How Long Will Sony Support Ps4

Don't Miss

Which Is Better Ps4 Or Ps5

PS4 News – Sony To Add MP3 & DLNA Support To Playstation 4 Post Launch – Confirmed By Yoshida

The Sony PlayStation 5 is finally here and although it may not be the worlds fastest console, its a significant upgrade over the PlayStation 4. With a whole new architecture, superior resolution support, and faster storage thanks to the SSD, the PS5 console is better than the PS4 in almost every way.

‘you Will See A Tail With Ps4 That You Did Not See With Ps3’

Good news: Jim Ryan, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has a new promise for PlayStation 4 owners that should positively affect their last-generation consoles’ longevity. The top exec said Sony is committed to bringing great games to PS4 for years to come.

In an interview in the December issue of Edge Magazine, Ryan admitted that the transition from the PS3 to the PS4 was rather abrupt. He added that the company is taking a different approach as it shifts focus to the PlayStation 5.

“We do feel that we have a responsibility to that very large community, and an opportunity to carry on making great PS4 games for as long as the need is there,” the Sony boss explained. “I think you will see a tail with PS4 that you did not see with PS3. But that said, as time passes, you’re going to see more and more emphasis on PS5 development.”

In other words, Sony will phase out the PS4 much more slowly than it did the PlayStation 3. This pledge is great news for players who usually wait for a price drop or for those who can’t get a PS5, thanks to scalpers charging triple the price or more for a unit. It also means fresh new games well into the future for users who tend to hold on to their legacy systems.

What does this mean for PS5 owners? Will they see fewer games coming out on their shiny new consoles? Probably not.

Ps5 Vs Ps4 Pro Verdict

In all honestly, there’s little reason to buy a PS4 Pro right now unless your budget is very strict. Not only is the PS5 a more powerful, faster box, but Sony’s efforts to enable backwards compatibility means that even if you buy a PS5, you won’t miss out on the PS4’s finest experiences, and probably those older than that, too. Most also run better than ever before, with games like Ghost of Tsushima now able to run at 60fps on PlayStation 5.

If you’ve been waiting this long to buy your first PS4, youre probably better off going straight to the PS5 for future-proofing purposes as much as anything.

That said, upgrading from a Pro is another matter and a tougher dilemma. The Pro already supports 4K for many games at decent performance, and you’ll need deep pockets for an 4K TV with HDMI 2.1 support to fully benefit from the PS5’s power and higher frame rates. With that in mind, dont feel like you need to push your PS4 Pro to the side and get a PS5 right now. Theres still a lot your Pro can do for you and while stock for the PS5 is hard to come by its still a strong console to have.

Why Is Ps5 So Expensive

The PlayStation 5 is also a historically powerful gaming console. This means it requires demanding and powerful technology. The price of cutting-edge tech is always higher than the last generations models. Another reason these consoles are so expensive is how gaming habits have changed in the last year or so.

How will social features like Friends List and Party be improved with PS5?

PS5 expands the concept of Parties into a dedicated hangout space for you and up to 99 of your friends. You can share game content, plan play sessions, or just catch up over voice chat or text chat with users across PS4, PS5, and the new PlayStation app for mobile devices.

On PS5, the newly upgraded Parties are fast, convenient, and richly interactive places. Want to play a few multiplayer games? Jump straight into a match with your Party participants no further invites required.

Want to chat with a friend while showing off what youre playing? Start a voice chat in your Party and you can activate the Share Screen feature, which uses low-latency technology so you can show you friends what youre playing now in real time, while keeping an eye on their game progress, too.

Want to share your gaming experience? Using Share Play , you can also hand over control of your game to a trusted friend or use it to play a local co-op game together.

A new feature called Game Base acts as your social hub on PlayStation. Game Base collects all your Friends, Parties, chat conversations, and more in one convenient and persistent place across PS5, PS4, and the new PlayStation app for mobile devices, so you can stay connected with your friends on PlayStation wherever you are.

When Developers Will Stop Making Content For Last

While its hard to predict an exact number, its going to be at least a few years before PlayStation 4 games phase out completely, and the same likely goes for Xbox One. The production of the PlayStation 3 was only discontinued in 2017, as reported by Digital Spy – four years after the PlayStation 4 debuted in 2013. Even more telling, the latest game released for PlayStation 3 debuted this year: Shakedown: Hawaii released on August 20, 2020, when it also came to the Wii U, though it had debuted a year earlier on several different systems, including PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, and Windows.

