Sony’s issue tracker notes issues with the PlayStation Store, account management, and “gaming and social”
Update – July 19 12:30pm PST: The PSN service tracker now reports that “all services are up and running.”

PlayStation Network servers are down today, July 19, as the new cat game Stray is presumably causing an influx of folks eager to step into the paws of an adventurous orange tabby. according to both player reports, PS5 error codes, and Sony’s official sources.
At the time of writing, the PSN service status tracker says “some services are experience issues,” so it’s important to note that there are some components of the PSN that are still in working order. Also, for what it’s worth, we experienced no issues downloading games from PlayStation Plus and the PlayStation Store here on the US West Coast.
Still, PlayStation says a network outage will prevent some players from accessing parts of the PlayStation Store, account management, and “gaming and social” features more broadly. As it stands right now, Sony hasn’t offered any timetable for when these services could come back, and the issue seems to have been affecting players for at least a couple of hours.
As we’ve yet to hear any official word from Sony on a resolution timeline, all we have to go on is speculation surrounding the nature of the outage. And again, its timing coinciding with the release of the acclaimed Stray is likely no coincidence.
Inability To Use Playstation 3 Content
While most games remained playable in their offline modes, the PlayStation 3 was unable to play certain Capcom titles in any form. Streaming video providers throughout different regions such as Hulu, Vudu, Netflix and LoveFilm displayed the same maintenance message. Some users claimed to be able to use Netflix’s streaming service but others were unable.

British Information Commissioners Office
Following a formal investigation of Sony for breaches of the UK’s Data Protection Act 1998, the Information Commissioners’ Office issued a statement highly critical of the security Sony had in place:
If you are responsible for so many payment card details and log-in details then keeping that personal data secure has to be your priority. In this case that just didn’t happen, and when the database was targeted albeit in a determined criminal attack the security measures in place were simply not good enough.There’s no disguising that this is a business that should have known better. It is a company that trades on its technical expertise, and there’s no doubt in my mind that they had access to both the technical knowledge and the resources to keep this information safe.
Sony was fined £250,000 for security measures so poor they did not comply with the British law.

Thief Using Social Media Scam To Steal Playstations Nypd Says
Sony PlayStation reported outages in its network early on Wednesday morning, sparking a social media panic among gamers.
The outage affected the PS Store, PS Now cloud gaming services, and games that rely on a network connection.
The problems started at around 8:30 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, according to the PlayStation status page.
The outage isnt affecting everyone, as gamers based in the Midwestern United States and Canada appear to have no difficult accessing their systems while users in New York are reporting error messages, according to The Verge.

All Services Are Experiencing Issues
Update 4/12 4:58 pm PT: PlayStation Network is back up according to the official Network Status page.
PlayStation’s official PSN Status page is now listing all online services as up and running. If you log into PSN on your PlayStation device now, you should be able to engage with online services.
PlayStation has not acknowledged the temporary outage that lasted a little under an hour.
PlayStation Network is currently down.
Reports from PlayStation owners online as well as the PlayStation status page indicate that PSN is currently experiencing some technical difficulties.
As shown on IGN sister site DownDetector, there have been over 13,000 reports of an outage with PSN since 4 pm PT.
According to the official PlayStation Network status tracker, all services, from Account Management, online gaming, PlayStation Now, and the PSN Store are experiencing issues.
No official word yet on why exactly there’s an outage or how long it will be until services are back to normal. So check back with IGN as we’ll update this story when services resume, or there’s an official announcement.

Timeline Of The Outage
On April 20, 2011, Sony acknowledged on the official PlayStation Blog that it was “aware certain functions of the PlayStation Network” were down. Upon attempting to sign in via the PlayStation 3, users received a message indicating that the network was “undergoing maintenance”. The following day, Sony asked its customers for patience while the cause of outage was investigated and stated that it may take “a full day or two” to get the service fully functional again.
The company later announced an “external intrusion” had affected the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. This intrusion occurred between April 17 and April 19. On April 20, Sony suspended all PlayStation Network and Qriocity services worldwide. Sony expressed their regrets for the downtime and called the task of repairing the system “time-consuming” but would lead to a stronger network infrastructure and additional security. On April 25, Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold reiterated on the PlayStation Blog that fixing and enhancing the network was a “time intensive” process with no estimated time of completion. However, the next day Sony stated that there was a “clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online”, with some services expected to be restored within a week. Furthermore, Sony acknowledged the “compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems.”
On May 23 Sony stated that the outage costs were $171 million.

