More Than Two Years After It Arrived
What just happened? It’s amazing to think that since it launched in November 2020, getting hold of a PlayStation 5 has often required a lot of luck, money, or both, the result of a chronic global shortage of the consoles caused by demand far outweighing supply. But according to Sony, the situation has finally come to an end.
Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, spoke about the PS5 shortages during the company’s CES presentation. “Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward,” he said. Ryan went on to thank fans for their patience over the last two years.
Sony also revealed the PS5’s latest sales figures. Worldwide console sales have now reached 30 million, marking an increase of around 5 million since the last time the numbers were announced in November. That places the PlayStation 5 just behind the Sega Genesis on the best-selling consoles of all time list and close to the Nintendo 64’s 32.93 million lifetime sales.
The chip shortage and lockdowns meant buying a PlayStation 5 in the wake of its launch was almost impossible unless you were willing to pay scalper prices that often doubled or tripled the MSRP. The desperation led to one person being shot during an attempted robbery of a PS5.
Better PlayStation 5 stock levels would help Sony move more of its $549.99 PSVR2 units when they arrive next month, assuming the VR headsets don’t also suffer from shortage problems.

Playstation 5 Stock Shortage
Sony had planned on the production of 5 million PlayStation 5 games consoles by the end of March 2021. But as the popularity of gaming exploded during the pandemic, Sony doubled PlayStation production to meet 10 million units by the same date.
Sadly, it wasn’t enough. In May 2021, the company warned analysts that PlayStation 5 shortages would continue until 2022: “I dont think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldnt be able to catch up with demand,” said Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer.
On 12th November 2021 the PS5’s first birthday Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan addressed historic demand for the PS5 in a PlayStation.Blog post. Ryan admitted that “inventory constraints remain a source of frustration for our customers” and said that Sony is “laser-focussed” on shipping as many console units as possible.
However, in December 2021, Intel chief Pat Gelsinger warned that the global chip shortage would continue into 2023: “Demand exploded to 20% year-over-year and disrupted supply chains created a very large gap it just takes time to build this capacity to respond to the spike.”
In early 2022, Sony decided to keep manufacturing PS4 consoles. The company intends to make an extra one million PS4 machines to compensate for the lack of PS5 stock. It’s certainly one way to tackle the problem.
Playstation 5 Games Price
When NBA games publisher 2K announced the $70 / £65 / AU$100 price for its sports sim NBA 2K21, it effectively confirmed a PS5 games price hike.
The sum helped raise the standard by $10 from $60. You can also stream your favourite games as Sony recently launched an upgraded PS Plus.
To be fair to both Sony and Microsoft, games pricing has remained the same since the launch of the original Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2005. Between game production values having gone through the roof and 15 years’ worth of inflation, it could have been a lot worse for the consumer.

Is It Possible To Make A Ps5
Now, as you might have guessed, following the above guidelines will get you a PCthat matches the performance of a PS5, but it wont be the same thing. Yes, you can get a compact case and even use the DualSense controller for a more console-like experience. However, you wont be able to run PS5 exclusive games, nor will you have access to PlayStation Plus features.
The reasons behind this relate to hardware, software, and game deployment limitations. Moreover, building a system that resembles the PS5 will cost you quite a lot and probably wont be worth it in the end.
Michael Pachter Strikes Again
If youve been a long time reader here on PS5 Gamers, then you know we like to cover industry analyst Michael Pachters predictions as they are both relevant and interesting. Hes not always right, but he comes pretty close more often than not.
The latest news from him is a in June 2019 where he laid down some interesting predictions for Project Scarlett and PS5s price point:
The specs suggest $500 or so, but my bias is that Microsoft will announce $399 and Sony will follow suit.
I would love to see $399, but I find it hard to believe the new systems will go for that low. Its common knowledge that console manufacturers sell systems at a loss in the beginning. They reap the benefits later on when people buy accessories and games.
Even so, with the specs we are hearing about $399 would be a substantial loss. In Microsofts case, if the rumors are true about two consoles at launch , then we could have a base model for $399 and the enhanced for $499 or more, but nothing in the wind points to Sony have multiple consoles at launch.

Ps5 Graphics And Other Specs
The PS5 offers state-of-the-art gameplay without the need to wait minutes on a loading screen, which was a common issue for many PS4 games. Most consoles don’t launch with a full library of games right off the bat, so the launch bar was pretty low for the PS5. That being said, what you make of the PlayStation 5’s current game library largely depends on if you finished the masterpieces from the PS4’s era games like God of War, The Last of Us Part II, , and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
If you haven’t finished them, or haven’t played them at all, you could have over a dozen excellent games to play from the second you turn on the PS5 via backwards compatibility, a number of which have been improved thanks to a 60fps update, like Ghost of Tsushima and Days Gone.
If you have PS Plus, you might also have access to some older games that passed you by, as Sony’s new PlayStation Plus Collection includes 19 defining games from the last generation that you can download on day one. Every PS5 comes pre-installed with Astro’s Playroom, too, and it’s a thrilling showcase for what the system can do.
It’s a nice homage to the PlayStation hardware that’s come and gone, but we expect some folks will play through it, then uninstall it to reclaim the 10GB of storage space it takes up on the console. It has been almost 26 months since Sony released the PlayStation 5. Finally, finally, after two years of high demand and global supply chain issues causing a relatively short supply, the company says it should now be much easier for you to get your hands on a PS5.
“We truly appreciate the support and the patience of the PlayStation community as we managed unprecedented demand amid global challenges over the last two years,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said during a the companys CES keynote. “Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward.
Well have to wait and see if that holds true in the real world, but it should come as welcome news for those who havent been able to snag a PS5 since November 2020.
In recent months, the console has been most readily available as the disc-drive version with a bundled game like Horizon Forbidden West or God of War Ragnarok. That $550 package might be a tough sell if you dont care about either of those games or only want a $400 all-digital version. But hey, it was probably still less expensive than buying a PS5 from a scalper.