If precedence is any indication, then PS4 games could continue to release a similar seven years after the launch of PlayStation 5. At the moment, there are already many games announced for a PS4 release as PS5 approaches, some of which may get ported to next-gen if theyre successful. Many games that are still in development for current-generation consoles are simply too far along in production or have too much of a financial commitment to make a next-gen release possible. At the same time, many titles have been confirmed for a cross-gen release, with remastered versions set to release on PlayStation 5 after their initial debut.

Buying A Ps4 Pro In : Is It Too Late

The original PlayStation 4 is already pushing 8 years after being first released in 2013, and with the release of the PlayStation 5 just right around the corner, its only fair to wonder, is buying a PS4 Pro in 2020 still worth it? Or, would interested gamers who dont own a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro yet be better off waiting the extra few months for the PlayStation 5?

Sony Is Shutting Down Playstation Communities For Ps4 In April

How to enable PS4 Pro 2160p RGB HDR support on Sony UHD TVs?

Another step towards Sonys commitment to the PS5

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will be shutting down support for the PlayStation Communities feature for the PS4 in April this year.

Sony shared the news via its official products and services page on its website. Beginning in April 2021, this feature will no longer be supported or available on your PS4 console, reads the announcement.

Sony has, however, confirmed that players will still be able to stay connected with one another and use its messaging services through the PS4 and PlayStation app. A fixed end date for the PlayStation Communities service has not been announced.

The PlayStation Communities feature allowed players on the PS4 console to create and join community groups based on their interests, and allowed them to interact with one another through messaging and other services.

The services end seems to be yet another step in Sonys progression towards full PS5 support in the future. Earlier this year, Sony announced that it will end support for the rental and purchase of movies and TV series via the PlayStation store by August 31.

Players who have purchased any form of media via the service in the past will still be able to access their purchases via their PS4, PS5 or mobile devices, but will not be able to purchase or rent anything new past August 31.

Industry Analyst Michael Pachter Believes Sony Is Unlikely To Commit Fully To Exclusive Ps5 Development Until Roughly 2023

Posted By Shubhankar Parijat | On 08th, Aug. 2021

Sonys lineup of first party exclusives is without a doubt one of the biggest reasons to get a PlayStation console, and that obviously isnt going to change any time soon. With the PS5, however, Sony has adopted a bit of a different approach early on in the consoles life, with a focus on cross-gen releases. While there certainly have been some big PS5 exclusive games already in the likes of Demons Souls, Returnal, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, it seems Sony wants to release its biggest tentpole releases on both PS5 and PS4, with upcoming games such as God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and Gran Turismo 7 being confirmed as cross-gen releases.

So what exactly can we expect Sony to fully commit to exclusive PS5 development? Industry analyst Michael Pachter fielded the question in a recently uploaded video, and he believes that simply given the fact that Sony is going to want to sell large quantities of its biggest games, its going to keep on releasing them for the PS4 as well until its confident that enough PS5 units have been sold for exclusive releases to be able to sell as much as they want them to. According to Pachter, we might start seeing some exclusive PS5 games by late 2022, but you shouldnt expect them to fully commit to the same until 2023.

How Much Longer Will Sony Support Ps4

While the transition may last three years, its likely that those three years will involve gradually winding PS4 development down, while focusing more on those exclusive PS5 titles. Truthfully, 2021 is likely the last full year where we will see the PS4 and PS4 Pro supported by Sony and third-party developers.

It Isnt All Doom And Gloom

Watching the PS4 fade into obscurity over the next two years is a little sad, but honestly, the PS4 and PS4 Pro will never truly die. You only need to look at consoles like the Sega Megadrive and PS Vita, to realise that there are still independent developers out there passionate about developing on those platforms.

The PS4 has arguably been one of Sonys most successful consoles, and while it may be on a downward slope, its still got a few years left in it yet. It doesnt have much choice at the moment, as the PS5 is still incredibly difficult to get hold of.

Sony’s official video comparing performance of PS4 Pro vs next-gen PlayStation

Takashi Mochizuki May 21, 2019

First off, were not just talking about buying a PlayStation 4 in 2020 here. Were talking about buying a PS4 Pro, the mid-cycle upgrade to the original PlayStation 4. It was released first in late 2016 and comes with a wide slew of improvements over the original 2013 release, including but not limited to, 4K support and smoother, higher frame rates.

Back in December, we talked about the merits of buying a PS4 Pro then, and it made a lot of sense.

