The Headset Design: Vibrations Eye Tracking Moving Lenses
Even if Sony’s PSVR 2 headset looks bulky in the photos, it could end up being a lot more comfortable than the Quest 2. An adjustable headband, similar to the PSVR’s original design, means it’ll tighten around the head like a visor instead of using an elastic strap to squeeze your face. Sony promises adjustable lens distance for different eyes and faces, too, like the original PSVR had. That type of fit worked really well for my glasses.
The headset supports headphones with a standard headphone jack, and has one cable that tethers to the PS5 via USB-C, via a jack that seems to come out of one side of the headband. That’s a lot fewer wires than the crazy breakout box needed for the original PSVR.
Built-in eye tracking promises to deliver better graphics, and possibly allow eye control and eye contact in VR games. Eye tracking isn’t common in consumer VR headsets yet, but the technology should be arriving on other mainstream headsets, including Meta’s next VR device and possibly Apple’s as well.
The headset’s four tracking cameras will allow movement in VR to be tracked without using a TV-connected camera bar. The tracking should work in a similar way to other VR headsets. It’s possible that the cameras could allow some pass-through mixed reality, too, blending VR with what the cameras see onto the headset’s display.

Sony was the first of the console manufacturers to really give virtual reality a shot when it made the first PlayStation VR unit for the PlayStation 4. While impressive for the price, there were a lot of drawbacks: Players didnt like having to use controllers from the PS3 generation, the camera tracking wasnt great, and the resolution left much to be desired. Despite all of that, PS VR ended up being one of the bestselling headsets on the market.
Seeming to take all the lessons learned from the PS VR, as well as looking at what advancements other headsets have made, Sony unveiled the new PlayStation VR2. Initially just a blog post, Sony has slowly been trickling out more and more information on the upcoming addition to the PS5. Some of the major questions we have are still up in the air, but there is plenty of information floating around to get excited about. Heres everything we know about the PlayStation VR2 so far.
The Oculus Quest 2 May Be A Better Purchase
Though it doesnt boast the power of the PS4, Facebooks Oculus Quest 2 headset easily trumps PSVR in terms of accessibility, immersion and even pricing. True, you wont be playing No Mans Sky on Quest 2 anytime soon , but what games you can play on Quest you can play without wires and a full 360 degrees of tracking. For games like Red Matter and Superhot VR, it offers a much more compelling end-result. Plus the base 64GB model is $299, which is $50 cheaper than PSVR and you dont need a console.
Plus Quest 2 is just at the start of its life, with at least a few more years of exciting releases ahead of it. And if you ever want to upgrade, you can instead buy a PC and play exclusive Oculus Rift titles like Lone Echo and Asgards Wrath. If you buy an Oculus Quest, you know youll be set for a little while. The Ps5 Should Eventually Be A Vr Powerhouse
The PS5 seems ideally suited for VR, with spatial 3D audio and support for Unreal Engine 5, which will clearly be used for next-gen VR and AR. Unreal Engine 5 doesn’t arrive until late next year, though. And Sony’s plans for a new VR headset remain a mystery.
For now, if you’re interested in VR, it doesn’t seem like a good time to buy a PSVR unless you’re ready to live with a lot of limitations. If you’re using a PS4, maybe. But for PS5 owners, VR compatibility may be a lot less exciting than you were maybe expecting. Sony’s VR game library is impressive, but the PS5 isn’t ready yet to take VR to the next level.

Should I Wait For The Psvr 2 Or Buy The Original
The main thing to ask is how much you want to buy a virtual reality headset for consoles now. According to the latest rumors from expert analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Ross Young, the PSVR 2 has been slated or delayed to Q1 2023. Whether this is due to a chip storage or a PS5 console shortage, its up to you whether you can wait until then.
The original PSVR still works well and is compatible with the PS5 as long as you have the free camera adaptor that connects your PS4 PlayStation Camera to the PS5. However, its important to point out that there are technically no PS5 games that are compatible with the PSVR. You will still need to play the backwards-compatible PS4 games on the PS5 if you want to use the headset on the system. So if youre looking for lasting value, its better to wait for the PSVR 2.
Because the headset is still the only one available for consoles at the moment, the price for the PSVR hasnt dropped too much from the $399 price tag when it launched in October 2016, but today you can find special PSVR bundles at a strong overall discount. This includes the PSVR Marvels Iron Man VR Bundle that, at the time of this writing, is being sold on the official PlayStation Store for $349. If the rumors of a Q1 2023 release are true, then you may find tech deals closer to the winter holiday season. Its unclear what the PSVR 2s price will be, but based on its predecessors launch price, we expect it to cost somewhere between $399-$499.

