However, new PS3 title listings that include Dead Or Alive 5, Bejeweled 3 and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands feature an accompanying price tag, indicating that the games are downloadable and playable directly on the current-gen console.
The listings could also be tied to Sonys rumoured Xbox Game Pass-like subscription service codenamed Spartacus.
Spartacus is rumoured to feature three tiers: the first will offer a standard PlayStation Plus subscription, the second reportedly gives access to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles and the third features a library of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games, game streaming and demos.

In Sonys recent system architecture deep-dive, Mark Cerny the consoles lead System architect revealed the PS5 will be backward compatible with last generations PS4 library. During the presentation, Cerny claimed that it would work with nearly all top 100 titles from the previous generation console. Then, in a later blog post, the company revealed the console will support the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles. This includes the older consoles VR library.

That means the PS5 will tout one of the best games libraries in history right out of the gate. On top of that, Sony claims most of these backward compatible PS4 titles will likely benefit from higher, more stable frame rates and higher resolutions on the PS5. Unfortunately, the company cant guarantee every game will work, though it has already tested hundreds of titles with thousands more to come.

In the case of games from the PS3 era, its to do with the actual architecture of the consoles hardware namely the PS3s infamous cell processor. For PS2 and earlier consoles, however, emulation seems to be the easiest route. If rumors of Sonys new PlayStation subscription service are true, we may get to see more classic PlayStation games on the PS4 and PS5 sometime soon.
In other news, Sony revealed that it will continue to make over 1 million PS4s in 2022 amid a shortage oif PS5s. Its also rumored that the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake will feature God of War-like combat instead of its previous turn-based combat.
Ps5 Backwards Compatibility Tech Is Likely Years Away
There were some rumors that PS5 would utilize cloud computing to achieve backwards compatibility, which makes a lot of sense. Based on the Road to PS5 deep dive event Sony hosted earlier this year, we know that the PS5 only has native software capable of emulating PS4/PS4 Pro games. Any backwards compatibility beyond that would require custom emulation programming that could theoretically be patched into PS5, or through cloud computing via servers like on PlayStation Now. The likelihood of a patched-in emulator published for PS5 is probably slim, considering the feasibility is slim and the likelihood for piracy and/or hacking unsupported games is high.
Delisting that information from Ubisoft’s support page does seem to be a big hint that cloud computing for emulation could be on the way, but for now this is likely technology that’s still in development. Backwards compatibility on Xbox was in development for years before it was announced, so it’s likely a similar case with PlayStation. Not to mention the highly customized software and firmware in consoles like the PS3 that were notoriously difficult to optimize games on compared to Xbox 360. Expanded backwards compatibility could eventually make its way to PS5, but considering we haven’t heard about it at all yet, it’s likely a technology that’s a few years away at least.

The tweet from PlayStation_Jp reads: “#Kenshi Yonezu x #PlayStation. Kenshi Yonezu worked on a new ad for PlayStation. 1-2-3 is PlayStation’s icon. Booting on January 23”.
A short video is included in the tweet. The four PlayStation DualShock controller buttons appear, followed by the name Kenshi Yonezu in kanji, and lastly, the date January 23 is displayed. Note that this date is also written “123”. This could be another sign that PS1, PS2, and PS3 backward compatibility is coming to PS5.
