It appears that I need a new Xbox One controller. The left bumper is only intermittently responsive and while most games don’t use it much, I don’t want to deal with it. This will be my second replacement controller after my Day One Edition controller started registering double inputs on the D-pad.
I’ve also replaced a PS4 controller this gen and I had several PS3 controllers die on me with wandering sticks and non-functional shoulder buttons.
I don’t throw controllers or otherwise abuse them, though, of course, I have been known to jam on a button excitedly or to accidentally drop a controller or knock it off a table or something from time to time. Nothing specific happened to cause the left bumper to stop responding I think it was just normal wear and tear.
I’m wondering how often people expect controllers to last. I think it’s like razor blades in that it’s kind of hard to tell how long they should last, but they definitely do wear out It kind of sucks but there’s not a lot you can do about it other than treating them well.
So how long do you expect yours to last?
P.S. I know people are going to tell me to try and fix the controller myself with various tips and tricks but I am pretty clumsy and have never had success at that kind of thing. It’s not THAT expensive to replace a controller, it’s just annoying.

What I find myself doing if my PS4 controller is running out of juice is simply switch to my second PS4 controller and charge the old one while I continue to play games.

To adjust the time delay before your DualShock 4 automatically shuts off, go to the PlayStation 4s Settings menu and select Power Save Settings. From there, youll see options for automatically turning off the console itself as well as rest mode, and underneath that is what youre looking for: Set Time Until Controllers Turn Off. Change this to the lowest setting, 10 minutes, to minimize the drain on your battery when you take breaks, and during passive activities.

Are There Faster Ways To Charge A Playstation 4 Controller
There are definitely faster ways to charge your Playstation 4 controllers, and it all boils down to plugging them into a wall outlet rather than the PS4. For one, youre getting more juice out of a wall outlet. For two, you can use charger bricks with a higher charging capacity.
For instance, Apple iPads come with a charging brick thats rated at 20w, versus the 4w you get from plugging directly into the system. It will shock you how quickly a 20w charging brick with a micro-USB plugged into it will boost your charging speed.
Most of the time, with a 20w charger, you can have your PS4 controller fully charged and ready to go in half an hour, if not faster.

Sony has officially detailed some of DualSense’s next-gen features.
Firstly, the PS5 controller will replace regular rumble with far more advanced haptic feedback. Instead of the whole controller vibrating as we’ve all become accustomed to, it will be capable of providing a wide range of different tactile sensations. For example, if you’re playing a platformer and you’re running around on ice, you’ll be able to “feel” that the surface is slippery. Testing out a version of Gran Turismo Sport running on a PS5 dev kit, Wired’s Peter Rubin explains he could feel the difference of two different surfaces simultaneously. “Driving on the border between the track and the dirt, I could feel both surfaces,” he said. Haptic feedback should make for much more effective immersion.
Next up is adaptive triggers. The L2 and R2 buttons on a PS4 pad are fine, but what if you could feel the resistance of a taut string on a bow, or the clink of pulling the trigger on a gun? That’s what the DualSense PS5 controller will be able to provide. The triggers on the PS5 controller will “offer varying levels of resistance” to further cement you in the game’s world. This combined with the haptic feedback should achieve some pretty amazing results.
DualSense also replaces the PS4 controller’s Share button with the Create button. We don’t know too much about the difference here, but Sony says it will provide “new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world”.
