With the PS5 apparently coming into our homes before the end of the year, you’ve got to wonder about the PSVR.
Mostly, will the PS5 even have VR, and if it does, what will that look like?
Will Ps Vr2 Have Better Tracking
Sony is utilizing what’s called inside-out tracking for the PS VR2. This is the same tracking method used by the Oculus Quest 2, and utilizes four cameras on the PS VR2 headset to track the headset’s position in the room, as well as the controllers themselves.

Each controller has a series of IR LEDs that can be seen and tracked by the cameras on the headset, which are used in conjunction with the six-axis sensors inside each controller and the headset itself. This means that any movement in real life will naturally translate to VR as you would expect from a modern VR headset. Gone are the days of the extremely limited PSVR single-camera tracking.

The Exceptions To The Rule
While you can play PSVR on your PS5, for the vast majority of games the DualSense controller won’t work. But in certain situations, it will. If you are looking to play a game that only uses the PS camera to track your movements, then you can use the PS5 controller. PSVR uses blue light to track the DualShock, and it can’t track the DualSense controller. But games like Skyrim VR Resident Evil 7 VR, and Dirt Rally, don’t need this feature. They won’t benefit from the features of the DualSense, but they will be playable.
So there you have it. It isn’t a perfect solution, but with the new PSVR on the horizon, Sony will be keen for people to adopt the new tech, rather than keeping the older version. It will also be designed to take advantage of all the features of the PS5 in a way the original PSVR just can’t. In the meantime, you can still enjoy your PSVR on your PS5. You’ll just be better off using a DualShock controller.
What Is Ps Vr2
So far, Sony has announced the PS VR2 in a strangely piecemeal way. The first PS VR2 announcement was a bit light on details, but the reveal of the PS5 VR controllers gave us a much better look at what to expect from Sony’s second-generation VR system, and the CES 2022 PS VR2 announcement finally gave us a proper name and specs for both the headset and controllers.
The PlayStation VR2 or PS VR2 as we like to call it will connect to the PS5 with a single cable and can be used to interact with virtual reality content on Sony’s next-generation console, which will include games, movies, and social features.
The PS VR2 will ship with a brand new, redesigned headset, including new motion controllers called PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers that feature headset-based tracking, adaptive triggers, and multiple input methods for the ultimate VR experience. It is not known at this time whether Sony plans to offer a wireless version in the future.

Are There New Psvr Controllers For Ps5
No, not yet at least. It is expected that Sony will release a PSVR 2 at some point in the next couple of years, and with that headset, well likely see a new tracking system and new controllers. Theres a chance, mind you, that these controllers could be released before the PSVR 2 with some compatibility with the original PSVR and its games. Theres no official word on the matter and that is just a guess from me, but I think it would be a great little earner for Sony, and a welcome move from PSVR owners sick of the PS Move wands.
Move On From The Move
The current PSVR headset makes use of the PlayStation Move controllers, and these motion wands are really showing their age.
Originally released to compete with the Nintendo Wii in 2010, the PlayStation Move controller has not aged gracefully. Aside from looking like an over-priced glowstick youd buy at Disney World, the single-camera tracking offered is just not precise enough to compete with the level of control possible on alternative VR headsets like the HTC Vive Pro 2.
Its been theorized that Sony retrofitted the PlayStation Move to become a VR controller in order to get rid of a mountain of unsold stock, but thankfully Sony has confirmed it wont be iterating on them for PSVR 2.
In March, Sony showcased the new PSVR 2 controllers and they look like a dramatic improvement on the PS Move. These orb shaped controllers offer a high degree of free movement, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, finger touch detection, and make use of a tracking ring, which should allow for vastly superior motion detection.
Plus, these controllers sport actual analogy sticks, which could make the point and click movement systems often used in PSVR games a thing of the past. This is another upgrade that might seem small at first but will be a game-changer when the PSVR 2 actually launches.
Im extremely eager to learn more about the PSVR 2. Based on whats been confirmed so far, and some of the rumors floating around, it could be the PlayStation VR setup Ive been waiting for.

