Ps4 Pro Ssd Upgrade Guide: Get Ps5 Level Storage And Speed Now

Out-store and out-load the Xbox One X by upgrading your PS4 Pro hard drive with a PS5 level fast and capacious SSD

ByRobert Joneslast updated 24 September 20

A steady stream of a Sony PS5 console rumours and reports have already got T3 incredibly excited for the next-generation system, which promises to be a PS5 games playing powerhouse that far outstrips even today’s best video game consoles such as the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.

However, there is a way you can get a taste of next-gen today, by upgrading one of today’s most powerful consoles with a faster and more capacious storage drive. By swapping out the maker’s bog standard hard drive with one of the best SSD storage drives on the market, you take your system up a level and allow PS5 games to load faster and install far more of them, too, even if they are hundred gigabyte-plus AAA beasts.

And, as we feel you should always look to squeeze every last drop of performance out of your technology, here we’ve decided to upgrade a PS4 Pro console, which is the Sony system many PlayStation gamers will be relying on to take them up to the launch of the PlayStation 5.

Want to make your PS4 Pro load games and applications faster as well as boast the ability to store many more games, too? Then read on and follow our simple, pictorial PS4 Pro hard drive upgrade guide.

    Ssds Vs Mechanical Hard Drives

Before we swapped out the PS4s hard drive with an SSD, we tested the hard drive that the system came with by measuring the amount of time the PS4 needed to boot up to the screen where the OS asks you to press the PS button on your controller. We tested it twice and got times of 27 seconds and 24.9 seconds.

Once we replaced the PS4s stock hard drive with an SSD, we ran the boot tests again and got boot times of 19.2 and 19.4 seconds with the SSD in there. So, boot-up is roughly 5-8 seconds faster with an SSD than with the mechanical hard drive that the PlayStation 4 ships with.

If you dont think thats significant, remember that loading save games, levels, and more will also get substantially faster. Over time, those shaved seconds will make your PS4 feel a lot faster.

Case : Ps4 External Hard Drive Stopped Working Suddenly

In this case, you were able to use the external hard drive on your PS4 without any problems before it stopped working suddenly. Similar to the Case 1, the PS4 external hard drive might also be defective here. So, you should also troubleshoot hard drive errors and confirm whether you need a replacement for the hard drive at first.

If the PS4 hard drive is fine and can work properly on other devices, you can try fixing the issue with the following solutions.

How To Replace The Hard Drive On Your Ps4 Pro

The PS4 Pro hard drive is functionally almost identical to the PS4 for replacement purposes. The only real differences are in the location of the hard drive in the chassis and the shape of the mounting bracket. First, follow steps 1-6 above. Before beginning, be sure your PS4 is powered down and unplugged.

The Pro Hard drive is hidden behind this panel on the back of the PlayStaton 4 Pro.The tab to gently remove the plastic is near the Ethernet port. Pull the tab to reveal the HDD bay.

You will see a single screw. Remove it carefully with a Phillips-head screwdriver to open the bay.

Slip the hard drive out. You’ll now need to remove it from its mounting bracket by unscrewing the four screws holding it in position.

Replace the hard drive with your new drive in the mount, matching up the mounting points and gently replacing the screws.

Slide it gently but firmly into the HDD slot and secure the screw into the PS4 Pro case, then replace the plastic panel. Then proceed with steps 12 and beyond from above. Make sure you have that Flash drive near by!

    Solid State Hybrid Drive

PS4 1 Terabyte Hard Drive Upgrade – Step by Step

This is an innovative solution meant to be a compromise between speed, capacity and price. With this hard drive solution youll get nearly the performance of SSD and the capacious space of HDD. All for an adequate price thats usually not $10 higher than a regular hard drive.

Solid state hybrid drives, or SSHDs, are a blending of the traditional hard drive and the new solid state drive technologies. If you have been looking at upgrading your PS4 internal hard drive, you may have come across the term SSHD. This is a new marketing term that was coined by Seagate to essentially label what had previously been referred to as hybrid hard drives. This new term can lead to confusion in the market as buyers can mistake these for full solid-state drives .

So an SSHD is basically a hard drive and SSD in one, which is why its called hybrid. The drive appears as a single device to PS4 system, and the SSD part is just used for temporary storage to speed things up: your data is stored long-term on the mechanical disks.

    SSHD for PS4

An SSHD is still slower than any SSD, but its a good chunk faster than a plain old hard disk. Basically, if you want lots of storage at a reasonable price, an SSHD is a good choice. If your priority is speed and you want PS4 system to be more responsive, go for an SSD.

