The Sony PS5 is not just an awe-inspiring slab of shock and awe technology. There’s also something delightfully old school about it. It’s got buckets of next-gen performance on tap, but its proportions and design are truly something to behold. To kick off this PS5 review, I first have to warn you that you probably won’t be able to buy Sony’s next-gen console straight away. Even though it’s now a year since its launch, the PlayStation 5 is still hard to get your hands on. Take a look at T3’s PS5 restocks page to give yourself the best chance of picking one up.
Here you can find out what makes it such a popular piece of kit. I’ll cover everything you need to know about arguably the most sought after console in the world.
Over time, I’ll get to know the PlayStation 5 more and more so I’ll be sure to update this review with fresh takes and new discoveries.
Will The Playstation 5 Have Vr
VR as a gaming platform has come a long way since it hit the mainstream and still has tremendous possibilities moving forward. Sony has invested pretty heavily in PSVR, particularly when it comes to amazing first-party games, so it would make sense for them to continue supporting it as a platform.
What that looks like in terms of the PS5 is hard to say, but it could involve some pretty exciting new hand tracking technology. Sony published a patent on October 11, 2018, that details a new VR headset which is capable of tracking the location of fingers, making controllers redundant in that setting.
Its called Gaming Device With Rotatably Placed Cameras and describes a wearable device which is worn on the hands.
The method includes capturing images of a first hand using a plurality of cameras that are part of a wearable device. The wearable device is attached to a wrist of a second hand and the plurality of cameras of the wearable device is disposed around the wearable device. The method includes repeating capturing of additional images of the first hand, the images and the additional images captured to produce a stream of captured image data during a session of presenting the virtual environment in a head mounted display . The method includes sending the stream of captured image data to a computing device that is interfaced with the HMD. The computing device is configured to process the captured image data to identify changes in positions of the fingers of the first hand.
Everything We Know About Ps5s Dualsense Controller
The PS5âs new controller will drop the DualShock moniker of the four previous PlayStation controllers and be renamed the DualSense. The controller was designed to give gamers haptic feedback and comes with adaptive triggers so players get a better sense of touch and feel when playing a game.
Hereâs a few more standout features:
- Its form and color scheme was completely redesigned. Itâs much more rounded and its primary color is white, with hints of blue and black. The lightbar is now located on the sides of the central touchpad.
- It will come with a USB-C port for much quicker charging compared to the DualShock 4.
- The Share button was replaced with the Create button. Sony hasnât explained how this new feature will work just yet.
- The controller comes with built-in microphones. So say goodbye to the PS4âs clip-on earbud.

Confirmed And Potential Ps5 Launch Games
A strong list of PS5 exclusives and launch titles will be crucial to Sonyâs success in the next-gen console war. Though there are a number of games that have been announced for release in 2021 and beyond â like God of War: Ragnarok, Final Fantasy XVI, Horizon: Forbidden West, and more â there are also other games expected during the “launch window,” like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
But what of the actual launch titles for day one? Outside of PS4 games that players already own, ongoing live service games like Fortnite, and a curated list of PS4 classics free to all PS Plus subscribers via PS Plus Collection, the actual launch lineup is an impressive, tight list:
- Demon’s Souls
- Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition

Does Ps5 Come With Any Free Games
Yes, all PS5 systems come with one free game pre-loaded: Astro’s Playroom. While a standalone game in its own right, Astro’s Playroom also serves as a demonstration of what the DualSense controller is capable of. Astro’s Playroom can be removed from the system’s internal SSD to free up space and can be re-downloaded for free.

Ps5 Price Analysis And Release Date
- PS5 release date: Out now
- PS5 price: $499.99 / £449.99 / AU$749.95
- PS5 Digital Edition price: $399.99 / £359.99 / AU$599.95
The PS5 was released in North America, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand on November 12, 2020, which was just two days after the release of Microsofts next-gen consoles, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. For the rest of the world, the console became available one week later on November 19.
In terms of the PS5s price, it costs $499.99 / £449.99 / AU$749.95 for the standard version of the console with a 4K Blu-ray disc drive. However, if thats more than you want to spend, theres also the PS5 Digital Edition, which is exactly the same apart from the fact it removes the disc drive entirely. It costs $399.99 / £359.99 / AU$599.95, which is a saving of $100 / £90 / AU$150 over the standard model.
The PS5 is more expensive than the launch price of the PS4 and PS4 Pro, which both came in at $399.99, but they arrived seven and four years ago respectively now, and you’re getting a generational leap in hardware here for $100 more. The PS5 is still expensive, don’t get us wrong, but the jump in price does feel warranted for what youre getting.
- Huge for a modern gaming console
- Space-age aesthetic is polarizing
- But the size means more space for air ventilation and a bigger fan
IO throughput: 5.5GB/s , typical 8-9GB/s Expandable storage: NVMe SSD slotExternal storage: USB HDD support Optical drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray drive

Ps5 Review: Heat And Noise
Thanks to its massive internal fan and large vents along the inside of the chassis, the PS5 stayed cool and mostly quiet during my time with it. I rarely noticed any noise coming out of the console, even as I spent hours exploring Astros Playroom or webbing up crooks in Spider-Man. I did notice some rare moments of audible noise when running Star Wars Battlefront II, and could hear discs spinning pretty loudly when I first put Blu-rays in the machine. But compared to the jet-engine-like noises that come out of my PS4 when simply downloading a game, the PS5 is blissfully quiet.

