Secrets Of Playstation Classic: Sonys Hidden Menu Support For More Games

How to Mod Your PlayStation Classic! | Add More Games with BleemSync

Sonys PlayStation Classic has not been reviewed particularly well. As we detailed in our roundup, the collective opinion of the community boils down to bare-bones implementation with a so-so library. Theres been plenty of speculation about why the system ended up shipping with such a weak selection of games, with the imminent release of various remakes and the difficulty of lining up appropriate music licensing for games that relied on then-current music but failed to secure the rights to said music for more than a few years. Theres also been criticism of the fact that many games are copied from the European PAL versions, which run at 50fps, as opposed to the 60fps PAL standard.

As hackers have spent more time with the machine, however, theyve already found one genuine secret and data pointing to the possibility that a great many more games are compatible with the PS Classic than it actually ships with.

The new menu exposes a variety of capabilities, including RAM-based save states, the option to use CRT scanlines, and a frameskip setting . Theres a host of options, some of which will require testing, and, in theory, could damage your PlayStation Classic. As always, be very careful before you go mucking about with hidden menus.

Modding The Playstation Classic

  • Useful Links
  • When my brother alerted me the Playstation Classic was on sale for $20 I picked one up. I didnt expect much from the stock presentation, and didnt get much, but after wrangling with the Orange Pi for emulation I appreciated the value of a single-board computer already packed in a tidy box with controllers.

This project is often represented as plug-and-play, but for some users thats not the case. There are several hardware issues that can make emulation non-trivial. The chief issues are the USBs and the power supply. Rather infamously, Sony declined to include a power adapter with the device. Note a powered USB hub will make this project much easier.

I have decided to preserve the entirety of my hacking journey as it happened, but be advised this process was complicated for me because I am an idiot who apparently does not know how to extract a .zip to root. EXTRACT TO ROOT.

    How To Change Regions

PlayStation Classic mod yields frame rate improvements ...

Region locking has been the bane of video games and DVDs since time began and that issue is brought into the modern world with these new retro consoles. Once you’ve completed the new game hack you may want to “import” some of your games from Japan or Europe. For that, you’ll need to be able to change the region your PlayStation Classic is locked to.

Region locking also reduced the potential frames per second your game could reach. 50Hz games, or those labeled PAL, were limited to 50FPS unlike 60Hz, or NTSC games, which were limited to 60FPS. With the hack below you will be able to make all games run at 60FPS, and maybe save your eyes too.

    Retroarch And Emulation Station

Besides support for more PS1 games, Project Eris comes with two killer pieces of software: RetroArch and Emulation Station. RetroArch is an open-source platform for emulation, using cores to emulate different game consoles. The PlayStation Classic isnât powerful enough to emulate a Switch, but it can emulate Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast games â to a certain extent and results will vary per title.

Emulation Station is a graphical user interface that runs on top of RetroArch. Itâs basically RetroArch with a nice coat of paint and streamlined UI/UX. Those familiar with the RetroPie software for Raspberry Pi computers will recognize Emulation Station as the main interface. Generally, I prefer using Emulation Station because it looks nicer and there are tons of great themes available to download.

    Super Mario 64

Match of the Millennium looked fine, but the gameâs frame rate would jump around quite a bit from 50 fps to 20 fps. I typically got around 30 fps, which is not good for a fighting game , but the Dreamcast game did technically work. I had fun playing a few matches solo, but the novelty wore off quickly due to the choppy frame rate. Less-than-perfect emulation is pretty common when it comes to emulation performance varies by game so you will see different results that may run better or worse.

Playstation Classic Now Supports Wireless Dualshock Controllers Thanks To 8bitdo

Sony’s PlayStation Classic retro console certainly takes its inspiration from Nintendo’s miniaturized machines right down to the ‘nostalgia factor’ of bundling the box with old-school wired gamepads. Wired gamepads, might we add, that have cables so short you’ll be sat right next to your TV a recipe for the square eyes our parents warned us about.

Accessory makers 8-BitDo have come to the rescue however it’s opening up pre-orders for a USB adaptor that lets you use all manner of wireless pads, lag free, with the mini console.

That opens up the newer DualShock 4 and DualShock 3 pads for use with the console. But that’s not all the dongle can be used with the Nintendo Switch, Windows, Mac and Raspberry Pi machines, and can also support the Nintendo Switch Pro, Switch Joy-Cons, Wii Mote, Wii U Pro and a number of other lesser-known wireless USB pads, giving all the mentioned computers and consoles use all manner of other pads.

