Microsoft’s disc-based Xbox Series X console retails for $499 / £449 / AU$749, while the standard PS5 is also $499 / £449 / AU$749. It makes choosing between an Xbox Series X pre-order or a PS5 pre-order bundles a tough choice.
One of the reasons the PS4 proved the more popular console during the last generation was the fact that it launched at a more attractive price point of $399.99 / £349.99. That was a relative steal compared to the $499 / £429 Xbox One, which at launch had to factor in the cost of its ill-fated Kinect motion tracker. The Kinect was initially hailed as one of the key differentiators between the consoles, but proved unpopular with both developers and gamers, leading to Microsoft slowly phasing it out in an effort to drive the price of the overall package down with later console revisions.
Neither has made that mistake with their new consoles making the top-tier versions identically matched. It’s the digital-only versions then where the real differences become visible.
The digital-only Xbox Series S lands at $299 / £249 / AU$499 while the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition comes in at $399.99 / £359.99 / AU$599.95.
But it’s not a like-for-like comparison. Microsoft’s digital console is weaker than the others it focuses on 1440p resolution instead of 4K, and targets 60/120 fps. With the PS5 Digital Edition, however, it’s exactly the same spec as the standard edition just minus that physical disc tray.

Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X retail for $499 in the U.S., albeit with a cheaper PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in production, which cuts the price to $399. Budding Xbox owners wanting to save on next-generation gaming will need to consider Xbox Series S, which delivers much of the same but targeting HD TVs over 4K resolution. But the biggest challenge right now is their availability, with limited stock dominating the conversation around these devices.
The new Xbox and PlayStation consoles are hard to find in early 2021, with limited supply and record demand fostering a challenging landscape for buyers. Recent restocks continue to sell out in seconds, with a thriving resell market valuing the consoles with high price markups. That’s expected to continue throughout the year, only worsened by current world events.

Xbox Series X is Microsoft’s new flagship, as its most powerful console with over 12TF GPU performance and a custom SSD. It boasts up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS, full backward compatibility across four generations, and ray-tracing support.
Which Console Should You Go For
It’s a tight race between the two with both having their strong points and some very minor inconveniences.
For pure ease of use, the Xbox Series X couldn’t be simpler. It’s backwards compatible with both games and hardware, gives you a ton of power, and is a bit of a one-stop-shop for all your entertainment purposes.
PlayStation is more of a game-led machine and boasts some impressive exclusive titles that you won’t want to miss out on, but with that being said, you’ll have to wait a while for them to arrive.
This is one case where you could flip a coin and either side is a winner.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X: Specs
In the battle of the spec sheets, the PS5 appears to lose out against the Xbox Series X. Both have 8-core CPUs from AMD, but the Xboxs are clocked at 3.8GHz while the PS5s are 3.5GHz. Both consoles also use AMD graphics processors, with the Xboxs providing 12 teraflops of power to the PS5s 10.28 teraflops.
Both consoles use SSDs rather than mechanical hard disk drives, with Microsoft offering a terabyte of storage to the PS5s 825GB. But the way Sony has designed and integrated the PS5s storage makes it so fast that it essentially boosts overall console performance.
But neither console uses that power to deliver 8K. Despite 8K being mentioned at various times by both companies in the run up to launch, it’s simply not an option in the menus of either machine. Instead, in both cases 4K at 60Hz is the performance target, with 120Hz and/or some fancy next-gen graphical features available via some games.
Of those next-gen graphical features, it’s ray tracing that’s most significant. This new technology massively improves lighting, shadows and reflections, and has the potential to transform almost everything you see on screen, making games look vastly more realistic. Both consoles support it.
ALLM and VRR are becoming more common on TVs, and the latter in particular is a real boon for gaming. Only the Xbox Series X currently supports these, though. Sony says VRR is on the way for PS5, but hasn’t provided a date and hasn’t even mentioned ALLM at all.

