For nearly three decades, no console manufacturer had ever truly dominated two console cycles back-to-back. Whether because of inevitable complacency, the markets inherent demand for originality or some sort of corporate curse, whenever a console manufacturer had dominated the market it always seemed to decline the second time around.
Super Nintendo had come close to replicating the huge success of NES, but ultimately lost market share and sold less consoles in every territory compared to its predecessor.
In 1995, before even the original PlayStation had set the gaming market ablaze, PlayStation Europe president Chris Deering was already determined to beat the second-console curse.
From day one on PS1, I started thinking about what I would do to make sure PS2 could win round two, Deering told Eurogamer in a 2010 interview. Nintendo and SEGA had never won two in a row. We used to say it was like winning two gold medals in two back-to-back Olympics it just never happened. So I set that as a personal goal.
Jack Tretton, who was heading up PlayStations US business, shared a similar sentiment with GI.biz: Going into PlayStation 2, we were certainly confident, but we were also cautious because it was very rare that the leader of one generation could hold that position in the next. Shin Koihime Musou: Otome Ryouran
Shin Koihime Musou: Otome Ryouran was a Japanese video game exclusive to Sony consoles, though it was also released for PC in2008. It was later revised for the PS2 and came out on November 10, 2011 and was developed and published by Yeti.
The game didn’t gain much attention and sales due to it being only released in Japan – though the niche nature of this colorful romp, based on an adult visual novel, likely would have had limited appeal anyway.
The game tells the story of a character who one day wakes up and suddenly finds himself in a different universe. The adventure told is an alternative version of a classic Chinese historical novel called Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

The launch software was also displayed, with WipeOut and Namco’s Tekken and Ridge Racer drawing the most praise. Sony also announced the unit would not be bundled with Ridge Racer, as was previously assumed.
Overall, Sony made a very formidable showing at E3. They had already proven themselves in Japan and were close on Sega’s heels. Over the course of the next year they would overtake Sega and conquer Japan as their own. Now they were poised to do the same in America.

Drummania March 4th 2000
An arcade title ported to PS2 to be part of the launch lineup, DrumMania is a rhythm game that requires players to coordinate their button presses with the corresponding symbols on the screen. Basically an early drum version of Guitar Hero.

The Computer Entertainment System
When the NES released in 1985 the term video game had a bad connotation after the market flood of poor quality games that lead to the industry crash, so Nintendo decided to refer to it as an entertainment system and design it as a home entertainment component, instead of touting it as a video-game system. Sony took a page from the same book and referred to the PlayStation as a computer entertainment system instead of a console.
The PlayStation could not only play the systems official game also music CDs and later video CDs, which were the predecessors to DVDs. This made it not only the most powerful but also the most versatile system of its time.
Even after Sony released the PlayStation 2 in 2000, the company continued to support the original PlayStation, encouraging developers to continue publishing and developing for the system for six years into the PS2s lifespan.
In 2006 Sony ceased manufacturing the original PlayStation, giving the system a 12-year lifetime and ending it as the first console to sell 100 million units.

It was the console that defined an era but now Sony’s PlayStation 2 has finally reached game over. The company has confirmed to the Guardian that after 12 years and 150m units sold worldwide, making it the most successful home games machine of all time, all PS2 production has ended worldwide.
Launched in 2000, the successor to the original PlayStation ended up with a library of more than 10,000 games titles by 2011, with 1.52bn individual games sold since launch. “At the height of the PlayStation 2’s success, the word effectively came to mean video games for a lot of people,” said Anna Marsh, a game designer who worked on Tomb Raider and Hitman.
Its success was down to three factors: cunning design, excellent games and great timing. Sony’s decision to include a DVD player meant the machine found its way into living rooms, exposing many more to gaming. It trounced its underpowered rivals, the Nintendo GameCube and Sega Dreamcast, and became the exclusive home of must-have games such as Grand Theft Auto III, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid dominating an era in which developers were changing the rules of game design, crafting ambitious cinematic experiences and vast open-world adventures.
“The industry has become so fractured, I’m not sure we’ll see another console that gets that sort of penetration into the public consciousness,” said Marsh.
