Why Does My Ps4 Controller Die So Fast

PS4 Controller Life Tips!

PS4 controllers have a lot going on. They have the light bar, speakers, vibration motors, and a default setting to stay on for as long as the system is on. All of this will kill your battery quickly. On the bright side, there are some fixes.

  • Reduce the brightness of the light bar
  • Turn off the vibration function
  • Remove the default always-on setting
  • Replace the battery with a stronger one

Most of these things can be taken care of in the settings menu. For the light bar, bring up the quick menu, select DualShock 4, and reduce or eliminate the light.

You can reduce or eliminate the vibration and turn down or turn off the speakers in the same menu:

  • Go to the Settings Menu
  • Select Devices
  • Uncheck the box for Enable Vibration
  • Adjust the volume under Volume Control

Doing all of those things will help extend the battery life for your DualShock 4 controller in between charges. If you really want to get crazy, you can also change the battery that came with it.

The PS4 controller comes with a built-in, 3.7v Lithium-Polymer, 1000mAh battery. There is a way to replace it if youre comfortable completely disassembling your PS4 controller.

Youll want to purchase a thoroughly well-researched 2000mAh upgrade and follow the tips from this link to efficiently replace it without damaging the controller.

Replace The Battery On Your Ps4 Controller

The final way of improving battery life on your PS4 controller requires getting your hands dirty.

The PS4 controller has a 1000mAh battery, but you can buy a 2000mAh DualShock 4 replacement battery and install it yourself. Its not as tricky as you might think, and will double your controllers battery life, although it will void the warranty.

You might struggle to find an official version of the battery, so if you do buy a third-party unit, make sure its good quality by checking reviews.

What Is The Difference Between Dualshock 4 And Dualshock 4 V2

In early September 2016, Sony confirmed a second version of DualShock 4 controllers, known as the DualShock Version 2 , which hosts slight improvements over the original DualShock 4, including USB communication, a longer battery life and the ability to see the light bar from the top of the touchpad.

Poll How Long Do You Expect Your Controllers To Last

It appears that I need a new Xbox One controller. The left bumper is only intermittently responsive and while most games don’t use it much, I don’t want to deal with it. This will be my second replacement controller after my Day One Edition controller started registering double inputs on the D-pad.

I’ve also replaced a PS4 controller this gen and I had several PS3 controllers die on me with wandering sticks and non-functional shoulder buttons.

I don’t throw controllers or otherwise abuse them, though, of course, I have been known to jam on a button excitedly or to accidentally drop a controller or knock it off a table or something from time to time. Nothing specific happened to cause the left bumper to stop responding I think it was just normal wear and tear.

I’m wondering how often people expect controllers to last. I think it’s like razor blades in that it’s kind of hard to tell how long they should last, but they definitely do wear out It kind of sucks but there’s not a lot you can do about it other than treating them well.

So how long do you expect yours to last?

P.S. I know people are going to tell me to try and fix the controller myself with various tips and tricks but I am pretty clumsy and have never had success at that kind of thing. It’s not THAT expensive to replace a controller, it’s just annoying.

What I find myself doing if my PS4 controller is running out of juice is simply switch to my second PS4 controller and charge the old one while I continue to play games.

You can even get one of these charging stations that can charge two controllers at once, so if you happen to go through both controllers, you can charge both of them at the same time and be ready to go for the next marathon gaming session.

Can I Use My Playstation 4 Controller When Its Charging

How Long Does It Take To Charge A PS4 Controller

Now that we know how long it takes to fully charge a PlayStation 4 controller, you might be wondering if you can continue to use your controller while its charging.

That way, you can continue to game uninterrupted while your controller is charging.

You can still use your PlayStation 4 controller when its connected to your PS4 and charging as it will still function. With that said, using your controller while its charging will increase the time it takes to fully charge. Additionally, over time the charging port on your controller could become damaged due to movement when using it.

With that in mind, I wouldnt recommend using your PlayStation 4 controller when its charging. Instead, take a break from gaming or invest in a second controller to swap out. This will get the most out of your PlayStation 4 controller and help it to last longer.

What Does A White Light On Ps4 Controller Mean

The PS4 controller flashing white issue is generally caused by two reasons. One is because of the low battery, and that means that you need to charge your PS4 controller to make it back on track. The other reason is that your controller is trying to connect to your PlayStation 4, but failed due to unknown factor.

Why Do Some Ps4 Controllers Batteries Last Longer Than Others

How Long Do PS4 Controllers Last?

Sony never made a huge announcement concerning their DualShock 4 controllers. However, they did quietly release a second version on September 15, 2016. The battery listed for v2 of the Dualshock 4 is exactly the same as the previous iteration.

Fortunately, though the batteries are nearly identical, Sony made some tweaks to the v2 DualShock 4 that extended the battery life. So you may happen to have a 2nd generation DualShock 4 and never realized it.

Lasting longer was the goal, and Sony accomplished the mission with their 2nd generation rollout. However, when it comes to charging, two hours worth of battery juicing remained the same.

So regardless of which version you own, it will still take roughly two hours to charge a PS4 controller on a 4w charger or directly plugged into the PS4s USB port.

Change Your Controllers Shutoff Time

Occasionally, we all use our PlayStation 4 for something other than gaming. When youre watching movies on Netflix or a stream on Twitch, you dont necessarily need to keep your DualShock 4 powered on the whole time. To preserve the controllers battery life, make sure the controller is set to shut off as quickly as possible when it is isnt in use.

To adjust the time delay before your DualShock 4 automatically shuts off, go to the PlayStation 4s Settings menu and select Power Save Settings. From there, youll see options for automatically turning off the console itself as well as rest mode, and underneath that is what youre looking for: Set Time Until Controllers Turn Off. Change this to the lowest setting, 10 minutes, to minimize the drain on your battery when you take breaks, and during passive activities.

