Ps5 Review: T3’s Testing Setup
For our PS5 review T3 used the incredible LG CX TV.
The PlayStation 5 is Sony’s flagship next-gen games console, and it is loaded with top tech and advanced features such as support for 120 Hz refresh rates, AMD Freesync, HDR, 4K resolutions, 60 fps+ framerates, and much more besides. As such, we wanted to review it with the best possible TV available for the job.
After all, what’s the point in investing in a next-gen console capable of mind-blowing graphics if your TV throttles it all with out-of-date tech? Exactly. That’s why T3 reviewed the PS5 console on a 2020 model LG CX television.
In our LG CX review we gave the TV a maximum score of 5 stars and, it was so highly rated, it actually won Best Gaming TV at the T3 Awards 2020. Naturally, the LG CX, which is available in a range of sizes, now also sits at the top of our best gaming TV guide, too.
Simply put, the LG CX has the technology and features to keep up with the PS5. If you’re looking for a TV upgrade to get the best out of both the standard PS5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, then the LG CX is T3’s top choice.
Ps6 Specs And Hardware
The PlayStation 6 will surely improve in more ways than the features listed above, but since we’re several years out from launch, it’s not very helpful right now to guess what kind of hardware will be available then.
In general, though, expect a PlayStation with an even faster, more-capable CPU and more responsive controls.
An entirely made-up, just-for-fun concept video released by DZ Migo is one perspective of the console in terms of the design. Similarly to the creator’s other far-out concepts, it shows the PS6 as rugged and dark, with elements presumably taken from various versions of the Xbox, starkly different from the PS5. There’s another entirely different render of the PS6 here.
Then again, Sony could go the complete opposite direction and choose something minimalistic, borrowing design aspects from older consoles. At least, that’s the idea with this PS6 concept from Yanko Design:
We’ll know more about the console’s design, games, backward compatibility, controller and headset, and more hardware details as we get closer to launch.
There Are Already Lots Of Ps5 Games To Look Forward To
While the list of brand-new PS5 games available on launch day is pretty short, there are a number of titles that should quickly round out the PS5s lineup into 2021.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and GranTurismo 7 are both set to launch in the first half of 2021. The aforementioned Horizon Forbidden West is expected in the second half of 2021. And Sony has announced a sequel to 2018s God of War for 2021, too.
There are a lot of big third-party titles to look forward to in the PS5s life span as well, including Final Fantasy XVI, which will launch first on PS5 Resident Evil Village, the eighth mainline game in the popular horror series thats scheduled for 2021 Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world game set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter and the spooky-looking Five Nights at Freddys: Security Breach.
If you want to get a picture of the early lineup for the PS5, weve compiled an extensive list of games you can look forward to playing at launch and beyond. And if youre looking for recommendations of what to actually play on your new console right now, weve got a guide for that, too.

How Will Playstation Plus Work On Ps5
God of War
PlayStation Plus is a subscription thats currently required to play games online on the PlayStation 4. It costs $9.99/month or $59.99/year. Alongside online play, PlayStation Plus also provides players with discounts on certain games, as well as two free PS4 games every month. Once you claim these games, youll have access to them as long as you have an active membership.
Sony hasnt officially announced that PlayStation Plus will be required for online play on PlayStation 5 however, it seems almost certain, given the programs popularity on PS4. By the end of March 2020, Sony had racked up 41.5 million PlayStation Plus subscribers. Theres no word yet on when or if Sony will start to offer free PS5 games to PS Plus subscribers.
However, in September, Sony unveiled the PlayStation Plus Collection, a curated library of digital PlayStation 4 games that PS Plus subscribers will be able to download for PS5 at no additional cost. Confirmed titles included as part of the PlayStation Plus Collection are Batman: Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, God of War, Monster Hunter: World, and Persona 5.
Update : Weve updated this piece with a wealth of new details revealed on Sept. 16 during Sonys PlayStation 5 Showcase.
What Will Change In June If I Prepaid Both Ps Plus And Ps Now Subscriptions
For those who are subscribed to both services and prepaid for them, Sony will convert subscribers to PS Plus Premium with the expiration date being whichever of the two is the farthest out. This means a person subscribed to PS Now until December 2022 but to PS Plus to December 2023, the December 2023 will be the new expiration date for their PS Plus Premium subscription.