Sony Online Entertainment Outage
On May 3 Sony stated in a press release that there may be a correlation between the attack that had occurred on April 16 towards the PlayStation Network and one that compromised Sony Online Entertainment on May 2. This portion of the attack resulted in the theft of information on 24.6 million Sony Online Entertainment account holders. The database contained 12,700 credit card numbers, particularly those of non-U.S. residents, and had not been in use since 2007 as much of the data applied to expired cards and deleted accounts. Sony updated this information the following day by stating that only 900 cards on the database were still valid. The attack resulted in the suspension of SOE servers and games. SOE granted 30 days of free time, plus one day for each day the server was down, to users of Clone Wars Adventures, DC Universe Online, EverQuest, EverQuest II, EverQuest Online Adventures, Free Realms, Pirates of the Burning Sea, PlanetSide, Poxnora, Star Wars Galaxies and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, as well as other forms of compensation for all other Sony Online games.
Security experts Eugene Lapidous of AnchorFree, Chester Wisniewski of Sophos Canada and Avner Levin of Ryerson University criticized Sony, questioning its methods of securing user data. Lapidous called the breach “difficult to excuse” and Wisniewski called it “an act of hubris or simply gross incompetence”.

Change To Terms And Conditions
It has been suggested that a change to the PSN terms and conditions announced on September 15, 2011, was motivated by the large damages being claimed by class action suits against Sony, in an effort to minimise the company’s losses. The new agreement required users to agree to give up their right to sue Sony over any future security breach, without first trying to resolve legal issues with an arbitrator. This included any ongoing class action suits initiated prior to August 20, 2011.
Another clause, which removed a user’s right to trial by jury should the user opt out of the clause , says:
If the Class Action Waiver clause is found to be illegal or unenforceable, this entire Section 15 will be unenforceable, and the dispute will be decided by a court and you and the Sony Entity you have a dispute with each agree to waive in that instance, to the fullest extent allowed by law, any trial by jury.
Sony guaranteed that a court of law in the respective country, in this case the US, would hold jurisdiction in regards to any rules or changes in the Sony PSN ToS:

Outages Have Hit Several Major Gaming Services

Services like PlayStation Network and Steam are reportedly coming back online after the sudden, mass outage earlier today.
Original story: A slew of different online services is currently experiencing difficulties including PlayStation Network, Steam, and Fortnite.
According to reports online, PSN is one of several online gaming services currently experiencing network issues. IGN sister site Down Detector reports that problems have spiked for PSN, Fortnite, and Steam within the last hour and there’s still no explanation for the outage.
IGN has confirmed that both Steam and PlayStation Network are down. On the PS5, a message reads “Services are busy right now. We’ll be back soon.”
Fortnite is currently impacted by a broader internet issue affecting a range of online services. We’ll provide an update when players are able to jump in as normal.

PlayStation users across Europe, North America, and other major regions have been reporting an outage on the PlayStation Network on Tuesday, April 12. If youre experiencing issues logging in and playing games online, heres a quick rundown of all there is to know.
The PlayStation Network was last experiencing major outages on Tuesday, April 12.
Having since been confirmed by Sony, the issues appeared to be widespread across the network. From playing games online to simply logging in, PSN was seemingly impacted across the board according to the PlayStation Network site.
Some players reported that they could still access online services during this time, while many others didnt have as much luck.

Over on Reddit, multiple users have reported issues with connecting to the PSN servers, as well as not being able to play online.

Could this outage be connected somewhat with the launch of Stray on PlayStation Plus today? I wouldnt be surprised if it was, as the game seems to be one heck of a ride, with our review scoring it a 9/10 and saying, Stray is absolutely worth checking out, particularly if youre subscribed to Sonys new Playstation Plus Extra or Premium services. For me, its one of the most memorable experiences of the year.
