Battlefield V Is A Great If Somewhat Incomplete Shooter Filled With Commendable Ambition
Given the sheer wealth of features that the game will gain just a few weeks after release, you have to wonder whether Battlefield V would have been better of releasing in December because, quite frankly, it would ostensibly result in a far more feature complete offering than what we have here.
All the same what we do have here remains an impressive offering one that is indelibly marked by perhaps the finest multiplayer the series has ever seen and an array of single-player campaigns that while not mechanically ambitious, are still boast more intriguing settings than many of the period-set WWII shooters that have come before it.

Grand Operations And Multiplayer Modes In Battlefield V
Grand Operations is the ultimate multiplayer experience, designed to seamlessly showcase the maps and modes of Battlefield V. Each Grand Operation presents a powerful narrative experience inspired by historical events. You can deploy in Grand Operations at launch and as part of Tides of War, the Battlefield V live service where you’ll fight across other unseen and unplayed battlefields of World War 2.
Grand Operations is our upgraded version of Operations in Battlefield 1 but now much greater than the sum of its parts. This modular experience takes players across fictional in-operation days, where each day is represented by a round played on a combination of a map and mode that brings the narrative to life. The actions you, your squad, and your team take on day one will have a direct impact on the narrative and gameplay start of day two, which in result will impact day three, and so on.
Play well on the first day and deploy with an adequate supply of ammo or vehicles when the map shifts, for example. Do poorly, and you’ll deploy the next day with perhaps fewer respawns, vehicles, or other resources.
Another important change is how each play session ensures all players get to play all featured locations no more getting stopped by an overwhelming defense on that first point. Most Grand Operations in Battlefield V consist of three in-operation days about an hour of total game time but some may last longer if the score is close.

The Game Informer Watch List: Battlefield V
Sixteen years after Battlefield 1942 changed the landscape of competitive first-person shooters with its large-scale land/air/sea battles, the series returns to its original setting with Battlefield V. We fully expect to revisit some of the iconic World War II battles of that landmark title in due time, but rather than simply recreate a greatest hits of big moments from the war, launch content takes players to rarely discussed locations like Norway to recreate battles seldom seen in film or video games.
These battles are enhanced with some of the most polished visuals we’ve seen to date and a new layer of realism applied to Battlefield’s signature destructible environments. Exploding a wall from the interior will send debris shooting outward, and tanks crash through buildings leaving piles of rubbish in their wake.
Battlefield games have always accentuated teamwork, but the fifth numbered entry takes things further with a new attrition system that demands you stick closer than ever to squad mates for ammo and health. A well-honed unit can rack up enough teamwork points to unleash game-changing weaponry like the V1 rocket via the new Squad Reinforcements system.
Battlefield V Takes The Series Multiplayer To New Heights
Away from its single-player offering, Battlefield V clearly does its best work in the multiplayer arena where a number of wide-ranging minor and major improvements have been implemented that make this years game one of the best entries the series has ever seen.
From the off, EA and DICE have clearly learned from the baffling mess that Star Wars Battlefront II was in its first few months, because the micro-transaction driven progression system that plagued that game initially has been stripped out here instead much like Blizzards Overwatch, micro-transactions will only buy you cosmetic gear rather than giving you a bespoke advantage on the field of battle.
Instead, meaningful game-changing progression in Battlefield V is exclusively tied to how well you play which is how it should be. Split between Career Rank, Class Rank, Vehicle and Weapon Rank, each rank represents a different means of progressing and improving your character in Battlefield V. Career Rank is an overall ranking system which when increased by gaining XP through completing objectives and killing enemies, provides an influx of Company Coin to purchase cosmetic items as well as a wider choice of vehicles to choose from when you spawn.
Again however, much like the single-player side of the coin, the multiplayer facet of Battlefield V is missing some key modes that will be released very shortly as free DLC.

In Battlefield V The Single
Chartering three different theaters of conflict within the war, Battlefield Vs single-player focused War Stories aim to depict the smaller, less well-known skirmishes of WWII because after all, there are only so many times you can charge the beaches of Normandy or topple the Reichstag.
Instead, War Stories portrays three lesser known World War II conflicts. Starting with Under No Flag, players are thrust into the role of cockney career criminal Billy Bridger who, fresh from a stint in a prison, is recruited into a special tactical unit that would eventually be known as the British SBS .
Tasked with an incursion into North Africa to destroy Nazi infrastructure, Under No Flag is tonally the lightest of the three War Stories, with the frequent bouts of dry comedy and cockney swears being amusing, but yet also clashing somewhat with the po-faced mood that the other War Stories go to great lengths to establish.
Beyond its comical cockney bluster, Under No Flag is mechanically the most workmanlike of three single-player campaigns, gameplay-wise. Greeted with a massive play area, players must direct Bridger to sabotage enemy airbases, while engaging in pitched battles with Nazi forces that occasionally require you to shoot the odd plane out of the air. Frantic then, though hardly quite as thrilling as it should be.

Is There A Battlefield 5 Single
In a word, yes: there is a single-player campaign in Battlefield 5. The team at DICE understands that while multiplayer action might be at the heart of the Battlefield experience, there are still players who expect or even crave a classic solo story mode. Theyve been present in past Battlefield releases, of course, so its really no surprise to find one here. With that said, at the very least its nice to know that theres still action to be had in those times when multiplayer gameplay just doesnt sound appealing.
Diving into specifics, the single-player campaign in Battlefield 5 will be comprised of individual War Stories. Making their return from Battlefield 1, these missions will see soldiers going to battle across several different global stations, each with their unique roles and a large variety of different weapons.
Of course, Battlefield 5 is meant to be enjoyed with other players, but if all-out competitive multiplayer isnt your thing, the game will offer up a separate cooperative mode. Its called Combined Arms, not only will it support up to four players cooperatively, each crew member will have to work as a team and share in a limited pool of resources. Its not exactly competitive, but it should help work toward a desire for tense action that isnt rooted in multi-player chaos.
