fiscal year. And with digital sales commanding a ratio of 65%, roughly 933,000 games have been sold each day when physical purchases are taken into account. Absurd statistics all around. Finally, it’s worth noting that the PS4 console sold a further 5.8 million consoles, taking its grand total up to 115.9 million units. There’s certainly life in the old dog yet, especially when so many upcoming titles are slated for PS4.

This is not how the previous generation played out, where the end result was much closer:
PS3: 87.4 million
Though its not exactly quite as drastic as the generation before that one:
PS2: 155 million
Xbox : 24 million
Microsoft may have some trouble riding into this new generation though with so many Sony fans grandfathered in. Xbox One left a bad taste in many gamers mouths after a very, very rocky launch and Sony still continuing to best them in first-party exclusives, no matter how good Forza has gotten. Microsoft is trying to change that, investing heavily in new games and IPs, but we dont know how long that will take to bear fruit.
And Nintendo, as ever, will quietly putter along, putting everyone else to shame.

God Of War Has Sold Nearly 20 Million Copies
PlayStation and developer Santa Monica Studio announced this week that the critically-acclaimed PlayStation 4 title God of War would finally be coming to PC in early 2022. Alongside making this announcement official after years of speculation from fans, Sony also happened to disclose how many units God of War has sold around the world at this point in time. In short, the sales milestone for the game is nothing short of remarkable and stands as one of the best-selling PlayStation games of all-time.
Disclosed on the PlayStation Blog, Santa Monica Studio’s Grace Orlady confirmed that God of War has already sold close to 20 million copies on PlayStation 4 since arriving back in 2018. To be specific, the total sales for the game currently sit at 19.5 million. Orlady iterated that this total is the amount that has been sold through to consumers as well, which means that the actual amount of copies that have been shipped to retailers is a bit higher. Additionally, this sales milestone is retroactive to August 2021.
Based on numbers that have been publicly revealed, this sales total for God of War makes it the highest-selling first-party title on PS4. Other games such as , Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and Horizon Zero Dawn have all been confirmed by Sony to have sold over 10 million copies as well in the past.

Xbox One Has Sold Less Than Half As Many Consoles As Ps4 According To Ea
Since they were put on sale we have been seeing how Sonys PlayStation 4 is winning sales to Microsofts Xbox One, although today it is not entirely clear what exactly the difference is. Now, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen has given total combined sales figures for the two consoles, which joining Sonys recently disclosed sales figures would leave Microsoft in a difficult spot.
According to Jorgensen, between both companies they have sold a total of 103 million consoles of the current generation by the end of 2017. Sony announced last month that the PlayStation 4 had sold 73.6 million units since its launch in late 2017, leaving Microsoft with a total of 29.4 million Xbox One sold since launch based on total EA figures. Less than half the consoles Sony has sold.
The CFO of Electronic Arts has released this figure during the call received by the press to talk about the financial results of the company, specifically when talking about the state of the industry and its projections for next year.
Looking at our expectations for fiscal 2019, we expect sales of current generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony to continue to be strong, said Jorgensen. With the installed base growing to 130 million consoles by the end of the 2018 calendar coming from 103 million at the end of the 2017 calendar.
How Many Ps5 Sold So Far
How many PS5 consoles have been sold may surprise you, given how tough it’s been to find one ever since the system came out in November 2020.
While it seems like half the world is still searching for a PS5 restock, Sony has confirmed how many PS5 systems it sold as of the end of its latest fiscal quarter: 10.1 million systems as of the end of June 2021.
Sony’s financial figures reveal that the flow of how many PS5s were sold has slowed over time: it reported 4.5 million sales in the third quarter of its fiscal year 2020 , then dropping to 3.3 in the fourth quarter of that year and 2.2 in the first quarter of its 2021 fiscal year.
From what Sony has told us in the past, we can safely assume this is not due to decreased consumer demand for PS5, but instead because of supply constraints. Sony’s manufacturers had time to put together a big initial wave of consoles before it opened up sales for PS5 in November, and ever since, it’s been struggling to keep up with demand. Thankfully, Sony has secured a new source for the semiconductors it needs to manufacture PS5 systems, which should help it speed up production.
Ultimately, Sony aims to sell more than 14.8 million PS5s in its current fiscal year set to end on March 31, 2022 – that’s just this fiscal year, not counting the sales from the launch window, and it’s the same number of PS4 consoles Sony sold in the same time frame for that console.