The time has finally come. After the longest-lasting console generation in the modern era of games, the new next-gen is finally here in the form of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

This isnt like previous generations of console wars, which have tended to usher in a resolution revolution, because the leap to 4K and HDR was taken care of by the mid-generation Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. You might expect 8K to therefore be the big news here, particularly as each manufacturer suggested as much in its early marketing, but 8K is in fact not supported by either console.
Instead, the Xbox Series X and PS5 represent the frame rate and ray tracing revolution. Games are still in 4K, but they run faster, feel more responsive and look significantly prettier.
To some, that will sound like hot air, and the case against the new consoles will only solidify when we reveal that you dont need to buy one of them in order to play the latest games. With some notable exceptions, every game that you can play on a next-gen machine will also play on its predecessor.

It has been just over a month since both next gen consoles launched within days of each other, and a bunch of people are about to get one or the other over the holidays, if theyre lucky.
But comparing the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which one has gotten more use? And were early complaints or concerned things that lasted over the long term? And how about the games?
I figured Id go through my time with both and see where we landed after this first month.

PlayStation 5 is obviously going to drastically outsell Xbox Series X and S globally and it has already set records for being the fastest-selling console in history. And thats with supply being heavily, heavily limited, as Im sure youre well aware.
The technical issues I ran into at launch on PS5 have mostly disappeared. The game was frequently crashing games so hard it would reset my entire unit, but after a number of hotfixes, I have not seen that happen for several weeks now, and that seems to be mostly resolved. Crashes in general have gone down.
I have grown to appreciate the DualSense controller even more, and have come to realize a lot of my issues with it were Godfalls poor controls rather than anything that was the controller itself. Still, there are not very many games that use it to its full extent yet, and we will need more dedicated offerings to make use of all the haptics over time.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X Controller And Features What Are The Big Selling Points
The Xbox Series X has Quick Resume, a feature that allows you to swap between the active states of six different games at once. Kept running by the internal SSD, its a feature that has had a huge impact. Instead of having to wait for a title to load, and then sitting through an array of menu options, youre thrown straight into the action.
Im blown away by how well it works, even maintaining my suspended states after the console has been unplugged for an extended period of time. Combine this with fantastic loading times and the whole experience feels wonderful, and a noticeable step ahead of the competition when it comes to backward compatibility. The PS5 is lacking such a feature right now, and I didnt expect its absence to be so notable.
In terms of the controller, Microsoft has taken a more conservative effort with the Series X. The design remains virtually unchanged from the previous generation, with small additions coming in the form of a share button and a more textured grip for added comfort. It feels nicer to use, but its certainly a case of if it aint broke, dont fix it from Xbox and, in all honesty, who can blame them? All your previous controllers and accessories will work, too!

In terms of other new features, the PS5 is relatively thin on the ground, adopting a moment-to-moment experience that feels very familiar. This is no bad thing, but those hoping for a massive departure might be underwhelmed.

Oof, man, really putting me on the spot, huh? As you can see from the above, there are benefits to both controllers. For versatility and battery life, you really cant beat the Xbox controller. Meanwhile, the PS5 controller packs in modern features that will make playing certain games a lot more engaging . For sheer audacity and ambition, it feels like the PS5s DualSense has the edge here, but if youre looking for a multi-platform workhorse, go with the Xbox controller.

Microsoft builds upon the Xbox One controller, now with added functionality for Xbox Series X.
Microsoft unveiled Xbox Series X alongside the latest revision of its controller, building upon the proven Xbox One design with further enhancements. The signature addition is a new dedicated “Share” button, mimicking the feature popularized by the PlayStation 4’s DualShock and the Nintendo Switch. The key enables fast video and screenshot capture and sharing, building upon the Game DVR from Xbox One.
That pairs with a new hybrid D-Pad inspired by the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller, circular-shaped with five defined square surfaces. Textured trigger grips come standard, which makes a huge difference compared to Xbox One.
Speaking with Xbox leadership, GameSpot also detailed an “ever-so-slightly smaller” controller silhouette for Xbox Series X, in response to user research. While a subtle change, Microsoft hoped to nail down ergonomics across the broadest range of Xbox buyers. The proprietary Xbox Wireless protocol also returns, extending efforts to reduce input latency.
Like the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller, the Series X controller features USB Type-C however, it takes AA batteries. Rechargeable batteries packs are compatible but optional.
The next PlayStation controller, named the DualSense, introduces new advances in haptics.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X Design How Do They Look
Each of these consoles is pretty large, far eclipsing the weight and form factor of their predecessors. This is for good reason: this amount of room is required for housing the impressive specs found within. Still, it doesnt make the job of finding either console a home easy. Lets break down the dimensions of each one below.