Connect Your Playstation Vr Camera
The first step to hook up and setup Playstation VR is to connect your camera to your console.
First, place your camera above or below the center of your TV and point it centrally out into your room. Your camera will be able to track and watch your movements while you play virtual reality. Tracking is important, so make sure the camera is pointed at your play area clearly.
Plus the cameras cord into the matching port on the back of your Playstation console.
If you are trying to hook up to the PS5, you need the extra Camera PS4-to-PS5 adapter cable. to have Sony send you this adapter for free. When you receive it, plus your camera into the adapter and then the adapter into a USB port on the back of the PS5.
Does The Original Playstation Vr Work With The Playstation 5
This is an interesting question, and it has a somewhat complicated answer. The short answer is yes. However, you will need to order an adaptor from Sony to link your PlayStation 4 camera to your PlayStation 5 since the current generation camera is not compatible with the original VR headset. It gets more complicated again when you begin considering software compatibility. With the PlayStation 5s improved processing speeds, original PlayStation VR games run smoother when played through the current generation console.
Many VR games come in a PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 version, and the PlayStation 5 updated versions do not work with the original PlayStation VR. In these cases, as with popular games like No Mans Sky or Resident Evil VII, you will need the PlayStation 4 version running on your console to play them in VR.
There are also several PlayStation 5 VR games in development as dev kits for the new system went out at the start of 2021. At a developers conference held in August, Sony tried to woo developers into creating games for the new hardware. When released, these titles will not be compatible with the old VR systems. Sony is also reportedly encouraging developers to integrate VR compatibility into their big main console releases. Big titles like Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo appear as if they were developed with VR in mind.

According to Sony, the PS5 console does support PSVR games. But in the small print, they state that:

While this doesn’t state that the DualSense won’t work, it does make it pretty clear that you won’t be getting the optimum experience for the PSVR. Most, if not all, of the games were designed before the DualSense existed. This means they won’t have been designed to benefit from any of the features of the new controller.
But more definitively, the DualSense was not designed for motion-sensing games. In other words, any game that needs to track your movements, will not work with the DualSense controller. In most cases then, a DualShock controller will be needed. So is that the end of the story? Well, not quite.

Before Starting Make Sure Your Controller Is Compatible With Psvr
The controller included with your PS5 is not compatible with PSVR. Most PSVR games use the PS4s standard DualShock 4 controller because of its VR tracking capabilities.
Many games are also compatible with the PSVR Aim controller or the use of two PSVR Move motion controllers. A few games necessarily require two PSVR Move trackers, so theyre not compatible with the DualShock 4 or the PSVR Aim.

Will The Ps5 Have Vr
If Sony doesn’t release a VR headset for the PS5 then they’ll have missed a great opportunity to help stand a little bit taller than the competition.
Of course, there is a chance that the current PSVR will be compatible with the PS5, but it would also make a lot of sense for Sony to design something that can keep up with the new console.
This is almost essential because there really needs to be a redesign of the controllers used for it. The move controllers lack the functionality of something like the Oculus Touch, so upgrading those is important.

Will Ps Vr2 Be Wireless
At launch, the PS VR2 will not be wireless. A single USB Type-C cable will be used to plug the PS VR2 headset into the PS5 using the USB Type-C port right on the front of the console. That’s a huge upgrade from the original PSVR, which required a separate processing box to be plugged into power, HDMI cables to be routed to the box from the console, and several cable connections from the PSVR headset itself.

Will I Be Able To Play Native Ps5 Vr Games On The Psvr Headset
While some sites suggest that youll be able to play upcoming VR titles designed for the PS5 platform using the first-gen headset, thats likely not the case. Sony has confirmed the existence of a new VR headset tailored for the PS5, unofficially dubbed PSVR 2, that will likely be the only headset supported by the majority of new titles going forward.

Will Dualsense Work As A Psvr Controller
Unfortunately, whilst Sony’s latest controller is a marked improvement over its predecessor, it isn’t the best controller for PS5 when it comes to VR.
As the PSVR headset is fundamentally a legacy offering, it makes sense that the original controllers are the ones that work. For this, you’ll either need a DualShock 4 controller, or a PlayStation Move, if you’ve still got one.
