What Can You Do To Prevent The Hdmi Port From Breaking Or Wearing Out

PS4 How to FIX the HDMI Port (No tools) NEW!

Even though the HDMI port on the Playstation 4 is fragile, there are some things you can do to reduce the risk of it breaking.

  • Turn the console off before inserting or unplugging the HDMI cable. This lowers the chance of damage to the HDMI controller chip.
  • Dont move the console around while it is turned on and plugged in. Moving the PS4 around while it is plugged in causes the HDMI connector in the port to move around and possibly cause a short circuit.
  • Dont wrap the cables around the console while they are still plugged in. This might be convenient if you need to move the Playstation 4 and the cables somewhere else, but it creates a lot of unnecessary stress on the HDMI port. Unplug the cables first, before wrapping them around the console.
  • Use a short HDMI extension cable or splitter if you need to frequently plug and unplug the HDMI cable. You can keep it connected to the PS4 all the time and connect to it instead of the PS4 HDMI port. This prevents the port on the console from wearing out.

Digital Cameras And Camcorders

As of 2012, most consumer camcorders, as well as many digital cameras, are equipped with a mini-HDMI connector .

As of 2014, some cameras also have 4K capability and 3D, even some cameras costing less than US$900. It needs at least a TV/monitor with HDMI 1.4a port.

Although cameras capable of HD video often include an HDMI interface for playback or even live preview, the image processor and the video processor of cameras usable for uncompressed video must be able to deliver the full image resolution at the specified frame rate in real time without any missing frames causing jitter. Therefore, usable uncompressed video out of HDMI is often called “clean HDMI”.

The Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 became the first HDMI sound card that implemented the Protected Audio Path and could both bitstream and decode lossless audio , although bitstreaming is only available if using the ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre software. It has an HDMI 1.3 input/output, and Asus says that it can work with most video cards on the market.

Legacy interfaces such as VGA, DVI and LVDS have not kept pace, and newer standards such as DisplayPort and HDMI clearly provide the best connectivity options moving forward. In our opinion, DisplayPort 1.2 is the future interface for PC monitors, along with HDMI 1.4a for TV connectivity.

How Do We Repair The Ps4

To repair this fault we need to carefully strip the console down to the motherboard. From there we desolder the old HDMI port. The port is attached by 4 main holding legs that are through-hole soldered and the HDMI data pins are surface mounted so it is a delicate job. Once the old port is removed, the solder pads of the logic board are inspected for damage. If the original port is really badly yanked, this can cause damage to the motherboard and in some circumstances could be beyond repair .Once we have cleaned up the board and prepped the solder pads for the new port, we solder the new HDMI port to the PS4. We reassemble the console and it goes down to our testing bench where all consoles are tested for at least 4 hours.

The first problem you will encounter if your PS4 HDMI port needs to be replaced, is that the PS4 will give you no picture on you TV or screen.

When you switch the PS4 on, the PS4 will stay on but then give you no picture and the power light will eventually just go to a white colour.

As mentioned before, look inside the HDMI port and see if it might be pushed into the console, or if you see any bent pins, as in the picture below.

If your HDMI port looks good and you dont see any damage, it could be the HDMI IC on the main board itself that is faulty and needs to be replaced.

What Causes The Ps4 Hdmi Port Fault

The most common reason we hear is that the PS4 has been dropped or knocked while plugged in. This causes the HDMI cable to yank out and physically damage the port. It can also happen while plugging in the cable. The ports are quite delicate so if the HDMI cable isn’t plugged in carefully to the PS4 it can cause damage.

If the port doesn’t look damaged, there is another part of the motherboard that could have failed.

Can I Send My Ps4 To Get Fixed

If your device is still under warranty then the best option would be to send it in to Sony for warranty repairs. There are several exceptions to this however. If you have already removed the warranty stickers then Sony will charge for any repairs and in some cases probably will not accept the console at all.

Historically, if you had a TV with external speakers, you had a receiver sitting on a shelf under your TV All inputs went to the receiver, and the the receiver would pass along the video signal to the TV. Now, as TVs have increasingly become the hub themselves, people plug everything into the bank of ports on the back of their TV and need a way to get the sound out to additional speakers like, say, a sound bar.

This is where HDMI comes in: if you connect two ARC-capable devices together the HDTV can pump audio out to the external device, no separate audio cable required.

How Many Hdmi Ports Will The Ps5 Have

As with the PS4 and most other consoles, the PlayStation 5 only has one HDMI port, located on the back aside the two USB ports, an ethernet port, and the power supply port.

This is unsurprising, given that youd only really want to plug your PS5 into one TV or monitor.

The main difference between the PS4 and PS5 HDMI is that the next-gen console supports HDMI 2.1 cables. If youre worried about needing to rush out and buy a new HDMI cable, fear not as the PS5 comes with its own bespoke HDMI 2.1 cable.