Our first look at the PSVR 2?
A patent filing from Sony could be giving us a first look at its PSVR 2 headset. While details are a little bare the patent discovered by DistroXR shows off a head-mounted display that bears a strong resemblance to the PSVR headset design, albeit with a few modern upgrades.
Patents are by no means an official confirmation though, so while there is a strong chance the PSVR 2 will look like what we see in the patent, we might also get something entirely different.
PSVR 2 could be backwards compatible
A new leak from ResetEra has suggested that the PSVR 2 headset will have access to a large launch library thanks to backwards compatibility – letting users play every current PSVR game on the new hardware.
We have to take every claim with a pinch of salt but honestly, we’d have been surprised if the PSVR 2 wasn’t backwards compatible. Otherwise, players would be locked out of some of the best VR games and would have barely anything to play when the system launches.
No official PSVR 2 details in sight?
Sony has confirmed via the official PlayStation Blog that there won’t be any PSVR 2 announcements during September 9, 2021’s PlayStation Showcase. While plenty of new and announced PS5 games will make an appearance during the presentation, PSVR 2 fans will just have to wait a bit longer before the future of VR is revealed for Sony’s current-gen machine.

How Much Will The Playstation 5 Cost In The Uk
The existence of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is a hint that gamers may be in for quite an investment with the top tier PS5 device. Sony may feel like it needs an entry-level machine at a lesser price point for those who cant find the cash for the top tier machine.
However, Sony cant risk going too high with its cost. Those with long memories will remember that the PS3 launched in the UK at the £425 mark and consumers turned their back on the console in favour of the Xbox 360. Theres also little doubt that purse strings will be pulled tighter than usual this Christmas, with many suffering job uncertainty or loss as a result of the coronavirus economic downturn.
Thankfully, Sony is releasing its console in a direct head-to-head with the Xbox Series X. This competition will hopefully drive down the price of both consoles. We also know that console manufacturers are happy to take a loss on hardware. Theres an understanding that a big install base of players buying lots of games and performing many microtransactions is worth the short-term loss.
With that all in mind, were hopeful that the PlayStation 5 premium edition will hover around the same price point as the PS4 at launch. Expect a console around the £300 to £355 mark. Then we might see a Digital Edition creep in at a compelling £275.
At this stage, no pricing has been announced for any of the peripherals.
If You’re Looking For A Sony Handheld Experience The Ps Vita Is The Way To Go
It’s not looking likely that Sony will release a handheld console soon, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever release another in the future.
The Nintendo Switch and Valve’s upcoming Steam Deck show that there is a handheld console market to be tapped into. Though, Sony might not be ready just yet to dive back into it, after the lackluster response to the PS Vita.
It could be a while till we see a new Sony handheld console, if at all. In the meantime, the PS Vita is still an excellent device that’s worth your time.