It was the holiday season, and there were plenty of deals for the PlayStation 4 Pro and a 4K TV. Not to mention, we didnt know much about the PlayStation 5 yet. We knew that it was coming, but we didnt exactly know when, and what kind of improvements we should be expecting.

However, more and more details regarding the next-generation console are starting to emerge. Sony has been more open to talking about the PlayStation 5 the only thing which was missing was the spec sheet which we now have. This means that its time to get super excited! Were getting closer-than-ever to the PlayStation 5.

Why Its Worth Buying A Ps4 Pro In 2020

If youre in desperate need of an upgraded unit or if your current PS4 has died, then it wouldnt be the end of the world to take the plunge and splash out on a new PS4. Even if the PS5 releases in a few months, thats still a long time to wait without a console. This is especially true if youre already itching to play the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusives. Besides, its not like the PlayStation 4 or the PlayStation 4 Pro will be obsolete once the PlayStation 5 arrives and there will likely be some great trade-in deals once it does.

Another good point is that developers continued releasing games for the PlayStation 3 up until 2018, with dozens of games for the PS3 still being released from 2015 onward. If we assume that Sony and other developers will follow the same timeline, we should see games still being developed for the PlayStation 4 up until 2022-2023. It wouldnt even be unrealistic to expect marquee Sony exclusives to still be developed for the PlayStation 4 up until 2021.

This means that, even if you buy a PlayStation 4 Pro today, youll still have a full two years worth of video games being released.

Add the already-excellent catalog of games that the PlayStation 4 already has, six years into its lifespan, youll find that theres plenty of games to go around for the PlayStation 4 to keep you busy before you start getting bored and think of buying yourself a PlayStation 5.

Sony Expects The Ps4 To Hugely Profitable Even Two Years Into The Ps5’s Lifecycle

The PlayStation 4 absolutely dominated this generation and this year it’ll reach 100 million units sold worldwide. Although the next-gen PlayStation 5 is on the way, Sony isn’t about to flip a reset switch and scrap all that progress. No, the PS4 will live alongside the PlayStation 5 for years to come and is expected to deliver strong earnings well into the PS5’s lifecycle.

Sony has no plans to retire its massively lucrative PlayStation 4 any time soon. In a recent investor’s meeting, Sony predicts the PS4 will continue as the main driver for profitability and engagement until 2022, or roughly two years after the PS5’s planned launch. Although it’s not explicitly outlined, this infers the PS5 won’t pick up steam until its third year .

This makes perfect sense given the console’s massive 98.6 million install base and Sony’s emphasis on a seamless generational transition. Although the PS5’s Navi GPU and Zen 2 CPU hardware is a true leap ahead of current PS4 consoles, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will play all existing PS4 games via native backward compatibility. The company has put great effort in ensuring a smooth changeover between the two consoles.

PlayStation consoles are notorious for sticking around for a long time though. For instance, the PlayStation 3 lasted for 11 years , and the PlayStation 2 lasted for 12 years before being discontinued.

What About A Ps4 Slim The Younger Brother Of The Pro

If youre not sure about spending so much buying a PS4 Pro in 2019, you can consider buying a PS4 Slim instead, which costs half as much and is nearly just as good.

Weve spent all this time talking about buying a PS4 Pro in 2020 that we forgot about its cheaper and more svelte sibling, the PS4 Slim.

Released alongside the PS4 Pro in 2016, the PS4 Slim offered a cheaper and slimmer alternative to both the upgraded version of the PS4 and even the original PS4 console.

So, you may ask, whats the difference between the PS4 Pro and the PS4 Slim?

Essentially, its just the 4K support and the ability to record gameplay in 1080p . Sure, under the hood, the PS4 Pro is a lot more powerful, but we dont have time to go in-depth with the technicalities. All that you need to know is that, if you have a 4K TV, then, by all means, buying a PS4 Pro is a good idea. Otherwise, youll do just fine with a PS4 Slim.

The PS4 Slim can run all the games that the original PS4 and the PS4 Pro can run just fine. This includes exclusives such as Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Last of Us, God of War, and more.

Check out these bundles below which all include some of the exclusive games. PlayStation 4 Slim 1TB Console Only On PlayStation Bundle

Besides, the difference between 4K and 1080p on the PS4 is not always that significant.

Ultimately, regardless of whether youre gaming on a PS4 Pro or a PS4 Slim, youre still playing the same game and arguably getting the same type of enjoyment.