Hello and welcome to another tutorial for hacking Classic consoles. Weve previously covered how to mod NES and SNES Classic consoles and everyone truly had a blast modding those. Weve even made a post about this Bleemsync in the past. However, this BleemSync 1.0 is improved in pretty much every way over the old 0.4.x. A few notes, these releases are still considered beta, but 1.0 is the most stable and usable thus far. Additionally, this will only cover using a Windows PC. But all OS types are supported as well as all mainline browsers except Internet Explorer. Last note, if youre on a previous version of BleemSync, just let it go and start from scratch. This new method is pretty different and changes files structures. Ok, lets do this!

Other Accessories For Your Playstation Classic

    Xbox One Controller

The Xbox One Controller is the perfect game controller. Its weight, balance, and ergonomics are the best in class. You can also play a far larger array of retro games with this, rather than the stock PlayStation Classic Controller. You will need a Micro-USB cable to use it though.

Linked with the Micro-USB this HDMI will allow you to move the PlayStation Classic anywhere you want it. It’s especially helpful if you want to use the original controllers.

    Anker Dual AC Adapter

A wall adapter is required to use the PlayStation Classic since it doesn’t come with one in the box. This Anker one is an excellent adapter and comes with two ports so you can charge your phone at the same time.

What You Need To Mod Your Classic

PlayStation Classic Modded with 500GB Internal SSD ...

Apart from your Windows PC, there are only two things you need to mod your PlayStation Classic. You will need a USB flash drive and the PlayStation Classic itself. Everything you need to do is done on those three things.

The PlayStation Classic is a bit of a contradiction. Some of its parts are great the controllers being standard USB ports is an excellent choice, and making the disk tray button open the virtual disks is a beautiful touch but the game library leaves a lot to be desired. Happily, Sony also left a lot of backdoors to allow the modding community to help us load any games we want onto it.

16GB of speedy memory. The Sandisk Ultra Flair 16GB flash drive is an excellent product for storing information and transferring it quickly over its USB 3.0 connection.

I’ve used the Sandisk Ultra Flair for many different projects and it never fails to do a good job. This drive is perfect for the PlayStation Classic mod as it can be formatted to FAT32 and, because of the USB 3.0, everything can be transferred quickly and easily.

    The Fix: Project Eris

As always, the fix for bad products has come from the hacker community. Hackers cracked the console within a week of the mini consoleâs release. Project Eris, an all-in-one software solution, created and maintained by the Mod My Classic team, is now considered the best hack and unlocks the true power of the PlayStation Classic.

I followed the steps to install Project Eris on my PlayStation Classic using Mod My Classicâs instructions here the whole project took an hour, though that might be longer if youâre less experienced with tinkering. The project requires two inexpensive components that are easy to find online.

This isnât a tutorial so I wonât go over every step, but I do want to share some of my findings. For example, you need a USB to transfer the initial data file, but not all flash drives are equal because some donât have enough power throughput. After scouring Reddit, I found this SanDisk Cruzer Glide 2.0 USB Flash Drive works fine. I also got an OTG cable, which connects to the back of the console. An OTG cable frees up the frontside USB ports and can power a faster flash drive. I stuck with the cheap Cruzer Glide 2.0, which has not given me issues. Though not necessary, I recommend getting 8bitdoâs PlayStation Classic wireless adapter to connect wireless controllers like the PS4âS DualShock 4 gamepad. The adapter pairs almost instantly and adds joystick functionality with no additional setup.

How To Add New Games To The Playstation Classic

Step 1. Navigate to the bleemsyncui.com and you should see the BleemsyncUI interface.

Step 2. On the game manager screen, click the Choose files button under the Add New Game option to open your file manager.

Step 3. Select the .bin and .cue files for the game that you want to add and click Open. If there are multi-disc games, select all the files for each disc and click Open.

    Tip:

Step 4. After you have selected the files, click Add Game.

Step 5. When you have installed all the games you want on the PS Classic, turn off its console.

Step 6. Remove the USB cable from your Windows PC and the console.

Right now, all steps are told to you. It is your turn to try operating the PS Classic hack and install new games on it. In addition to the above questions, PS Classic players also raise some other common problems. For example, how to access the hidden menu? How to change the regions?

Playstation Classic Hack: How To Access The Debug Menu

How to Mod PlayStation Classic with Project Eris (BleemSync)!

To gain access to the PlayStation Classic debug menu youll need to get your hands on a compatible USB keyboard. Unfortunately, not all keyboards will work and it seems like a trial-and-error approach is the only way to find out. So far, the only confirmed keyboards that work are the Corsair K70 and K95.

However, once you do have a compatible keyboard, tap the ESC key while your PlayStation Classic is loading a game and youll open up a debug menu to tweak all manner of settings.

As you can see from the Retro Gaming Arts YouTube video below, the settings are relatively simple and straightforward. You can emulate CRT scanlines if you want a retro feel to your games, and theres the option to switch the PAL 50Hz games over to 60Hz, which will notably boost the performance of titles like Tekken 3 and Ridge Racer 4.
