Is Ps5 Adding Ps3 Ps2 And Ps1 Backward Compatibility New Sony Patent Has Playstation Fans Speculating
Wait, Is Sony getting ready to surprise PlayStation players by expanding PS5 backward compatibility support to include PS3, PS2, and PS1 games? Well, a new Sony patent has ignited this exact speculation. On March 18, a new patent from Sony was published titled “Method and Apparatus for Awarding Trophies.” On the surface level, this patent isn’t very interesting, but it’s about awarding trophies for emulated games, and the only games Sony would be emulating in 2021 would be legacy games, like those on PS3, PS2, and PS1.
Of course, the patent makes no mention of the PS5, backward compatibility support, the aforementioned legacy consoles, or anything too juicy, but it does mention emulation quite a bit. Beyond this, it’s brimming with technical jargon.
“A computer-implemented method assigns one or more trophies to a user. A game is emulated in response to a request from a client device,” reads an abstract of the patent. “A trophy trigger is detected during emulation of the game by comparing a memory value of the emulated game to a predetermined value and assigning the one or more trophies to the user based on the detected trophy trigger.”
More or less, this all the patent divulges of consequence, and for now, there’s no way to know if the speculation above is off-base or not. What we do know is that companies like Sony file patents all of the time, many of which never graduate from concept to product.

Then I read somewhere that installing it to the internal SSD would help, so I tried that and lo and behold, it did. Not the same as some of these issues, but it was still annoying. Also not remembering if I had that reversed, but it was something like that.

Going to the main topic of this article, you can find out all the information you need regarding whether or not you can play PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation 5 by reading below.
Can you play PS2 games on PS5?
The short answer is Yes. It is possible to play older PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation 5. Likewise, players who are looking to revisit older titles on the PlayStation 2 console can do so on the PlayStation 5. However, it is important to note that it is currently not possible to play the physical disc copies of PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation 5. Therefore, players can play the older titles using two methods.
The first is by using the PlayStation 5s backward compatibility support for games that are available on the PlayStation 4. Some popular titles that were originally on the PlayStation 2 that is now available on the PlayStation 4 are playable on the PS5. Some popular titles from the PlayStation 2 that are playable on the PlayStation 5 include Grand Theft Auto Vice City, Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, etc.

The Issues Between Ps3 And Ps5
One of the key aspects in making a console backwards compatible is whether the architecture of the new console is similar enough to the console in question. This is one of the reasons that so many PS4 games are playable on the PS5.
The older PS3 is substantially different to the PS5 in this regard, making it much more difficult to make those games playable on the new console. Of course, this isnt to say Sony could not have made it so PS3 games were playable on the PS5, it just focused its efforts elsewhere.
So are any PS3 games playable on PS5?
Ps5 Backwards Compatibility: Can You Play Ps2 Games
Some PS2 games that were ported to the PS4 will be playable on PS5. This includes essentials such as Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. However, you’ll need to have purchased the PS4 versions via PlayStation Store to be able to play them on PS5. The PS5 cannot play PS2 DVDs, and any PS2 Classics you may have purchased on the PS3 will not be compatible either.

Without Full Backwards Compatibility Playstation Is Lagging Behind Xbox
The new PS Plus Premium library will include some PlayStation 3 games. However, this pales in comparison to what the Xbox One and Series X are providing at the moment. In addition to the original Xbox and 360 games available through Game Pass, a significant number of those titles can be played on the newer consoles if the owner has the physical disk. The same cannot be said for the PS2 and PS3 for those who own a PlayStation 5. Although most PlayStation 4 games can be played on the PS5, the fact that so many classic games for the PlayStation 3 and 2 are unplayable on the new system is a shame. Sony’s focus on generations has hurt the PS5, as players still have to own a PS2 or PS3 to play their previous-gen games, or pay again for a remaster or a new PS Premium subscription to stream something they already bought years ago.
Backwards compatibility is something that is always lauded as a function for a new console. The ability to keep playing older games on the next console generation has immense value, especially given that older hardware can sometimes be prone to faults or errors. It’s clear that backwards compatibility would be a bigger draw for the PlayStation 5 than PS Plus Premium, but at least at the moment, it doesn’t seem like Sony will be following that route.
How About Ps Ps2 And Ps3 Games
If youre wondering whether PS3/PS2 games will have backwards compatibility with the PS5, the answer is sort of. Physical disc versions of PS2 and PS3 games are not backwards compatible with the PS5, though that could change with future news from Sony Interactive.
However, PlayStation Now, or PS Now, works with the PS5. PlayStation Now is a cloud-based streaming service by PlayStation that allows you to pick and choose which games you want to play across multiple generations of PlayStation consoles. Think of it as Netflix, just with PlayStation games.
Some games stay on PS Now for what seems like forever, and some games expire after only a year of being on there. And youll have your pick of a ton of PS2, PS3, and PS4 games on the service.

Not only does the PS5 backwards compatible with PS4 games, but it may improve them. Some PS4 games will with higher and smoother frame rates when played on the PlayStation 5.

New Ps5 Patent Suggests A Backward Compatibility Fix Is On The Way
A new PS5 patent that hints towards backward compatibility has been filed by lead system architect Mark Cerny.
Originally spotted by on Twitter, the new patent named ‘Backward Compatibility Through Use Of Spoof Clock And Fine Grain Frequency Control’ has been filed on USPTO. Considering the PS5 is already able to support PS4 games, this patent could be intended to allow players to access the likes of PS1, PS2, or PS3 games on the current-gen console.
New @cerny patent sure@sounds like hes nailed BC for older #PlayStation consoles pic.twitter.com/7n8zyzjcic
The patent overview itself details how this fix works. To spare you the technical talk in its entirety, it essentially explains how “an application designed for the current version of a system” runs at that system’s standard clock frequency, so PS5 games run at the PS5’s frequencies, while PS3 games run at the PS3’s clock frequencies. Sony intends introduce a “spoof clock,” which would “return a number that corresponds to the frequency of the less powerful console,” tricking the PS5 into accepting older games.
Theres no way of knowing exactly how long this patent will take to reach players or if it will even get used at all. So, unfortunately, for now, PlayStation fans will have to stick to owning all five generations of the console to play their favorite games.

Can A Ps5 Play Ps3 Games
The answer is yes and no. The PS5 will not work with PS3 physical discs since the console does not recognize those. However, some titles are available as part of PS Now.
PS Now is a subscription service that lets you get games digitally. The service is compatible with the PS5, so you can run any available PS3 games that the service includes. Make sure the games you want arent expired, as some titles dont last forever on your subscription.
Even if some of these games are available on PS Now, inserting their PS3 discs will not work. It must be a digital copy of the PS3 game that you receive through the PS Now or PS Plus Premium services.
Titles available in this format include:
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
- The Last of Us
- Batman: Arkham City
- Uncharted 2
As PS Now is updated frequently, the list of games will expand. Heres a link to the latest complete database.
Incredibly, PS Plus Premium even has PS1 and PS2 titles, stretching all the way to the old classics some lifelong gamers grew up playing. While you can download these, theres no option to do so for PS3 when some PSP games can be played this way.
The only true way a PS5 can play PS3 games is by cloud streaming, similar to Google Stadia. Theres no official explanation for why PS3 games have been singled out, but its likely due to costs and the difficulty of emulating PS3 architecture.
We also dont have the complete list of PS Plus Premium games as of now.
