A bit ago Sony said it “believed in generations.” That belief isn’t strong enough to completely wipe out the PS4–at least not yet.

Jim Ryan now says supporting both systems in a slow generational transition is the best move. He’s actually right.
“We do feel that we have a responsibility to that very large PS4 community, and an opportunity to carry on making great PS4 games for as long as the need is there,” Ryan said in the latest issue of Edge magazine.
“And I think that is the right thing to do, it’s the rational thing to do, and I think you will see a tail with PS4 that you did not see with PS3. But that said as time passes you’re going to see more and more emphasis on PS5 development and the PS5 SKU will be the lead SKU.”

Sony confirms it will no longer offer free PS4 to PS5 upgrades of of future cross-gen first-party games.
Today Sony reversed its massively unpopular next-gen pricing scheme and will now offer a free Horizon Forbidden West PS4 to PS5 upgrade. In the same announcement, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says Horizon Forbidden West is the last free upgrade. From now on, any PS4 to PS5 upgrade of a first-party cross-gen title will cost $10.
“I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles -both digital and physical*-will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to any exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment,” Ryan said.
The reality is Sony has already been charging extra for PS5 upgrades of previously-released PS4 titles, including:

Does Battlefield 2042 have cross-play? You bet. Battlefield 2042 cross-play does exist, making it the first Battlefield game to have that functionality.
