It’s safe to say the PS Camera is far from an essential PS4 accessory, unless you have PlayStation VR. If you’re picking up the VR headset, make sure you either get a bundle or a Camera separately, because you must have it for VR.
For everyone else, it’s tough to recommend the PlayStation Camera. The Playroom is a minor distraction that you probably won’t spend much time with, and the games with Camera integration are both slim and underwhelming. Having the system log you in automatically by facial recognition is neat, but if you’re the only user on your PS4 it’s a moot point.
And the voice commands for launching games and similar are available with any headset or microphone, so they’re not a reason to pick up a Camera. You’re better off putting the money towards a better gaming headset instead.
So unless you’re buying it for VR, we only recommend the PlayStation Camera if you regularly stream your gameplay. The PS4 already makes streaming a simple affair, and adding a Camera so your viewers can watch your face is also easy.
Otherwise, the investment doesn’t get you enough to justify the cost. This is especially the case as the PS4 is phased out and accessories aren’t available at a reasonable price from official sellers any more.

How To Find The Best Ps4 Camera Placement
The two obvious places you’d think to put the PS4 camera are either above or below your TV screen. But the Playstation VR doesn’t require a television. The screen is inside the headset, and the controls are based on the camera’s line of sight to the PSVR headset and the dual-shock or motion controllers in our hands.
The only part the TV plays in the process is that we’ve probably set up our gaming spot based on its location. But PSVR games are different from normal ones. While some are great to play while sitting on a couch, others may require you to stand and move. So more important than the placement of the television is the area in which you’re going to stand and play games.
And this doesn’t need to be right in front of the TV.
For most of us, the camera will probably end up above or below the TV because we’ve designed our play area to accommodate it. But if you don’t have enough space right in front of the big screen, you can have the PS4 camera mounted on a different wall or even to an adjustable pole like a microphone stand. The important part is to have the proper playing space in front of the camera.

Ps4 Camera Games That Aren’t Vr
Even if you don’t want to get PS VR, there are a handful of games that have special features for the PS Camera by itself. Wikipedia has a list of PS Camera compatible games highlights include Alien: Isolation, all Just Dance games since 2014, LittleBigPlanet 3, Surgeon Simulator, and Tearaway Unfolded.
Of course, none of these games require the camera, and unless you love motion controls, you probably won’t get much additional enjoyment from it. If you like party games, it might be worth the price of admission for an evening with friends messing around on Just Dance, though.
Voice Capabilities Of The Playstation Camera
The Camera’s four-microphone array allows the system to capture and record high quality sound and to accurately detect where voices are originating in the room. It also lets you chat without a headset. But there’s another even more impressive use.
With the Camera, you can control the PlayStation 4 using voice commands. You can also do this with the mono headset that comes standard with the PS4, but then it’s harder to pretend you’re the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise barking orders at a computer.

Critical Response To The Device
Although there are very few games that can utilize the features of the PlayStation Camera as of January 2014, people seem to be impressed by the functionality demonstrated by the apps in “The Playroom.” The AR interactivity both with the controller and with user gestures gets praise. Who wouldn’t like to bat around cute little virtual robots in their own living room?
There is, however, a worry that because the PlayStation Camera does not come standard with the PlayStation 4, there is little incentive for game companies to spend time integrating special features for the accessory there’s no telling if people who would buy their games have the device. The general consensus seems to be that the Camera is fun and responsive, but that it isn’t absolutely necessary.

How It Differs From Xbox One Kinect
The device that draws the most direct comparison to the PlayStation Camera is rival Microsoft’s Xbox One Kinect, Xbox One’s motion and voice control peripheral device .
The two most obvious differences are that the new Kinect comes standard with the Xbox One, whereas the PlayStation Camera is an optional accessory, and that the new Kinect is much larger and cannot be placed on top of your television. But there are some notable, less visible technical differences, too.
Both devices incorporate high definition cameras, but Xbox One Kinect has a single ultra-wide-angle 1080p resolution video camera, higher than the 1280 by 800 of the PlayStation Camera’s dual cameras.
Xbox One Kinect does have another camera, hidden behind the faceplate of the device, but it is actually an active infrared camera. Among other things, it gives the Xbox One better vision in the dark and allows it to cancel out ambient light that could otherwise interfere. PlayStation Camera will be more finicky than Kinect about environmental lighting levels as a result. The new Kinect also includes an IR Blaster that throws out IR rays, allowing it to do things like control your TV or cable box. PS4 and its Camera do not include IR capabilities at all, so they can’t be controlled by a universal remote, and certainly can’t control your other entertainment devices, although there is talk of a BlueTooth remote for PS4 in the future.

The Sony PlayStation 4 can recognize your face and automatically sign you in, but first you’ll have to configure the camera.
The Sony PlayStation 4 comes with a stand-alone motion-sensing camera that can be used to play certain games, sign in to your PS4 profile and access other console features. But before you begin using the camera, you’ll need to teach it to recognize your face.
Here’s how to configure the PlayStation 4’s camera.
1. Create a PlayStation 4 user profile. If you haven’t taken this step, see our article on how to do it.
2. Add face data. Once you’ve set up a PlayStation 4 user profile, you’ll be prompted to add “face data” to your account in other words, let the camera record your face at various angles in order to create a composite visual profile of your appearance.
The data is associated with your PlayStation Network account, but it is stored locally only on the PlayStation 4 you link to that account.
3. Stand in front of the camera. The screen will display an image of what the PlayStation4 camera can see, and identify the objects it recognizes as faces. If there’s more than one face on the screen at a time, select your own face with the controller.
To help the camera get the best shot of your head, stand about 6 feet from the camera, and make sure the room is well lit, with most of the light coming from behind the PlayStation 4 camera, not behind you.
