Playstation Vue Review

Yes. Most PlayStation Vue on-demand content has a few commercial breaks, so you can expect to spend a few minutes watching commercials before each episode and during each movie you watch.

In addition, some on-demand content from select networks do not have any fast-forward or rewind options, which is a bit disappointing. The availability of fast-forward and rewind options depends both on the content, and the channel which is providing it.

Playstation Vue: Where Is It Available

In March 2016, Sony announced that its PlayStation Vue internet TV service had gone nationwide in the states.

The Netflix-like service launched over a year ago and has been available in select US cities, bringing live, local broadcasts from CBS, ABC, FOX, and NBC to New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, and Miami. But there is a caveat to the service now expanding across the US: it’s cut live network programming in the 203 added markets.

Playstation Vue Faq: Everything To Know About Sonys Cable Tv Alternative

For about a year, Sonys PlayStation Vue streaming service was barely worth paying attention to. At launch, the cable-TV alternative only worked on PlayStation game consoles, and although Sony expanded availability late last year, Vue was still only available in a handful of U.S. markets. It didnt help that Vue lacked channels from the Disney media empire, including ESPN.

Everything changed in March, when PlayStation Vue launched nationwide and added ESPN and other Disney-owned channels to its lineup. You can read our full PlayStation Vue review for a verdict on how well the service works, along with our comparison to rival Sling TV. Playstation Vue Review: Live Tv That’s Not Just For Gamers

Vue has a slick interface and plenty of features yet suffers from a comparatively weak channel selection.

Editor’s Note, Feb 4 2020: Sony shut down the PlayStation Vue service on January 30, 2020, but for a list of the best alternative live TV streaming services go here.

Sony’s PlayStation Vue has a name problem. It’s a live TV streaming service that doesn’t include “TV” in the name at all. Worse, the name could imply that it only works on Sony’s PlayStation game consoles. So let’s get this out of the way up front: You don’t need a PlayStation to use the PlayStation Vue. It works on numerous smart TVs, media streamers and phones, just like competitors YouTube TV, DirecTV Now and Hulu with Live TV.

When PlayStation Vue debuted in 2016 it was the first premium live TV streaming service, with more channels than Sling TV — the only other such service at the time. Sony’s offering still has a lot going for it today, with a powerful, easy-to-use interface and one of the best cloud DVRs available,

Unfortunately Vue’s latest price increase to $50 pits it directly against two very talented competitors at the same price: YouTube TV and DirecTV Now. DirecTV Now has the advantage of including HBO, and nearly matching Vue’s channel count, while YouTube TV is my favorite overall at this price, with a superior channel mix and a better DVR than any of them.

Ultimately it’s all about channels for the money, and as nice as Vue is to use, it can’t bring enough channels to compete at $50.

What Kind Of Content Can I Expect From The Playstation Vue On

PlayStation Vue Review

Like most other internet TV services, PlayStation Vue doesnt own any of the on-demand content that it provides. Each individual channel is responsible for supplying episodes of their shows, or syndicated movies.

But since PlayStation Vue has such a wide variety of channels, you can get a pretty good selection of content. A few top shows that can be streamed on-demand include Rick And Morty, Vanderpump Rules, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and The Walking Dead.

As far as movies go, the channels available on PlayStation Vue have a good selection. At the time of writing, top films like Avengers: Age of Ultron, X-Men: First Class, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them were available from networks like SYFY, FX, and TNT.

However, this lineup is subject to change. Most networks have expiration dates for their most recent episodes and for syndicated films. Check the details of each piece of on-demand content, and you can see when it expires.

Sony is showing off its PlayStation Vue cloud-based TV service. Its aimed at competing with cable TV, largely by providing both your favorite entertainment channels as well as local TV programming.

Vue is a cloud TV service available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 game consoles an iPad version is in the works as well and Sony hopes itll find a following with the 40 million PlayStation fans in the U.S. who also watch a lot of TV. Its available as a free download, and it gives you up to 85 channels. It rolls out first in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

I saw a demo of the PlayStation Vue service at Sony Network Entertainment in San Francisco. So far, so good. As it is, gamers will like it. They can get broadcasts from local TV stations as well as regional sports networks. But it could use some improvements, such as voice commands and a separate remote control. The service is not available on the PlayStation Vita handheld.

Players can login via their email and password from any machine. Its $50 a month for the basic package. You get more channels with $60 and $70 a month options. Back in November, Sony said that it was going to launch with six network partners: NBC, CBS, Fox, Viacom, Discovery, and Scripps. Now it is also adding Turner and AMC network content.

What Exactly Is Playstation Vue

PlayStation Vue is an online video service from Sony that replaces cable or satellite TV. In exchange for a monthly subscription, you get a big bundle of live TV channels, such as ESPN and CNN, along with DVR-like features and on-demand programming, all available on a variety of Internet-connected devices.

