Again, the PS5 can’t play PSP or PS Vita games. There are some exceptions: Patapon was remastered for PS4, and as such is playable on PS5. Microsoft this week revealed that many games from its old Xbox 360 console will be playable on its newer Xbox One later this year. But, don’t expect rival Sony to follow suit with a similar announcement anytime soon.
This idea of “backward compatibility,” in which gamers can play older titles on a new gaming system, is a big benefit for players, since it means all their favorite games from years past aren’t made obsolete when they trade in their old console for a new version. This feature can also help gamers save money, too, because they don’t have to repurchase old titles that work on the new machine.
Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox at Microsoft, said at the E3 gaming conference this week that backward compatibility was one of the most requested features for Xbox owners.
“I didn’t think it was possible. There must be lots of engineering effort,” Yoshida told Eurogamer about the Xbox backward compatibility.
Why Cant Older Games Be Played On The Ps5
Theres a reason why backwards compatibility for PS3 games on newer consoles is so difficult: the inner makeup of the PS3 system is wildly different from that of the PS5. This makes it a waste of time to make PS3 games playable on the newest console.
The PS3 ran on a unique processing system, making it extremely difficult to replicate and emulate. The PS4, in comparison, is more compatible with the PS5. And, since there are already many ways to play PS3 games on the latest consoles, Sony hasnt felt it imperative to take up such a difficult task.
As for even older consoles, their systems are even further removed from the PS5, so Sony opts instead to change and remaster the individual games themselves instead of making a difficult change to the console as a whole.
