The PS4 Pro is undoubtedly a substantial step up from the PS4, but ‘true’ 4K gaming is difficult for it to achieve without compromise.
The biggest physical difference between it and the standard PS4 visually is the addition of an extra layer, but the internals were beefed up considerably. The GPU is a great deal faster, and although the CPU is architecturally similar, it’s been clocked at a faster speed.
So, should you make the upgrade from your existing PS4? The answer largely depends on if you have a 4K TV or plan on upgrading to one. If you are, then the PS4 Pro will present numerous visual benefits. If you aren’t, well, there’s likely isn’t anything on the PS4 Pro that will be worth the extra money, at least not yet.
With the PS5 now having launched, of course, you may wish to save your cash for this true next-generation leap in power and capability. Otherwise, though, you should be able to nab some excellent prices on the PS4 and the PS4 Pro even if they’re looking a bit long in the tooth by comparison.

Why Sony Launched The Ps4 Pro With Outdated Hardware
So why did Sony launch the PS4 Pro fully knowing the hardware is mismatched? It’s rather simple: they wanted to get ahead of Microsoft’s new Project Scorpio, even if it meant alienating the core 40 million PS4 owners who now see their consoles as obsolete.
Project Scorpio will almost certainly utilize AMD’s new powerful Zen CPU and enthusiast-grade Vega GPU architectures that aren’t actually ready yet, so Sony had to improvise and use what’s currently available, packing in a new 4.2 TFLOPs Polaris-grade GPU and an outdated–but overclocked–Jaguar CPU in the system.
AMD’s next-generation Zen CPU is specifically designed to complement its new 14nm FinFET architecture, mainly Polaris and the enthusiast-grade Vega GPUs, so packing it alongside an older Jaguar microprocessor won’t afford the best results. But also remember that AMD has carefully scaled and customized both the CPU and GPU to maximize optimization–but that can only go so far.
In fact, AMD is already testing out its new Raven Ridge APUs that feature Zen CPUs and Vega GPUs, which could pave the way for next-generation SoCs that power future consoles.
Sony affirms that the reasoning behind the CPU is to ensure smooth backward compatibility with existing PS4 games, but it’s not a coincidence: even if they wanted to boost the CPU, they’d have to wait until 2017 until Zen is ready.
Ps4 Vs Ps4 Pro: Key Differences
One of the main differences when it comes to the PS4 vs PS4 Pro question is resolution: the original PS4 is limited to 1080p but the newer PS4 Pro can go as high as 2160p or 4K, as it’s more commonly known. However, games need to have been specifically updated to take advantage of the PS4 Pro you can see a comprehensive list of older games here.
Ultimately, it’s up to game developers themselves to make the most of the more powerful PS4 Pro hardware. If there’s no PS4 Pro mode in the game, then you can’t get true 4K resolutions.
The good news is that since the Pro launched, all new PS4 games have to include a ‘Pro Mode’, enabling them to make the most of the Pro’s enhanced hardware. It’s also worth considering that even if an older game hasn’t had a PS4 Pro patch, it’s still probably going to run better on the more expensive console, which also applies to PS5.
Don’t forget that in order to see 4K HDR graphics in all their glory on your PlayStation 4 Pro, you’ll need a 4K HDR TV to match an older 1080p screen won’t see much of a benefit, apart from supersampling a generally more stable frame rate.
Should you buy a PS4 Pro and have a 4K TV on hand, however, prepare yourself for a feast for the eyes games look great on the PS4 Pro. These Chips Ain’t Cheap
AMD. APU. Six letters which would normally spell out the word “cheap.” But in the case of the PS4, we can be pretty sure of the opposite. In fact, from the data Sony has revealed, the PS4’s APU actually sounds like a serious investment — not only in terms of R& D for the semi-custom design, but also in terms of raw components.
It’s true that AMD is known for undercutting Intel in the marketplace, usually with the sacrifice of some general computing power. And among AMD’s offerings, the APUs — which combine CPU and GPU on a single piece of silicon — generally hit the lowest price points, maxing out at a retail price of around $130. Merging processors is a tried-and-tested way of reducing costs — that’s why Microsoft did it with the Xbox 360 Slim in 2010.
But here’s the thing: AMD’s current top-end APU only delivers around 700 GFLOPs of compute power from its CPU and GPU combined. We’re told the PS4’s processor delivers nearly 2 TFLOPs from its GPU alone. In other words, we’re looking at 3X compute performance before we even get to the eight-core CPU.
To get a similar level of graphical power to the PS4, you’d need to spend at least $200.
Can Games Use 8 Cores
Generally speaking, six cores is usually considered optimal for gaming in 2021. Four cores can still cut it but would hardly be a future-proof solution. Eight or more cores might provide performance improvement, but all this depends mainly on how a particular game is coded and what GPU the CPU would be paired with it.

