The Sony PlayStation 5 release date was November 12, 2020, in the US and a few other select markets. It arrived just a week later in several other major markets such as the UK.
The PS5 price is set at $499 for the regular edition or $399 for the Digital Edition. While the former is the same as the Xbox Series X, the all-digital Series S is actually cheaper than the PS5 Digital by $100. The PS5 Digital is more powerful than the Xbox Series S, but it is worth noting that the barrier of entry for next-gen gaming is cheaper if you opt for Microsofts ecosystem.

PS5 pre-orders launched September 17, though there were very limited quantities out of the gate. The new console sold out everywhere shortly after launch, with new stock coming in very irregularly. And while Ive only played a handful of titles that are designed to harness the PS5s power, Im already impressed by what Sonys console is able to pump out in terms of fidelity, framerate and, most importantly, load speeds.
This shouldnt come as a shock, but games look fantastic running on Sonys new console. Spider-Man: Miles Morales looked more akin to a high-end PC game than a PlayStation title, as I gawked at the gorgeous reds and purples of Spider-Man and his enemies popping off the screen in 4K. Thanks to the consoles ray-tracing support, Manhattans skyscrapers reflected off one another realistically, as did a series of lifelike puddles in a busy Times Square.
The PS5 version of Miles Morales has a special Performance mode, which turns off effects such as ray tracing and uses upscaled 4K in favor of a higher framerate. When I switched to this mode and zipped through the city at a silky 60 frames per second while still enjoying beautiful visuals, I felt like I was experiencing something that simply couldnt be done on previous-gen consoles. This made it extremely hard to go back to the PS4 version of Miles Morales, which often chugged below 30 frames per second.

The PlayStation 3 launched on November 11, 2006 in Japan and November 17, 2006 in North America. Ps5 Review: Heat And Noise
Thanks to its massive internal fan and large vents along the inside of the chassis, the PS5 stayed cool and mostly quiet during my time with it. I rarely noticed any noise coming out of the console, even as I spent hours exploring Astros Playroom or webbing up crooks in Spider-Man. I did notice some rare moments of audible noise when running Star Wars Battlefront II, and could hear discs spinning pretty loudly when I first put Blu-rays in the machine. But compared to the jet-engine-like noises that come out of my PS4 when simply downloading a game, the PS5 is blissfully quiet.

The PS5 was released on November 12 in the USA, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea with the rest of the world getting in on the PlayStation action on November 19th. There was no black variant to be seen.

The name “PS5 Pro” comes from the convention Sony used for its upgraded PS4 console, the PS4 Pro, and there seems to be a consensus about that. MLID estimates the 2023-2024 timing based off Sony’s release of the PS4 Pro three years after the PS4.
The price of $600-$700 has been bandied about based on assumptions about typical $100 or so price differentials across models. But given how little we know about what will be inside, and not knowing when the current upward pressure on prices caused by shortages will end, it’s almost impossible to even guess.