Playstation Vue Is Cloud

New service will let you watch live TV and on-demand content without a cable or satellite subscription.

PlayStation maker Sony has announced an all new, cloud-based TV service called PlayStation Vue. The platform, which lets you access live TV and on-demand content without a cable or satellite subscription, is coming to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. A beta will begin later this month.

Sony isn’t holding back in boasting about Vue, saying the service “reinvents” the traditional TV experience. The announcement came with a statement from Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House, who laid out his vision for Vue.

“Everyday TV is about to become extraordinary with our new cloud-based TV service, PlayStationVue,” House said. “Today’s announcement builds on the historic success of PlayStation 4 and demonstrates what our company is capable of when we embrace disruption and stay true to gamers.”

Vue has a “powerful” user interface, Sony says, which delivers “unprecedented personalization and simplicity.” The service also features recommendation algorithms, which will clue you in on movies and shows based on your previous viewing habits and trending content. You can also use Vue’s “Explore” function to view the entire catalog of on-demand content, filtered by program, genre, ratings, and popularity, among other things.

Vue’s current network partners, with descriptions courtesy of Sony, are listed below–more will be announced later.

Pricing for PlayStation Vue depends on the availability of live local broadcasts, which in turn depends on where you live. In markets that include live feeds from most or all major networksthat is, ABC, CBS, NBC, and Foxservice starts at $40 per month. Everywhere else, Sony offers Slim packages starting at $30 per month, with ABC, NBC, and Fox offering on-demand video.

In both cases, the base Access package includes about 55 TV channels. An extra $5 per month gets you the Core package, which adds regional sports and a few other channels, while an extra $15 per month gets you the Elite bundle, which adds even more regional sports and special-interest channels. You can also pay $35 above the base price for an Ultra plan, which includes everything in the Elite bundle plus HBO and Showtime. Additional premium channels are available as add-ons or standalone subscriptions.

What’s It Like To Use

Perhaps thanks to its gaming origins, the Vue interface is one of the most visually stimulating, with bright menus and large thumbnails. The service is more lively and likable than its biggest competitor YouTube, in my opinion.

The channel guide is slightly different depending on which platform you use. It’s arranged vertically with channels across the top on the PlayStation’s interface, but in a more traditional horizontal fashion on Roku. I really liked how the guide condenses into days once you finish the current 24 hours. This allows you to skip to a specific day without having to wade through hours of programs. Smart.

The Home screen is essentially composed of One row and one column — the first column is divided up into timeline, recently watched, and currently watching. The next column along is Trending Live TV, then My DVR, then Favorite channels, Sports and finally Featured.

The interface can have its quirks, which you’ll need to learn, and this is especially true on the Apple TV. For example, you need to press play to exit a menu and watch a show rather than the usual menu button. Pressing menu continually instead just dumps you out of the program without even a warning prompt.

Picture quality was generally good, though, of course it was dependent on the channel. I did notice that Discovery was very soft-looking on Fast ‘N Loud, and the Food Network was a little softer than YouTube TV. Your mileage may vary.

Playstation Vue Lost Viacom Channels: 3 Other Ways To Stream Those Shows

Jason Aldean Performs âThatâs What Tequila Doesâ? | CMT Campfire Sessions

Earlier this week, Sony made a relatively quiet announcement: all of its Viacom channels would be disappearing from PlayStation Vue starting November 11. Subscribers still saw the channels in their guide when that date rolled around, but the show info was blank and you couldn’t select them. Starting Saturday, subscribers were greeted with an on-screen message informing them about the channel removals, and many people are less than happy. Fortunately, there are some alternatives for streaming those now-missing shows.

Viacom channels include Comedy Central, Spike, CMT, VH1, MTV, Nickelodeon and related kids channels, and more. This means Saturday morning cartoons on Nick, South Park on Wednesday nights, and more are no longer available to PS Vue subscribers.

Sony still isn’t giving subscribers any specific reason for this change, instead saying, “we have determined that removing the bundle of channels from Viacom is the best way for us to continue to offer the most compelling value to our fans.” That leaves everyone in the dark about whether these channels will ever return or if they’re gone for good.

Fortunately, and depending on which other video subscriptions you have, you may still be able to stream the shows you lost access to…but if not, you have some options.

Playstation Vue Channels: The Best Option

Unless youre a sports fan, especially one looking to add the Sports Pack and get NFL RedZone, your best option is actually the cheapest: The $44.99-per-month Access package. It gives you all of the essential channels you need without any of the unnecessary filter. And at that price point, its more competitive with other live TV streaming options like Sling TV, Hulu with Live TV, FuboTV, DirecTV Now, and YouTube TV. If you cant live without premium channels like HBO and Showtime, youll save a lot of money by adding those individually, either through PlayStation Vue or as standalone apps, the same way you would subscribe to Starz, ESPN+, or other services not included in PlayStation Vues packages.