What Is The Nvidia Equivalent Of Ps4 Pros Graphic Card
Its GPU is somewhere between AMD RX 470 and RX 480, as it is known to me. It has essentially the same features that an RX 480 but with an equidistantly lower speed.
Its RX 470 is on par with the R9 290, but with some extra improvements, and the 290 is comparable to the GTX 780 of NVIDIA. Therefore, you can consider it to be between NVIDIA GTX 780 as well as GTX 970. Be aware it is the case that this GPU has particular optimizations which will be available within AMDs Vega line. Its, therefore, quite difficult to come up with an exact comparison.
The best-selling cards of NVidia The 10 series, in particular, will take down console hardware. Its not even close to level 1080 Ti level.

In the almost seven years between the PS4 release and the PS5 release, there have been some considerable technological improvements in the world of gaming. Maybe We’re Not Meant To Turn It Off
Each update to the PS3 brought its power consumption down significantly, mainly by shrinking the processor’s transistors down from 90nm to 65nm and then 45nm. The original 90nm processor burned up to 200W merely while perusing menus and we’d never have left it on overnight for fear of attracting mice to the warmth of the TV cabinet.
The latest version consumes just 60W on the menu or up to 80W while running a game, but the PS4 could take things even lower while still pulling of sophisticated functions — such as acting as a game hub for a connected PS Vita, or running always-on facial recognition with the new sensor-laden Eye module.
The 28nm Jaguar cores in the PS4 are an evolution of AMD’s Bobcat silicon, which was used in netbook processors that generally maxed out at 18W. According to slides recently released by AMD, a quad-core Jaguar chip will consume up to 25W. Even if the PS4 doubles that, with eight cores burning 50W, that’d still be a lot quieter and easier to cool than a recent PS3.

The PlayStation 4 features an 8 core x86-based CPU and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. The latter has been unanimously praised by developers ever since the PlayStation 4 was revealed back in February this year. This 8GB is split into 16 DRAM modules of 512MB RAM each, 8 surrounding the CPU and the remaining 8 below it. AMDs Jaguar CPU architecture is used to build the central processing unit , which consists of two x86-64 quad-core modules with eight cores. Each core has 32 kB L1 instruction and data caches, and each four-core module has a shared 2 MB L2 cache. According to the CPUs base clock speed, it is said to clock at 1GHz. 6 GHz.
It’ll Change The Way Games Are Made
AMD has staked its future on a certain philosophy that has sometimes left it looking isolated. Unlike Intel, which throws its billions into putting ever-greater numbers of transistors into its cores, AMD reckons that there are smarter ways to use and arrange these transistors.
Having many weak cores instead of a few strong ones is a classic example. All of this will be good for AMD, since games will run better on its hardware. But in the long-term it could be a good thing for anyone looking to play games on a low-cost, low-power device.

The revealed PS4 Pro specs are as follows:
- Main processor: Custom-chip single Processor
- CPU: x86-64 AMD “Jaguar,” 8 cores
- GPU: 4.2 TFLOPS, AMD Radeon based graphics engine
While we dont have the super deep dive details on all the technical specifications of Sonys upcoming console, we do know that the PS4 will use an 8-core AMD CPU, so our equivalent build also uses an 8-core AMD CPU. Specifically, our PS4 Pro rig uses an FX-8350 processor.
To clarify, the PS4 Pro will use a system-on-a-chip that integrates the CPU and graphics processing unit together on the same die. While AMD makes accelerated processing units that combine the two on one chip, these consumer APUs are designed more for laptops and workstations–they arent really meant for high-end gaming setups, which Sonys pitching the PS4 Pro as. Thus, it makes more sense to go with two separate, more powerful components for our build.
For its GPU, the PS4 Pro is using AMD graphics based on the companys Polaris architecture. With that in mind, we went with the Radeon RX 480 as our graphics card. This is AMDs flagship Polaris GPU and features 5.8 teraflops of graphical performance.

The PS4 and PS4 Pro are last-generation consoles now, but you still might be interested in building a similar PC or outperforms these consoles. To do that, you need to know about the parts that you need to pick. So first, I will go over the CPU and GPU inside the PS4 and PS4 Pro, along with their PC equivalents.
The PS4 has a custom AMD CPU with eight cores, based on the Jaguar architecture that runs at 1.6 GHz. Console hardware is custom-built for a single purpose, that is, gaming. On the other hand, PCs are multi-functional, and the CPU and GPU combinations are almost limitless. Developers optimize their games for consoles, which is rarely valid for PC unless a version is made for PC from the ground up as Bungie did for Destiny 2.
