Ps5 Will Only Be Backwards Compatible With Ps4 Games

Exploring PS5 – Backwards Compatibility

The PS5 won’t be able to play any PS1, PS2, or PS3 titles, despite being backwards compatible with 99 percent of the PS4’s game library.

Despite PlayStation 5 being backwards compatible with a large portion of the PS4’s library, its ability to play older games won’t reach back to the PS3 or beyond. The PlayStation line of consoles has more than two decades of hits in its collective library, but in recent times, Sony has opted for remastering and remaking classic titles rather than porting or allowing backwards compatibility.

Yesterday, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan stated that the PS5 will be backwards compatible with 99% of the PlayStation 4’s library. This put many Sony fans at ease, knowing they will be able to play games like Bloodborne and The Last of Us Part II on their next-gen consoles. The PS Plus Collection was also announced, which allows PS5 owners to access many of the PS4’s greatest titles for $10 USD a month. However, these PS4 titles are the only older games Sony’s next-gen console will be able to play.

Ps5 Backwards Compatible With Ps4 Games Patent Surfaces

In a new patent registered by Sony a while back, and updated on October 2, 2018, it looks like that well get backwards compatibility with PS4 games. It also appears that could extend to PS3, PS2 and PSOne games. Check out the wording from the patent, which is titled Remastering by emulation.

Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it. The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers. The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.

The last sentence seems to suggest that the numerous remasters of PS3 games that weve seen on PS4 wont be happening on PS5.

PS5 backwards compatibility is looking a little more likely after a US patent was updated by Sony Interactive Entertainment America. Updated on February 13, it clearly states: Backward compatibility testing of software in a mode that disrupts timing.

What Does The Ps5s Design Look Like

Sonys most controversial choice with the PS5 may be the shell of the console itself. Both the default PS5 and the Digital Edition have the same basic exterior design. Theres more white than black in the systems two-tone color scheme, which already makes it stand out in a typical entertainment center. And then theres the actual case, a striking design with two curved wings that wrap around a central slab. Standing vertically, it looks like a fancy cable modem lying horizontally, it could be a … futuristic performing arts center.

The front panel on both models offers one USB-A 2.0 port, one USB-C port, and a power button on the standard PS5, theres also an eject button above the power button. The PS5s rear port array features two USB-A 3.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a power input.

As for the size, well, the PS5 is an absolute unit. It may be the largest video game console ever made, and its certainly the biggest PlayStation of all time. In its vertical orientation, the PS5 stands 15.35 inches tall 3.5 inches higher than the Xbox Series X and is 10.24 inches deep. The standard model is 4.09 inches wide, while the Digital Edition is a little under half an inch slimmer without the disc drive, coming in at 3.62 inches wide.

Do Ps1 Ps2 And Ps3 Games Work On The Ps5

While it is great that PS4 games will play on the PS5, there are still three generations worth of consoles prior to that which have a plethora of games on them, many of which are regarded as outright classics. For now, at least, most of those PS1, PS2 and PS3 games will not be playable on the next-gen machine.

Rumours abound that a solution to this issue is on the way, and while Sony has not said anything concrete, we would be surprised if this was not announced in the foreseeable future. There are rumblings for a retro gaming subscription service on PS5, which would certainly be welcomed by us.

As a quick aside, though, the PS2 Classics games that already came to the PS4 should all work on your PS5 so thats something! Just dont expect all your old favourites to be there, and definitely dont try putting a PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc in your PS5.

As with the Xbox Series X and S, backward compatibility is performed through emulation, which means some features and/or games may not work or may exhibit some bugs. However, on the flip side, you can also use the PS5’s Game Boost feature on some PS4 titles to play them in a higher or smoother frame rate.

PS4 games can be played using the DualSense controller that comes with the PS5, or a DualShock 4 controller . However, it’s worth noting that the DualShock cannot be used to play PS5 games.
