Another patent filed by Sony ) in November 2021 points to real-time image upscaling being brought to the PlayStation 5 including the possibility of PSVR 2 as well. A close comparison for the tech is Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling . The entry pertaining to the VR inclusion reads as below:
“Virtual reality headsets require much higher computing power to display a satisfactory image to a user than a conventional computer monitor. This is because the monitors of a virtual reality headset are much close to a user’s eyes, subtend a much larger angle, and operate at a higher and sustained frame rate,” it reads.
“Providing a virtual reality headset configured according to the method as described above provides the advantage of requiring much less computing power without sacrificing the image quality where is needed most for maintaining user comfort and immersion.”
8K VR hardware
Sony has unveiled a new 8K Device the utilises two 4K displays to create the next-gen viewing experience. This was debuted at its Sony Technology Day event on December 7th, 2021. While not expected to be part of PSVR 2, the tech could be implemented further down the road. The aim of the prototype is to create more detailed images and help reduce motion sickness.
“This is a virtual reality head-mounted display that projects a high-definition 3D space and achieves a high-resolution of 4K with one eye and 8K with both eyes,” said Sony in the presentation.

When Is The Psvr 2 Release Date
No official release date has been announced, though rumors suggest Sony has begun manufacturing the new hardware. Alhough nothing is definite, there is some information based on available evidence that holds some weight. The most credible claim to date appears to be from Bloomberg , who wrote an in-depth article about the current state of screen manufacturers and where the industry is heading.
In the report, Japan Display Inc., one of the leading LCD screen producers, stated that they have a relationship with almost every VR developer in the market. As the VR market is pivoting to LCD screens, Sony is continuing to use the higher quality and more expensive OLED products they used in the original version of the PlayStation Vita and, most notably, the PlayStation VR headset.
What do screens have to do with release dates? Bloomberg claims that people with knowledge of the matter have confirmed that Sony is working with Samsung to develop the OLED screens with a view of a late 2022 release date. However, now conflicting reports say that we are now looking at an early 2023 timeframe. Analysts have reported that Sony wants to wait until after the holiday 2022 season so that there is a larger PS5 install base to sell to. So, while the headset was demoed quietly in March at the Game Developers conference, it is still believed the company has delayed its initial intended release date, and will not begin sales until next year.
Apparently The Release Date Of Sony’s Next
After revealing the PSVR 2 earlier this year, Sony hasn’t come forward with a release window for the next-gen VR device yet.
But, if you believe the recent claims of an analyst, PlayStation VR 2 could enter production as early as later this year, ahead of an early 2023 launch.
TF International Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, had PlayStation fans buzzing after taking to to reveal that Sony could start making PSVR2 as early as in a few months. Kuo adds that up to 1.5 million PSVR 2 units could roll off the line later this year and be ready to hit store shelves in the first quarter of 2023.
The early 2023 release window for the PSVR 2 is also in line with what we’ve heard recently, so it’s not necessarily out of the question.
My latest supply chain check suggests that the assembler and several component providers of PS VR2 will start mass production with about 1.5M units shipments in 2H22. Sony may launch it in 1Q23, depending on the development schedule of PS VR2 game titles.
At the very least, we should find out more about what kind of games we can expect on the PSVR 2 on June 2 as Sony holds its next State of Play presentation.
If we’re lucky, the rumors are true and the PSVR 2’s library will have a Modern Warfare 2 VR mode available as soon as it’s out. When you consider that audiences lap up everything that has on it, the PSVR 2 will sell very well if this happens.

Playstation Vr : First Experience Reports Soon
The Tokyo Game Show will take place from . Capcom writes that you will be able to experience a part of the Dimitrescu Castle. Visitors have to prove that they are 18 years or older with an official ID.
This could be the first event where the public can try out Playstation VR 2. So far, Sony has only shown render images. Accordingly, the first field reports could appear by mid-September at the latest.