Xbox Series X dimensions and weight: 150mm x 150mm x 300mm/4.4kg
The angular design of the Xbox Series X will make it far easier to fit into existing entertainment centres or under a desk, where it can sit flush against a wall or shelf without much trouble. It can also be positioned on its side if you so desire, but leave enough space for air to vent out through the fans situated at the top.
While it resembles a desktop more than a traditional console, the design conventions of the Series X resemble what came before it, pushing the colour scheme and other elements Microsoft has pursued for years to their logical conclusion. If youre after something a little more outlandish and daring, then the PS5 more than fits the bill.
It towers over the Xbox Series X, making it look tiny in comparison. Its monolithic, boasting an unusual shape that makes it difficult to fit under your television or desk, regardless of orientation. Thankfully, Sony provides a stand, which makes setting it up much easier and also ensures theres less risk of it accidentally tumbling over.

Theres Still Stock Available If You Dont Wait Too Long
The Series S was great in my situation, but it seems like a solid option for a number of other scenarios, too. It travels well, as it fits in just about any luggage or even a carry-on bag along with a controller, a power cable, and an HDMI cable. And for me, it was a gaming lifeline. It handled Psychonauts 2 beautifully at 60 fps, and it did the same for the recently released Diablo 2: Resurrected and Aliens: Fireteam Elite. And the recent multiplayer beta for the upcoming Halo Infinite ran at double the default frame rate of the Xbox One version of the game. None of these games were as sharp on a 4K TV as they would have been on a more powerful system, but they ran well, and they looked good enough.
If youre giving a gaming gift, the best present isnt the platonic ideal of a perfect, powerful gaming consoleits the system that someone can play games on right now. And the Series S is more than enough to play great games for years. It will likely get harder to find as the holidays approach. But for now, you can find it fairly regularly without much effort, and without pulling your hair out.

Thanks to the global chip shortage, silicon to produce cutting-edge hardware like the PS5 and Xbox Series X is simply hard to come by. Microsoft and Sony both are selling through all of their stock of the PS5 and XSX near instantaneously, as soon as they hit shelves. The Xbox Series S by comparison uses less powerful internals, which are easier to source in an economy desperate for chips for anything from electric vehicles to smart toasters.

Why You Should Buy The Ps5 Or Xbox Series X
The problem with arguing for a dedicated gaming machine in the console vs PC debate is that a PC does far more than just play games. For example, you cant build and run an entire home business from it or research and study for a university essay.
This throws any potential argument about cost-effectiveness out of the window. Even if it was cheaper in the long run to buy a new console every five or so years which isnt the case if youre a savvy shopper a PC is a far more versatile machine than a games console.
Nevertheless, consoles do have some advantages over PC. Lets start with the obvious one the games.
Incredible initiatives like Game Pass and Play Anywhere mean that all of the genuinely great exclusive Xbox One games can be played on a Windows machine. Likewise, Sony has committed to bringing more fun to PC. Weve already seen this with Horizon Zero Dawn and the otherwise PS4-exclusive Death Stranding.

However, there are plenty of fantastic console games you just cant play on PC. From just the current console generation, a PC-exclusive player would miss out on incredible PlayStation 4 games like The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2, Bloodborne, God of War, Persona 5, Uncharted 4, Shadow of the Colossus, Marvels Spider-Man, The Last Guardian, and many more.