What Are The New Psvr 2 Controllers
The one aspect of the PSVR 2 that we are confident of is the new controllers. Sony has focused a lot of their release information on this new controller design . The unique orb shape allows for a far more natural grip than the old Move controllers, aiding immersion. The shape also moves the trigger under the controller, which feels more natural to hold. The layout is most interesting because the four action buttons are divided over the two handsets, making it likely that the controllers will need to be used as a pair.
As expected, the new controllers will include many features also integrated into the PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers. With adaptive triggers with varying resistances and haptic feedback that uses targeted rumbling, these new controllers may be the most immersive in VR gaming to date.
They also integrate better tracking than their predecessors. The next-generation VR headset will now have the ability to track these controllers, and the controllers themselves will track where your fingers are positioned on them. This will allow all new methods of control in PlayStation VR and should be able to interpret your movements far more accurately than the current system, which solely relies on tracking from the camera and has a tendency to desync.

With only a couple of weeks left until the official launch of PlayStation VR, it’s time for Sony to start ramping up the hype. It’s starting off with an unboxing of the core bundle package.
In a video posted to the official PlayStation blog, Sid Shuman is showing fans exactly what they’re going to get when they purchase a PlayStation VR headset bundle.
As far as hardware is concerned, the video shows that the bundle will include the virtual reality headset , the external processing unit, all of the necessary power and USB cables, and a pair of headphones. As well as this, the bundle comes with the PlayStation VR demo disc with 18 playable games to give you a sense of just what your headset can do.

Psvr 2 Will Run On Ps5 Via A Single Wire
This ones a bit of a no-brainer but, just in case you didnt know PSVR 2 will run on PS5. Sonys next-generation console is now rolling out across the globe and, although supply has been an issue, its slowly but surely finding its way into peoples homes.
In February 2021s blog post, Ryan confirmed that the new headset connects to the console via a single cord, meaning a much simpler setup than the mess of wires included in the original PSVR. Theres no confirmation of any possible wireless connectivity just yet, but well come to that in a bit. Either way, the added processing power of the PS5 should go a long way to improving the PSVR experience. Again, more on that further down.

Eye Tracking Comes From Tobii
Earlier in 2022 Tobii confirmed it was in negotiations with Sony to be the eye tracking supplier for PSVR 2. In July, the company confirmed a deal had gone through and that the companys eye tracking tech will be integrated into the headset. Currently you can find the companys solution in other headsets like the HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition and the Vive Pro Eye.

Psvr 2 Headset Design
As discussed above, Sony has recently shown off the design of the PSVR 2 which reveals a sleeker and more modern-looking headset than its predecessor:
Sony has also noted this new headset features a slightly reduced weight in contrast to the last generation, alongside confirming the feature of adjustable lenses and an intriguing new vent design, and a mechanism to stop the lenses from steaming up.
Recent reports have also suggested that the PSVR 2 cable is able to be detached and replaced. If this is correct players will be able to replace faulty wires without the need for a new headset.
We don’t have an exact figure on the weight of the device just yet, but as and when we get it, we’ll be sure to let you know.

How Much Does It Cost
Sony still hasn’t put a price on the PSVR 2, which suggests it won’t be cheap. The original PlayStation VR cost $400 for just the headset back in 2016. With the PSVR 2’s eye tracking, higher-end display and fancy controllers, this could end up costing at least as much as the PlayStation 5. But that’s all speculation.

Sony is stepping it up in a big way for a new generation with PS VR2.
From brand new controller designs to higher-fidelity visuals, there’s a lot to get excited about with PS5 VR. PlayStation VR on the PS4 has been a success story in some very real ways, and Sony plans to continue that trend on the PS5. With over 5 million units sold and a steady library of games, Sony proved that VR gaming could be successful as an add-on to an already successful console. Sony has confirmed that the PS VR2 will be a PS5-exclusive release and reports indicate that it could be debuting in 2022 with some exciting new technologies in tow.
If you’ve ever played or owned an original PSVR, you’ll know that, while it’s a great overall experience, there are certainly some improvements that can be made. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan says Sony is focused on making PS5 VR “the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity.” Officially, the new PS5 VR experience is called the PlayStation VR2, or PS VR2 for short. Sony will be shipping the headset with a higher resolution, wider FoV, DualSense-inspired controllers called PlayStation VR2 Sense, and a single-cable connector.
