The new information comes via an exclusive interview between Wired and Mark Cerny published earlier today, during which the consoles chief architect revealed a veritable cornucopia of interesting tidbits about Sonys next generation console.
Will Ps5 Games Work On Ps4
No, unfortunately not. PS5 games are optimized specifically for the updated internal hardware of the PS5. So they wont be compatible with the PS4s internal hardware.
PS5 games will work seamlessly with the increased SSD speed, ray tracing, and 4K resolution that comes along with the PS5. All of that technological goodness means that the PS5 games will look great on the PS5 console, but just cant function with the hardware components of the PS4.

It appears that Sony not only has established the new and dominating look of the PS5 but also engulfed a stable PS4 conversion. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, the PS5 does not give up on older video games. In a recent interview with CNET, Sonys CEO Jim Ryan confirms the liability between the Playstation 4 and the PlayStation 5. Instead, it will encourage playability and throughout backwards compatibility, even for discs.

Even before the official PS5 reveal event, Sony has confirmed that the next-gen PS5 will fully support backwards compatibility. An estimation of 4,000 games is supposed to be available through backwards compatibility at launch.

PS4 owners of the world rejoice, you’ll still be able to play the games that you have now on the PlayStation 5 once it finally arrives. It’s going to support backwards compatibility!
That will mean that you shouldn’t chuck out your PS4 games when you eventually come to grab the new console, which is out in time for Christmas 2020.
This is because – without getting too technical – the new machine is based on pretty much the same stuff as the PS4.
Mark Cerny, one of the video gaming boffins responsible for bringing us into this new generation of consoles, recently spoke to Wired and confirmed not only that the machine would be called the PS5 officially, but also that it will support PS4 games.
He said: “”Because is based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console.”
As for those of us who still hang onto outdated things like actual physical games, don’t worry about that, either.
The machine, once it arrives, will also support physical discs rather than being completely digital.
Obviously, you’ll be able to download stuff straight to the machine, but if you’re the kind of old-fashioned gamer who actually likes to have something to hold in their hand, fear not.
If you’re wondering about whether or not you’ll be able to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games on this forthcoming machine, you’ll have to keep wondering.

- The PS5 HD Camera accessory cannot be used with PS4 PSVR games. You need to use the PS Camera accessory that comes with PSVR
- DualShock 4 controllers cannot be used to play PS5 games
- The PS5 DualSense controller can be used to play select PS4 games

If youre wondering whether PS3/PS2 games will have backwards compatibility with the PS5, the answer is sort of. Physical disc versions of PS2 and PS3 games are not backwards compatible with the PS5, though that could change with future news from Sony Interactive.

As to how the PS5 is able to support backwards compatibility, Cerny explained that its all down to the consoles internal architecture. Specifically, that its based on the PS4s. Its as simple as that.
And while backwards compatibility isnt the be-all and end-all especially when you consider the number of remasters weve seen this generation its certainly a feather in Sonys cap. Not just because it provides players with an even bigger library of games to enjoy when the PS5 finally arrives , but because a considerable number of forthcoming titles will be released on both PS4 and PS5 in the consoles early days.
In other words, players who decide not to invest in a PS5 straight away can rest safe in the knowledge that theyll still be able to enjoy their PS4 games on the new console further down the line. Happy days!

More importantly, Nishino revealed for the first time that your collection of PS4 games will automatically transfer to your PS5.
“When you sign in to PS5 with your account, you will automatically see your library of played PS4 content through the menu, said Nishino. …were excited about supporting our PlayStation community as they transition from PS4 to PS5 when theyre ready.”
There was some worry among gamers that the PS5 wouldn’t be backwards compatible with even PS4 games. Remember, when the PS4 launched, it couldn’t play PS3 games until PlayStation Now, Sony’s cloud subscription service. We now know the PS5 will support almost all PS4 games but not PS3, PS2 or PS1 games .
