Ps5 Review: Backwards Compatibility
The PS5 works with nearly all PS4 games, which is a huge step up from Sonys complete lack of backwards compatibility last generation. I tested close to a dozen PS4 games on PS5, including The Last of Us Part II, God of War, Mortal Kombat 11, Tetris Effect and Resident Evil 2, and almost all of them loaded faster and ran better than they did on my launch PS4. Both digital and disc-based PS4 games worked without a hitch on my PS5, and my physical movies worked just fine on the systems 4K Blu-ray drive.
The PS5 allows you to take advantage of any PS4 Pro enhancements a game offers, so games that have higher resolution or frame rate modes benefit the most from Sonys new console. As someone coming from a launch PS4, the ability to finally enjoy God of Wars high-frame rate mode or play Tetris Effect in 4K felt almost worth the price of admission on its own .
The PS5 is designed to work with most first-party and officially licensed PS4 accessories, and I had no issues bringing my existing last-gen gear over. Pairing my DualShock 4 to the PS5 was as simple as plugging it in via USB cable, and my existing headsets worked just fine with the DualSenses 3.5 mm audio jack.
Third-party wired controllers, such as my Hori Fightpad and Victrix Pro FS Fight Stick, also worked perfectly as I mashed buttons in Mortal Kombat. Just keep in mind that the DualShock 4 only works with backwards compatible PS4 games, so you wont be able to use it for PS5-only titles.

The PS5 has been out for over a year now and gamers are still struggling to get their hands on Sonys newest console. While stock issues have plagued the PS5 ever since it launched in 2020, restocks are getting much better.
The sad tale began in November 2020, when excited gamers tore open PS5 parcels that they had pre-ordered, only to find them replaced with cat food, a George Foreman grill and a bag of grain. Whenever more PS5s were made available, they were snapped up almost immediately, with scalpers leading the charge.
In November 2021, it was reported that Sony was revising down its production of consoles from 16 million to 15 million between April 2021 and March 2022. On the PS5s first birthday, Sonys CEO Jim Ryan gave gamers a quick update on the stock situation in a short blog post. We continue to see historic demand for PS5 and we understand the inventory constraints remain a source of frustration for many of our customers, Ryan wrote. Rest assured that we are laser-focused on doing everything in our power to ship as many units as possible, its something we work on every day across the company and remains my top priority. Unfortunately, one of the main reasons for the shortage of PS5 consoles is due to scalpers. These opportunistic people have been using bots to scan retailers for PS5 stock when it becomes available and buy as many of the consoles as they can in one go.
Once they have the highly-desirable console, they will then sell them for extortionate prices, often for thousands of dollars. Business Insider reported one reseller managed to get hold of 200 PS5 consoles and managed to sell them for more than $40,000.
While this isnt illegal, its not exactly the most morally sound thing to do. But at least its not as bad as some people whove been pretending to sell PS5 consoles on eBay by simply posting photos of the console and scamming people to bid for them when there was no PS5 on offer.
It might seem absurd to buy a PS5 for over $1,000, especially as its launch game lineup isnt particularly profound. But with the coronavirus pandemic seeing more people staying at home, some PlayStation fans are clearly desperate to get their hands on a new console to keep them entertained.
We advise you avoid buying from such resellers, fake or otherwise. At $499 the PS5 is still quite an expensive console and it currently doesn’t have a huge library of games. So if you can wait until later this year, youre likely to have a lot more PS5 games to choose from and Sony should have more consoles available.

Ps5 Review: Performance And Games
That cross, circle, square, and triangle pattern on the inside of the PS5’s fins is just lovely.
Right, straight off the bat, there is one thing that I need to discuss in this PS5 review when talking about performance and it’s something that readers of T3 will be used to by now if they have just read my Xbox Series X and S reviews. And that thing is storage space.
The PS5 is advertised as shipping with an 825GB SSD, which on paper sounds rather large, even if it is less than the 1TB drive that the Xbox Series X is advertised as coming with.
Just as the Xbox Series X doesn’t actually have 1TB of useable room for games, apps, and media out of the box, with just 800GB available, the PS5 follows suit and technically only has 667GB of useable space when first switched on.

Now, look, I realise that you can install plenty of AAA games with that amount of space, but when you consider that right now at launch you can’t actually make use of the console’s hardware expansion port , and that flagship last-gen PlayStation systems came with more storage space, you can’t help but feel a little disappointed.
Hardcore gamers will absolutely want more storage space in their PS5 and, in my mind, the sooner Sony can turn on its M.2 SSD drive expansion port, the better. Especially so as both Microsoft’s systems can be upgraded in storage right now and it can be done easier, too.

What Is The Difference Between The Ps5 Standard And Ps5 Digital Edition
The biggest difference between the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition is price. The standard PS5 retails at $499/£449, while the PS5 Digital Edition retails for $399/£359.
The other big difference that we know is that the PS5 digital console will not have a disc drive. As such, this will affect you in the following ways:
- You will not be able to purchase and use physical copies of PlayStation 5 games
- If you have a PS4 physical game that can be upgraded to a PS5 version, this can only be used on the physical console so youll lose out on the upgrade
- Any disc based PlayStation 4 games that you have will not work on the PS5 digital console
- The lack of a disc drive in the PS5 digital will mean that the console could run quieter though confirmation is required here

There’s no public reason why the PS5 is late in the UK.
But Sony hinted that it was prioritising other countries first in a statement.
“As we have just announced in our PS5 Showcase, were only a couple of months away from launching the next generation of play.
“Starting on November 12, PS5 will be available in seven key markets: the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.
“The global rollout will continue on November 19 with launches throughout the rest of the world.”

There are two versions of the PlayStation 5: one with a disc drive and one without. It’s a strategy could well prove crucial for the next console generation it lets Sony keep at least one model more affordable while still offering a more fully-featured PS5.

Ps5 Pro Price And Release Date
The biggest factor around a potential PS5 Pro for many people will be what price tag PlayStation attaches to it.
The current PS5 costs £450 / $499 / 499 but is still hard to come by so there are more than enough gamers happy to pay the top whack for one.
That and considering the PS4 Pro consistently sat at around £100 / $100 / 100 more than the base PS4 for their respective lifespans, suggests you could be expected to cough up a similar amount more.
It could be though that Sony releases the PS5 Pro at the exact same price as the PS5, while making the base model cheaper, much like it did with PS4.
In terms of release date, it has been suggested that Sony will follow the similar three-year release gap as it did with the PS4 Pro model, making the PS5 Pro likely for late-2023. Indeed, the RedGamingTech YouTube channel’s sources claim exactly that. Although it could slip to early-2024 if the ongoing chip shortage continues to have an effect.
This impression was compounded in late May 2022, when TCL held a press conference about future TVs that indicated it expects a PS5 Pro model to release in either 2023 or 2024 .
In a new conference, TCL Technology have said that a new Xbox Series S/X and PS5 Pro are coming in 2023/2024.