Wireless Resolution And More: Sony Research Gives Us Hints At What To Expect In The Future
Sonys research into a successor headset for PSVR 2 dates back years. In mid-2019, Sonys Vice President of R& D, Dominic Mallinson gave a talk outlining what to expect from the next generation of VR headsets.
He outlined devices that boast roughly double the pixel count of then-current headsets and support for high dynamic range, which brings a wider array of colors to the screen. Plus Mallinson pointed towards a wider field of view to see more of the virtual world, and optional wireless support.
Granted, Ryans blog post said the new VR headset connected to PS5 via a single cord, but that might not be the whole story. Mallinsons quotes pointed towards the possibility of two models, or maybe that wire being an option. This was just a prototyping phase, of course, and all that could change, but the hope for wireless isnt completely dead yet.
Not to mention that theres been a steady stream of revealing patents for a potential PSVR 2 over the past few years. Weve seen fillings for new tracking tech, systems for local multiplayer VR and more.

Is The Psvr 2 Backwards Compatible With Psvr Games
In an interview on the official Playstation Podcast, Hideaki Nishino confirmed that PSVR games will not be compatible with PSVR 2 headsets in order to provide a next-generation VR experience.
This is partially due to the hardware differences between the two platforms, with the PSVR 2 relying on an entirely new design of hardware, compared to the PSVR which uses Playstation Move.
We can only hope that some of the PSVRs biggest games, such as Astrobot, receive a working port to PSVR 2.

Beyond the PSVR 2 specs, the headset will have some big new features. The kit will be able to track the direction of your eyes, for example, to use a technique called foveated rendering. This is when an experience only fully renders the area of a screen youre looking at the rest isnt fully rendered but this should be noticeable in your peripheral vision. This should help dramatically improve performance on PS5. It can also be used to mimic your eyes gaze on a virtual avatar. Itll also have a lens separation adjustment dial for people to find the clearest image possible with.

What Games Will Be Available On Ps Vr2
Of course, where would any VR headset be without games to play. There are hundreds of VR options for the original PS VR device.
But we dont know if most of those games will have backward compatibility or not.
UPDATE 9/16/2022 1:30 PM ET: It has now been confirmed by Sony that original PlayStation VR games will NOT work with the PS VR2.
PlayStation recently revealed that the new PS VR2 headset would launch with more than 20 major titles already available. These titles will consist of both first and third-party games.
And we have already had a few games confirmed to be coming to the new platform.
Horizon Call of the Mountainis another entry to the popular Horizon franchise that was the first game announced for the upcoming PS VR2.
Another game currently in development for the device is Runner, an action racing game.
Other games confirmed for development on the PS VR2 include Low-Fi, a cyberpunk action game, and Samurai Slaughter House, a stylized action RPG.
During the Sony State of Play event in June 2022, the company revealed a few more games that will be coming to the PS VR2 headset.
The presentation revealed three new titles: Resident Evil Village, The Walking Dead: Sinners and Saints Chapter 2: Retribution, and No Mans Sky.
There are likely even more games already in development for the device.
Sony will likely plan the release of the PS VR2 so that there are plenty of games to enjoy. And 20+ major titles are definitely a good place to start.
The First Psvr 2 Game Has Been Announced
Sonys CES announcement wasnt just for a name we also saw the first-ever PSVR 2 game confirmed. That game is Horizon Call of the Wild, a spin-off to Sonys popular open-world series set in a post-apocalyptic world with robot dinosaurs. Its been developed by Firesprite, the studio behind The Persistence that Sony acquired in 2021, with help from Horizon developer Guerrilla Games. You can see the first trailer for the project above you wont be playing as series protagonist Aloy but you will meet her as you take on the role of an entirely new character. A release date for the PSVR 2 exclusive hasnt been confirmed.