Hdmi Alternate Mode For Usb Type

The HDMI Alternate Mode for USB-C allows HDMI-enabled sources with a USB-C connector to directly connect to standard HDMI display devices, without requiring an adapter. The standard was released in September 2016, and supports all HDMI 1.4b features such as video resolutions up to Ultra HD 30 Hz and CEC. Previously, the similar DisplayPort Alternate Mode could be used to connect to HDMI displays from USB Type-C sources, but where in that case, active adapters were required to convert from DisplayPort to HDMI, HDMI Alternate Mode connects to the display natively.

The Alternate Mode reconfigures the four SuperSpeed differential pairs present in USB-C to carry the three HDMI TMDS channels and the clock signal. The two Sideband Use pins are used to carry the HDMI Ethernet and Audio Return Channel and the Hot Plug Detect functionality . As there are not enough reconfigurable pins remaining in USB-C to accommodate the DDC clock , DDC data , and CEC these three signals are bridged between the HDMI source and sink via the USB Power Delivery 2.0 protocol, and are carried over the USB-C Configuration Channel wire. This is possible because the cable is electronically marked that serves to tunnel the DDC and CEC from the source over the Configuration Channel to the node in the cable, these USB-PD messages are received and relayed to the HDMI sink as regenerated DDC , or CEC signals.

    Broken Hdmi Port On Ps4

When talking about faulty HDMI ports on the PS4, you first need to clearly pinpoint the problem. This hardware issue can manifest itself in different ways:

    • PS4 HDMI port bent pins This is one of the most common issues affecting PlayStation console owners. If you often plug your HDMI cable in and out, the risk of bending the pins increases, especially if youre in a hurry.
    • HDMI pins pushed in on PS4 This problem is closely related to the first one. It often occurs when you force the cable into the HDMI port.
    • PS4 HDMI port is loose If the port is loose, youll notice that your cable wobbles when you plug it in. More often than not, this happens because some HDMI pins are missing.

Bit/uhd/4k: An Enhanced Port For Enhanced Video

Newer TVs that support 4K, also called Ultra HD by some manufacturers, dont always have 4K capabilities on all the HDMI ports. Sometimes youll find only one port labeled to indicate thats the one you should use for your shiny new 4K-capable streaming device. How these ports are labeled is up to the manufacturer and youll see labels like 10bit, UHD, or 4K . Ultra High Definition video is still pretty new territory and manufacturers are scrambling to both cash in and distinguish themselves from each other, so be sure to check the manual for your TV to ensure youve got the right port and the right settings to get the most out of your UHD content.

So Do We All Get These Benefits

All of these extra features are potentially hugely beneficial for prospective Xbox Series X and PS5 owners. But there are a few caveats.

To get any of them you need to have both one of the new consoles and an HDMI 2.1 TV. Not all TVs will support all of HDMI 2.1s features either. Thats fairly obvious given almost all HDMI 2.1 sets will be 4K for some time to come.

We also do not know quite how many of the features will be supported by the Xbox Series X and PS5. Itd be silly for them not to get on board with Variable Refresh Rate if you ask us, but lets not organise a date for the HDMI 2.1 celebration party just yet. HDMI 2.1s feature list is a menu, not a list of mandatory standards to meet.

Youll also need a new Ultra Speed cable to get the full 8K friendly bit-rate experience, but take a look at the price of 8K TVs right now before worrying about that. 8K: well see you in 2025.

Don’t Miss: Does Ps4 Have Backwards Compatibility

Playstation 5 And Xbox Series X

You can connect the PS5 and Xbox Series X to any TV you could connect a PS4 and Xbox One X to. You don’t need a new TV. You probably don’t need new cables either. Definitely not if you have a 1080p TV. If you have a 4K TV and want to play these new consoles in 4K, your current cables will probably work. You’ll know pretty quickly: If you connect the console and the TV says it’s a 4K signal, you’re good to go.

There are, however, exceptions that relate to HDMI 2.1. Both new consoles are capable of 4K up to 120 frames per second. Some new TVs can handle this higher frame rate. Almost no older TVs can, even those called “120Hz.” The TV will need HDMI 2.1 to let the console run in all this high frame-rate glory. Your current HDMI cables probably won’t be able to handle 4K120. You’ll need Ultra High Speed HDMI cables, which thankfully, aren’t that much more than “regular” HDMI cables at this point.

One final important reminder: if you have a receiver or soundbar in your system, and the game console is connected to that, it too has to be HDMI 2.1 in order to pass 4K120. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, so to speak. So if your console is 2.1, your TV is 2.1, but your receiver is 2.0, you’ll only get resolutions and features possible with HDMI 2.0.