Ps5 Review: Features And Controller
The PS5’s DualSense controller looks and feels fantastic in the hand, and has excellent rumble capabilities.
The DualSense controller is, I am happy to report, a mighty fine gamepad. It also easily beats the PS4’s pad, with a slightly rounder, filled out chassis falling into the hands much easier. It feels like a hybrid between the PS4’s controller and the Xbox One Wireless Controller, and that is no bad thing.
The rear of the body is finished with the same micro cross, circle, square, triangle pattern that appear on the inside console wings, which looks class and also provides that slightly rough texture that the best pads have to stop things getting slippery when the in-game heat is on.
The DualSense has a USB Type-C connection for charging and wired connections.
One of the biggest takeaway features I noticed with the DualSense, too, was its in-depth and complex haptic feedback .
This is far from just a one-note rumble and depending on what you are doing, in-game feedback to your hands provides varying degrees of sensation. It’s one of those features that is so well implemented that it just blends seamlessly into each gaming session, enhancing the experience.
The game just loaded and ran perfectly on PS5
I would confidently say that this haptic feedback tech is streets ahead of the Xbox Wireless Controller’s and Sony should be commended for it.
Ghost of Tsushima is a masterpiece. Play it now.
Xbox trumps PS5 with its three generations of backwards compatibility
Playstation 5 Price Vs Xbox Series X Price
So, how does the PS5 compare to the Xbox Series X on price? Better than many expected, as it happens.
The Xbox Series X and the full-fat PS5 are identically priced, at £449 .
Both consoles also have a disc drive-less, cheaper sibling: that’s the Xbox Series S and the PS5 Digital Edition. This is where things get really interesting, because the Xbox Series S costs only £250 , whereas the PS5 Digital Edition is £360 .
That’s a big step up, but it’s worth pointing out that the Xbox Series S is less powerful than the Series X but the PS5 Digital Edition is identical to the standard PS5 except for the lack of a disc drive. In other words, the PS5 Digital Edition is more of a proper next-gen games console than the Xbox Series S.

Ps Vr2 Specs And Features
Now onto the juicy stuff the PS VR2’s specs! Sony unveiled the hardware details at CES 2022, but we’ve yet to see the headset itself.
In a nutshell, the PS VR2 is going to look, feel, and perform better than the PS VR.
The 4K OLED panels offer a resolution of 2000×2040 per eye and framerates of 90/120Hz.
There’s a 110-degree field-of-view, and thanks to the eye-tracking, simply looking in a direction will act as an extra input for the device, as well as adding to the immersion.
There’s headset-based controller tracking too, thanks to the integrated PS VR2 cameras.
The headset can track both you and the PS VR2 Sense controllers and translate your movements movements and the direction you’re looking into the game, without the need for external cameras.
Another way Sony is improving the VR experience is with the PS5’s Tempest 3D Audio, which is combined with the eye tracking, headset feedback, and PS VR2 Sense controller for “an incredibly deep feeling of immersion.”
A motor built-in to the headset vibrates to provide “an intelligent tactile element” in a similar way to the DualSense.
As an example, Sony says that you’ll be able to “feel a characters elevated pulse during tense moments”, or in-game objects rushing past your head.
Even the thrust of a vehicle as you accelerate will feel more real thanks to the headset feedback.
The PS VR2 will come with a single cable so you can just plug-and-play, with no complicated set-up process.
Ps5 Pro Price And Release Date
The biggest factor around a potential PS5 Pro for many people will be what price tag Sony attaches to it – since the £450 or $499 PS5 is still so hard to come by, if the PS5 Pro eventually appears at a higher price it might be hard to justify spending more on it.
Taking the PS4’s generation of consoles as our example, the PS4 Pro has consistently sat at around £100 or $100 more than the base PS4, even as those prices have been steadily cut, to maintain the angle that it is the higher-powered and more premium option.
However, by the time it launched, the original PS4 had a lower price, so we’d assume Sony might follow the same track and release the PS5 Pro at the exact same price as the PS5, while making the base model cheaper.
When exactly this might happen is a long shot, but we can’t see it hitting shelves before late 2023, frankly. Given the huge shortage of materials that it’s working with, Sony still can’t make enough PS5s to meet demand. Whether it will want to muddy the waters with a new model so quickly is anyone’s guess.

What Games Will Be On The Ps5
We dont know a lot about the titles that will be released on the next-gen console yet, but we can have a fair guess based on what game developers have already announced. Here are some titles that have already been announced, but are still early in their development cycles, or have a reason for a re-release.
- GTA VI
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Fallout 76
- Beyond Good & Evil 2
Ps5 Specs & Rumored Pricing
According to Mark Cerny, the PlayStation 5 is not just an upgraded version of the PS4 Pro. The PS5 will be an entirely refreshed, brand-new hardware build. The console will feature an octo-core CPU and a custom GPU, based on AMD’s Ryzen and Radeon Navi hardware, respectively. Those upgrades will give game developers lots of new superpowers when coming up with software for the PS5. That means console gamers will finally see visuals relying on “ray-tracing” called the “next level” in gaming graphics and 8K resolution, too. Cerny is also very excited about 3D audio: “With the next console the dream is to show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply significant amounts of hardware horsepower to it.”
All of the computing power of the PS5 sounds great, but technology can get expensive quickly. And nothing can kill console sales faster than the sticker shock of an overpriced system, something Sony found out the hard way with their rocky launch of the PlayStation 3 back in 2006. Learning from that mistake, Sony undercut Microsoft in 2013 when they announced the PS4 would start at $100 less than the Xbox One. Nothing concrete has been revealed from Sony about the PS5’s pricing, but Ace Research Institute’s Sony analyst Hideki Yasuda revealed in May 2019 that he expects the console to launch at $499.