Sony’s PSVR 2 is confirmed to be heading our way, but the big question is, when is the release date?
We’re here to keep you updated with everything we know, from the latest leaks, rumours, and anything else which can give you some insight as to when Sony’s next-generation of VR headset will hit the shelves.
Psvr 2 Price Speculation
As far as the pricing goes, the original PSVR initially launched at $499 for the full set, which was a bit pricey for the average consumer at the time. It’s now down to $349, packaged with newer PlayStation VR games such as Iron Man VR. The core set, with just the headset, was $100 cheaper, but it’s increasingly hard to find one of those in the wild.
It’s unlikely that Sony is going to release a PlayStation VR headset that costs more than the system again. The Oculus Quest 2 is a relatively affordable $299, while the Oculus Rift S costs $399. Sony wants to grow its VR fortunes, and it feels like the new PlayStation VR will probably not break $499.
It’s likely that Sony will take on Oculus directly and land at the $399 price tag. Combined with the $500 price of the PS5 itself, that still brings the entire next-gen PlayStation VR platform under the price of the Valve Index, which can cost as much as $999 with accessories and trackers. We can only hope that by the time of its release, the global chip shortage will improve, and the next-gen PSVR will not be affected by scalper pricing.

Sony Could Be Seeking Hybrid Aaa Vr Games For Psvr 2
Okay, onto the games. So far the only officially confirmed PSVR 2 game is Horizon Call of the Mountain. But, at its August developer conference, Sony reportedly said it was appealing to bigger, AAA game developers to implement VR support into their titles as an option. PSVR 2 will of course support native VR titles too, but this could be a path to seeing other, bigger games in VR, much like PSVR 1 enjoyed Resident Evil 7, No Mans Sky and Hitman 3.
Were already seeing titles that look primed for PSVR 2. Resident Evil 8 returns to the first-person format from the VR-supported Resident Evil 7 and, although its already out, PSVR 2 support later down the line seems like a possibility. Gran Turismo 7 is also an obvious choice, while Sony has teams with great VR experience like Blood & Truth developer Sony London and Stormland studio Insomniac working away too. Combine that with support for third parties and PSVR 2s potential line-up already sounds promising.
It remains to be seen, however, if the headset can play old VR games.
Is It Worth Buying Playstation Vr In 2022
Of course, you don’t have to wait to play PSVR. You can play it right now. As detailed in my review, the headset experience is really great. It’s a brilliant way to play games. But since its launch in 2016, more cost-effective VR technology has emerged that is worth considering. It’s no longer the lay down misère it was originally as a result.
In this writer’s opinion, if you own a PlayStation 5, it’s tough to justify the full expense of a PSVR headset in 2021. It’s not a native fit for the console and you will need to get an adaptor cable just to get the old PS4 camera to work with the console. Plus, you know that sometime soon, it will be superseded by a genuine PS5 PSVR headset.
If you’re still playing on a PS4 with no plans of upgrading to PS5, then it’s a different story. It’s well worth the investment. And you’ll likely be able to find one, or at the very least the Move controllers and/or PS4 camera, second-hand at a reduced rate.

The PS VR launched in 2016 for £349 / $399 but you can find bundles priced at $349.99 in the US, and for £259.99 in the UK.
It’s likely that the new PS VR2 headset will sport a similar price tag of around £349 / $399.
That’s not cheap by any means, and even though there are a number of hardware upgrades, Sony is going to struggle to make customers want to fork out any more than that.
On top of that, there’s the price of the PS5 console itself which you need to play PS VR 2.
And then there’s the standalone Oculus Quest 2 which doesn’t need any additional hardware and starts at a much more wallet-friendly £299 / $299.
So Sony is going to need to keep the price within the realms of the reasonable.
Given the competition’s price tag, and factoring in the cost of its own console into customer’s set-ups, matching the original price of the PS VR seems to be the best option.
What About The Ps Vr2s Design And Specs
Sony has gradually teased details about the new VR hardware, giving us a look at the headset and the Sense controllers and dropping a few technical specs, but were still waiting for a comprehensive spec rundown.

The world of VR has grown exponentially in the last few years, and Sony has been at the forefront of it from a games perspective, launching the original PlayStation VR headset back in 2016.
Now that the PS5 has entered the market, Sony has confirmed that its next-gen virtual reality device is on the way officially known as the PlayStation VR2.
