“PlayStation VR always had a tough road ahead of it. Compared to high-end gaming PCs needed to power the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, the PlayStation 4 is under-powered. The fact that Sony was retrofitting its old 2010-released Move controllers and PlayStation Camera to work with PSVR, which were peripherals that werent initially designed for VR, also does not bode well for the platform. After going eyes-on with it over the past few days, I must admit that its surprisingly impressive in some areas, but it also has some issues.”

How to set up and get the most out of your sleek new gaming headset

The PlayStation VR released a few years back, but it actually feels like theres more hype around it right now.

Thats in part because its now incredibly cheap, with a variety of bundles selling for about half the price of the original PSVR model. But also, the PlayStation VR has arguably cultivated the best virtual reality games lineup of any device to date, thanks to Sonys partnerships yielding games that you just cant play elsewhere.

Oculus Quest 2 Vs Playstation Vr: Specs

ultimate PS4 VR console bundle

The Quest offers a higher resolution image, at 1832 x 1920 per eye versus PlayStation VRs 960 x 1080. If youre wondering, yes, the difference is very noticeable. Both, however, are capable of 120 Hz refresh rates.

Surprisingly perhaps, PSVR offers the superior field of view, at 96 degrees compared to Quests 89 degrees. Nonetheless, the Quests display is so much more crisp and clear that the end result here is a foregone conclusion.

How To Set Up Playstation Vr For Ps5

The bad news is that even if you already own a working PSVR setup, it wont work out of the box with PlayStation 5. The good news is that the only part you need is free, and once you have that everything is the same.

The issue is that the PlayStation 5 doesnt have the custom port used by the PlayStation Camera accessory. Luckily Sony is providing free adapters to any PSVR owners all you have to do is provide your PSVR serial number and the company will send you a free adapter in the post.

Once you have it, simply connect the PlayStation Camera into the adapter, and follow the above steps for the PS4 in exactly the same way for the PS5. Once you get to step 5) simply connect the PlayStation Camera via the new adapter into one of the rear USB ports on your console, and youre sorted.

One quick note: you might be tempted to simply use this as an excuse to upgrade to the new HD Camera for PlayStation 5. Dont. This is only designed for filming yourself for livestreaming, and is not compatible with PlayStation VR. It may prove to be a part of the expected PlayStation VR 2 whenever that arrives, but for the moment it wont help you with any VR setup at all.

Playstation 4 Pro Vs Ps: Playstation Vr

When it comes to PlayStation VR, real virtual-reality afficionados may wonder which platform is the best. Strictly speaking, regardless of which platform you opt for, PlayStation VR should really be practically identical in terms of experience and performance.

Seeing as PlayStation VR has been built from the ground up for PS4s specifications, it should come as no surprise that everything runs incredibly smoothly even if some content doesnt look as pin-sharp as it does on a high-end headset. The PlayStation 4 Pro, however, uses its extra power to help with the heavy lifting, allowing some games to render more content on-screen during play or make use of Sonys upscaling technology to render textures at a higher resolution and downsample them to the PlayStation VRs 1080p display.

Having used PlayStation VR on both the PS4 and PS4 Pro, its hard to say youll have a better experience on one machine over the other but on PS4 Pro PlayStation VR does feel more comfortable to use. Many games now hit the 120fps sweet spot and titles like Driveclub VR really benefit from the PS4 Pros use of Supersampling. Spectators also get a better experience as the PS4 Pro outputs a high-resolution feed of the headsets screen to the TV, compared to the lower-resolution one the PS4 outputs.

Its Comfortable But Doesnt Fit Quite Like Youd Expect

It is pleasantly easy to place on the PlayStation VR. All cans have a learning curve, but this one feels especially elegant. A button on the rear expands the headband, and a button on the front goes the display back and forth, which means it is possible to ensure the picture is in focus.

It is simple, even though it does not fit quite how I expected it to match. The head strap stays somewhat high, resting around three-quarters of the way up the back of your mind.

Although I could pull it down to feel much more like a baseball cap, doing thus raised the screens themselves and left them hard to look at, nevertheless, in comparison with this front-heavy HTC Vive, its still an extremely comfy headset.

An additional thing to notice, though I had problems with the cans I had been given in most eight demos. As soon as I appeared, they slipped back every moment.

I can not always blame the PSVR because headphones are not included in the machine, but I could say in my own time, along with different cans, I have not had that matter.

When I had to guess, it had been a consequence of the head strap, and it is a plastic that lacks the grippy, textured faces of this Vives elastic waistband . Because of this, I mean to play with the PlayStation VR using earbuds, which should worsen the matter entirely.

PS VR: Top 10 Questions Answered

For now at least, the PlayStation VR is truly different to anything else on the market. While Oculus Rift has closed in on the cost disparity, the PSVR only requires a PS4 console to run, not an expensive PC setup.

