A new restock of the PlayStation 5 took place at Best Buy today, and while it didn’t come without its problems, it largely turned out better than many expected. This is primarily because, this time around, Best Buy opted not to release its latest stock of the PS5 behind a paywall. And while there’s always a chance that this paywall could return in the future, the lack of its appearance this time around led to some customers finally being able to purchase Sony‘s console.
Not long after this PS5 restock at Best Buy began today, social media began lighting up with reactions from customers who are still looking to snag the console prior to this holiday season. In a general sense, more customers seemed to be finding success than normal. However, that success was also entirely dependent on where any given person looking to purchase the console may be residing.
At this point in time, in order to actually pick up the PS5, customers have to live within a certain proximity of a Best Buy store that is carrying the hardware. So if you don’t happen to live near a store that has the PS5, you might be out of luck. Although Best Buy has previously run back this rule in certain situations, most PS5 restocks play out in this same manner.

The Sony PlayStation 5 is in such high demand, in fact, that retailers are using the console to sell memberships to their new premium shopping subscription services. Today’s PS5 restock at Best Buy was limited to those with Best Buy Totaltech Memberships — a service that costs $200 per year.
Walmart’s latest PS5 drop, similiarly, is limited to Walmart+ members. A Walmart+ premium membership includes early access to Black Friday deals, free two-day shipping, prescription drug discounts and more for $98 per year.

Best Buy Hasn’t Had A Ps5 Restock In 42 Days No Wonder
The last PS5 restock date at Best Buy was August 12, which was 42 days ago, as of today, Thursday, September 23. This gap came after the retailer had almost weekly stock of the Sony console, fooling everyone into thinking Best Buy restocked every week. It’s been ever longer since it has sold Microsoft’s Xbox Series X if you don’t count the Halo Infinite-themed console, last selling the regular Xbox Series X on July 14.
It turns out, those overdue shipments of both consoles started filtering into stores late last week, in time for 7am local time today, September 23.
How it worked before: Best Buy would normally hold PS5 and Xbox at regional warehouses and ship to stores only after online purchases were made. Customers, after ordering online, would pick up their consoles three to five days later in Best Buy stores. There was transit and processing lag stemming from when it went from warehouse and to store.
The process today: Customers can line up outside of select Best Buy stores across the US , and some people are already in line. This process makes it harder for bots to scoop up the PS5 and Xbox console inventory from Best Buy’s vulnerable online ordering system .
Ps5 Restock Dates Last Week Vs This Week
Last week was a very good week for PS5 restock news. We saw the Sony console at Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target and Antonline in the span of four days. This week is a different story we had the long-awaited , but little else.

Technically, Sony Direct restock had a restock on June 23 but the virtual queue was for people with a special email invite. It never opened up the virtual queue to everyone else at 5pm EDT yesterday, although we did live stream a PS5 restock Q& A off the back of the virtual queue not happening.
There was a GameStop Xbox Series X restock, and three additional places had the console all yesterday. So PS5 restock events have been lagging behind this week with the exception of that Amazon PS5 restock. Newegg did have a PS5 Digital bundle in stock this week alongside the Newegg Shuffle GPU restock, but that was also a lottery system, and a much smaller one.

First, no, Best Buy will not ship the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles to your doorstep. That hasn’t happened in 2021 at the retailer, and we don’t expect things to change in 2021.