The SSHD is the best PS4 hard drive replacement for the majority of users. As for enthusiasts and power users, an SSD is the priority.

    Three: Uncovering The Hard Drive

Once you are happy you’re not about to wipe out your gaming history, make sure there’s no disc in the drive and turn the PS4 off completely . If your PS4 heads to standby as standard, hold down on the PS button until the power menu pops up, then select turn off PS4. Next, unplug all the PS4’s cables .

Set the PS4 on a steady surface, put a hand on the shiny top plate and move it to the side a little. This is actually a simple plastic drive cover that’s not held in place with screws but a basic clip.

Once it’s free of its moorings, you’ll be able to lift the cover off to reveal part of the PS4’s metal skeleton. There’s not much damage you can do here, though, as it’s just the hard drive on show.

To uncover the hard drive within the PS4 Slim, unclip the plastic cover by hand. This clip can be found on the left-hand corner of the PS4 Slim at the rear of the console.

With the plastic clip removed you’ll see the hard drive caddy of the PS4 Slim secured with a single screw.

To uncover your PS4 Pro’s hard drive, simply place the system upside down on a flat surface and locate the small plastic panel on its rear. Use the little tab beside the Ethernet port to pop the panel off.

With this cover removed you’ll see the hard drive caddy and the single screw holding it in place.

    • Because they are optimized for your system they give your system better speed performance
    • More types of hard drive options
    • SATA connections are faster and more reliable than USB connected devices

Restore Your Data To Your New Drive

    • If you followed the steps correctly and everything went smoothly, you should now be asked to sign into your PlayStation account using the setup wizard. Skip through most of it until you arrive at the familiar PS home screen.
    • Insert the USB drive with your backup files.
    • Navigate to Settings, scroll down to System, then move down and select Back up and Restore. Select the Restore PS4 option.
    • Once youve arrived at the Restore PS4 screen, you should see your backed-up files on the inserted USB drive. Select the backup. Youll be taken to a confirmation screen. Take heed of the warning screen, then select Restore. Do not remove the USB drive or manually shut off the system for any reason.
    • At this point, the PS4 Pro system should shut down, apply the update, restart, and if all goes well display your original home screen, with your accounts, games, captures, saves, and the like.

Congratulations! You just expanded the storage of your PS4 Pro and kept your files intact in the process!

How To Replace Or Upgrade Your Hard Drive On Ps4

    Materials:

    • USB Flash Drive
    • 2.5 inch serial ATA hard disc drive

    Directions:

    1. Go to playstation.com, and find the most recent system software. The current page for this is here: or here: . Scroll down and look for this section:

Download the 700-800 MB system recovery/new install software. The most recent download is this one, if you’re having trouble finding it on your own.

    2. Test your USB drive with your PS4 first. Make sure it plugs snugly into one of the USB ports on your PS4 — some drives are too fat and can’t be inserted all the way. If your drive works, move on to the next step.

    3. Plug your USB drive into your computer. You can use a PC or a Mac, but you have to make sure the USB flash drive is formatted as FAT or FAT32 to avoid issues. Most flash drives come preformatted and should be ready to go, but if you want to be sure note that erasing and formatting your drive only takes a few seconds and the system may return an error with other formats. On a PC, right-click the drive and select Format from the menu. On Mac, use Disk Utility and erase and reformat using MS DOS and Master Boot Record scheme.

    3. Create a folder titled PS4 on the flash drive. Create another folder titled UPDATE within that PS4 folder.

    7. Remove the left side of the PS4 case by simply depressing it and sliding it to the side, as shown.

    That’s it! Congrats.

Install The Ps4 Pro Firmware To Your New Hard Drive

After physically replacing the hard drive, you will need to install the Playstation OS on it. To do this, head to the Playstation 4 System Updates page.

At the bottom of the page is a tab labelled Perform a new installation of system software. In this section you will find installation instructions and links to download the base firmware for the PS4 Pro.

While your update file is downloading, take your USB drive and format it to either FAT32 or ExFAT. Create a folder called PS4, then another called UPDATE nested inside it. After the update finishes downloading, make sure the file is named PS4UPDATE.PUP and place it into the “Update” folder.

Insert the USB drive into the PS4 Pro, then boot the console in Safe Mode. Do this by holding down the power button until you hear a second beep. Once in the Safe Mode menu, select Initialize PS4 .