Although we’ve already mentioned the Oculus Go as a rival, it doesn’t offer the immersive gaming quality the PSVR does. Different story for Oculus Quest 2, though. Although Go was a good way into VR for lots of people it’s now been discontinued it doesn’t quickly match up.

When you think about it, it really is remarkable that the affordable PSVR solution is as capable as it is. It has its problems, but by and large the PlayStation VR proves that not only is console VR viable, it’s actually enjoyable, too.

We’ve now tried dozens of games on the PlayStation VR console, from Rocksteady’s impressive Batman: Arkham VR, to the laugh-out-loud funny Job Simulator, to the tear-jerking Wayward Sky and even gun-peripheral-toting horror game Farpoint VR. Some of these titles were more fun than others, obviously, but all of them made the same point: PSVR doesn’t suck.

Before we go on talking about PlayStation VR’s finer points , let’s get the basics out of the way.

If you didn’t already own the PlayStation Camera or Move Motion Controllers, the PSVR Launch Day bundle was the better bet, but now we’re further down the line the bundles and the messaging around exactly what components you’ll need are much better.

How Does Psvr Work

Like other virtual reality headsets on the market, PlayStation VR has the arduous task of completely immersing you in a video game by producing two images simultaneously and then sending them to a headset a few feet away. But unlike competing devices , PS VR can do it using only the PlayStation 4’s built-in GPU.

It achieves this by using the PlayStation Camera to track nine different points of light on the headset, plus the lights on either the Move controllers or on the DualShock 4, depending on which game you’re playing. It’s surprisingly accurate given the fact that it’s only using a single camera to track what’s happening… but it’s not foolproof by any stretch of the imagination.

We’ll cover performance in detail in a minute, but be prepared for the camera to lose track of the controllers. A lot. Because Sony only uses one camera instead of two, it’s harder for PlayStation VR to track you if you get up and walk around than it is for a system like the HTC Vive, which can offer true room-scale VR.

If you decide to get up and wander around, the PSVR can follow you to an extent, but don’t expect to take more than a few steps in any direction without a warning from the system that you’re straying too far away.

And yes, it’s just as cool as it sounds.

Can Oculus Rift Be Used With Ps4

The Oculus Rift was the original VR headset from Oculus. It was launched in March 2016, beating the PlayStation VR by a few months. Designed to work with PCs, the Oculus Rift is a tethered VR headset. It is now discontinued, but you do find secondhand Rifts for sale. The Oculus Rift relied on external sensors to track the movement of the headset. Like the PS4, this tracking system used LED positioning lights to keep track of where the headset was positioned. The Rift works with one sensor positioned in front of the user, however, for full 360 freedom of movement, three sensors are recommended. These sensors are similar to the PlayStation camera, but they are not interchangeable or compatible. This is one of the many reasons why you cannot use an Oculus Rift headset on a PS4.

The Rift was discontinued in 2019 to make way for the Oculus Quest and eventually the Oculus Quest 2. Both of these headsets are untethered, meaning that they dont use cables to connect to the system These headsets are completely self-contained, meaning they dont require external sensors or connections to work. Instead, they use cameras mounted in the headset to track your movements and position. While you might think that an untethered system could connect wirelessly to a PS4, this is not the case. The Oculus headsets from the Rift through to the Oculus Quest 2 are all designed to run on Android operating systems like Windows.

What You Need To Make Playstation Vr Work

While the PlayStation VR packages comes with everything mentioned above, you cant use the headset or experience VR with just that set of accessories. Thats right, if you own a PlayStation 4 and purchase the PlayStation VR bundle listed above, you will not have a functioning VR unit. To make PlayStation VR work you will also need the PlayStation Camera.

The PlayStation Camera has a suggested retail price of $59.99, but with a quick search on Amazon you should be able to find one for $45 or less. That isnt a great deal to spend when youre already forking over $400 on the PlayStation VR headset, plus you presumably picked up a PlayStation 4 at some point for around $350 or possibly more. Just make sure you have a PlayStation Camera in your possession when youre ready to get started with the PlayStation VR headset.

The PlayStation 5 does VR, but don’t expect a new headset, or PS5-upgraded VR games, anytime soon

The PlayStation 5 is ready to push gaming into a lot of new territories. But VR? Not quite so much. Yes, you’ll be able to play PlayStation VR games on a PS5, but it’s not a reason to upgrade.

Sony’s dive into virtual reality on the PlayStation 4 came at a time in 2016 when VR was making big splashes: The Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive and VR goggles on phones were everywhere. Even years later, PSVR is still a surprisingly capable platform full of good games, but Sony’s headset feels pretty old and clunky compared to more advanced PC and standalone options.

Read more:

Sony may have a more advanced version of PlayStation VR that could emerge in another year or two, once the PS5 has had a chance to stand on its own for a while. The PS4 came out in 2013, but the PSVR didn’t emerge until three years later.

Right now, the existing PSVR headset will work with the PS5 and existing PS4 VR games should work. But you’ll need a lot of other gear to make it happen.