You can also find these settings on the systems quick menu, brought up by holding the PlayStation button in the center of your controller, so you can easily adjust the delay without having to exit your current game or application.

How Long Does A Ps4 Controller Last

This informative post will help you understand how long it takes, what you can do to keep your life, and what to do if you break !

So How Long Does a Ps4 Controller Last? A PS4 Controller will last for more than seven years if you do not destroy the circuit inside the controller.

At the seven-year milestone, you will notice that the battery life for your PS4 controller starts to decrease from 8 to 6 hours per charge.

The joysticks might grow less sensitive depending on the care of the user or develop stick drift. Any difficulties with hardware can quickly be resolved using internet guides to help your controller last for life.

What Tends To Deteriorate First

  • Battery Life: PS4 controllers are like phones- the battery life is the first thing you notice change the older they get. This isnt something that can be prevented, but rather slowed down . Even if the battery life declines by a couple hours per charge, you can still use it to last you the entirety of a gaming session. Our PS4 controllers are 6 years old, we simply plug them in the charge after every session instead of leave them lyingaround. We recommend charging docs since you cant get a controller that comes with batteries. .
  • The Analog Joysticks: People who are exceptionally rough with their controllers or dont store them properly after use will probably notice a decline in this aspect . Stick drift in one sentence: when the controller naturally causes a slight movement in one direction because the analog sticks do not naturally set in their zeroed out position. The best and easiest thing you can do to prevent this for a lifetime: store your controllers in an upright position where they wont get tumbled around. When I traveled a lot for work I kept one of my xbox controllers in my backpack a lot and they got kicked around when they were in there. I noticed I started getting stick drift when I would use it but I was still able to play games just fine.

*Stick drift is where one or both of the joysticks will cause in-game movement even when theyre supposed to be resting in a neutral position where the player isnt touching either of them

Never Worry About Battery Life Again

While you are always going to have to charge your DualShock 4 controller, there are gadgets that will help prevent interruptions in gameplay. First, we recommend buying a DualShock 4 controller charging station. They are very affordable and easy to use. Just pop your controller on the charging station after very session to make sure the battery is always topped up.

If you dont want to invest in a charging station or dont trust yourself to actually use it, do yourself a favor and grab an extra-long micro USB cable. This way you can charge your controller while sitting comfortably on the couch, all without interrupting your your game. If you really despise the idea of cords, you could opt for an external battery pack for your DualShock 4. There are a few different ones on the market, but the external batteries by Venom are officially-licensed products.

How Long A Charge Will Last

Weve come a long way since the trip hazard wired controllers era. Modern controllers slung the snaking cables in the trash to fully embrace wireless technology. But with wireless convenience comes a reliance on battery packs and AA batteries.

The PS4 controller is no exception to that model and it is powered by a battery pack that comes built into the controller. It is a standard 1000mAh battery pack that lasts for 4 8 hours while its overall capacity slowly reduces with each recharge. Battery deterioration is an irreversible chemical process that is normal for Li-Ion batteries. But, you can slow the process down by maintaining the battery. Heres how you can make the battery last longer:

Are There Faster Ways To Charge A Playstation 4 Controller

There are definitely faster ways to charge your Playstation 4 controllers, and it all boils down to plugging them into a wall outlet rather than the PS4. For one, youre getting more juice out of a wall outlet. For two, you can use charger bricks with a higher charging capacity.

For instance, Apple iPads come with a charging brick thats rated at 20w, versus the 4w you get from plugging directly into the system. It will shock you how quickly a 20w charging brick with a micro-USB plugged into it will boost your charging speed.

Most of the time, with a 20w charger, you can have your PS4 controller fully charged and ready to go in half an hour, if not faster.

The only drawback to charging your controller from the wall outlet is that you cant forget and leave it there. Playstation 4 controllers are not known for their batteries blowing up, but there is such thing as overcharging and damaging your battery.

Sony has claimed that the DualShock 4 controllers batteries stop charging at 100%, so there can be no overcharging. In practice, though, it does have a dramatic effect on the longevity of the battery.

To help minimize that problem, you can purchase a charging dock that has a battery level indicator, such as the HyperX ChargePlay Duo. You can still plug it into a 20w charging brick, and now youll know when the charging process is complete and when to remove the controller.

Ps5 Controller: What New Features Does It Have

How Long Does the Astro C40 Wireless Controller Battery Last?

Sony has officially detailed some of DualSense’s next-gen features.

Firstly, the PS5 controller will replace regular rumble with far more advanced haptic feedback. Instead of the whole controller vibrating as we’ve all become accustomed to, it will be capable of providing a wide range of different tactile sensations. For example, if you’re playing a platformer and you’re running around on ice, you’ll be able to “feel” that the surface is slippery. Testing out a version of Gran Turismo Sport running on a PS5 dev kit, Wired’s Peter Rubin explains he could feel the difference of two different surfaces simultaneously. “Driving on the border between the track and the dirt, I could feel both surfaces,” he said. Haptic feedback should make for much more effective immersion.

Next up is adaptive triggers. The L2 and R2 buttons on a PS4 pad are fine, but what if you could feel the resistance of a taut string on a bow, or the clink of pulling the trigger on a gun? That’s what the DualSense PS5 controller will be able to provide. The triggers on the PS5 controller will “offer varying levels of resistance” to further cement you in the game’s world. This combined with the haptic feedback should achieve some pretty amazing results.

DualSense also replaces the PS4 controller’s Share button with the Create button. We don’t know too much about the difference here, but Sony says it will provide “new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world”.