When Does The Playstation 5 Go On Sale
Both versions of the PlayStation 5 launch on November 12th in the US, Japan, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. Theyll launch on November 19th in the rest of the world. The one exception is China Sony says it will announce a launch date for China in the future.
Pre-orders for the PS5 were a bit of a mess, though, sometimes selling out in less than a minute. And demand is likely to remain high throughout the holiday season, if not into 2021. So if youre thinking about picking up a PS5 now that its out, you might need a little luck to get your own.
Update November 12th, 1:30PM ET: Weve learned a lot more about the PS5 since we first published this article in September and reviewed it! so weve made numerous updates throughout.
Correction November 12th, 1:30PM ET: We originally said the PS5 had 802.11ac Wi-Fi, but it actually has 802.11ax Wi-Fi . We regret the error.
The Ps5 Is Backwards Compatible With Most Ps4 Games
Nearly every PS4 game will work on the PS5. To quote Sony on the matter: more than 99 percent of the 4,000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5. And even better, some PS4 games will run at higher or smoother frame rates on PS5, thanks to something Sony is calling Game Boost. In early tests, Digital Foundry found that the PS5 brings notable improvements to many PS4 games. See for yourself in this video:
That said, Sony says that some PS4 games will be missing functionality or may may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior on PS5. And 10 PS4 games arent playable at all on the PS5:
- Joes Diner
Youll also be able to play some PS3 and PS2 games on your PS5 through Sonys PlayStation Now cloud gaming service, which Sony only recently revealed would be supported by the new console.

New Playstation May Not Be Called Playstation 5
PlayStation 5, Xbox Scarlet – the next generation of consoles has been a hot topic in recent months and for good reason. With so many leaks regarding what the future will bring, and the time table matching up to previous “new gen” reveals, it’s smart to be looking ahead. With Sony having now confirmed that their eyes are firmly planted ahead, it’s time to dive a little bit into what that could mean.
Sony’s Kenichiro Yoshida sat down with the Financial Times recently to discuss what comes next for the brand and though he didn’t go into a whole lot of detail, he did mention that the next generation is “necessary.”
Yoshida-san told the publication, “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware.” He declined to comment on whether or not the rumored ‘PlayStation 5’ title would stick or if they were going to go the Xbox route and name it something out of left-field.
There was a leak earlier this year that the next PlayStation would be called Erebus, though Sony was quick to shut that down. Still – with Xbox continuing to stay their own course when it comes to generational naming and Sony having suddenly done quite a few 180s in recent weeks regarding their own business model, it is interesting to think about if that would affect something even as basic as their naming process.

What Kind Of Games Will The Playstation 5 Have
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
The PlayStation 5 will have all of the third-party releases that you would expect from every console. That means that games and franchises like Call of Duty, Destiny, Fortnite, NBA 2K, and FIFA will all be on the console. But the real draw of a console is its exclusive games, and Sony is very committed to that idea.
The PlayStation 5 already has a wealth of console exclusives headed its way. Here are the console exclusives that Sony announced during its Future of Gaming event on June 11:
- Astros Playroom
In September, Sony also revealed that Square Enixs Final Fantasy 16 is in development for PS5 as a console exclusive, and announced that a sequel to 2018s God of War is coming to PS5 in 2021.
Heres the launch lineup of Sony-published games. Note that Sony is raising the prices of first-party titles for this new console generation, charging anywhere from $49.99 to $69.99.
- Astros Playroom
- Demons Souls
- Sackboy A Big Adventure
- Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition
Ps5 Stock At Other Retailers
It should obviously go without saying that Amazon is not the only retailer that carries the PS5. Its definitely the best place to find a PlayStation 5 console in stock at any time, though. Thats because of all these hidden PS5 listings we told you about. As we mentioned, however, you have to be willing to pay a bit extra for those consoles.
If youre a hardcore gamer or you definitely need a PS5 to give someone as a gift, thats your best shot. But if youre willing to do some checking on a regular basis, there are other big retailers that restock the PlayStation 5 console all the time.

What About Playstation Vr
The original line of PlayStation VR headsets are compatible with the PlayStation 5, with caveats. The existing, PlayStation 4-based VR headsets require the PlayStation Camera, and if you want to connect that peripheral to the PlayStation 5, youll need a special adapter you can only order from Sony.
Additionally, the PS5 only supports the PSVR in PS4 games running in the PS5s backwards-compatibility mode. PS5 native games cant use previously released PSVR hardware at all. This, combined with the slowdown of new software for PSVR, makes it a poor investment for most people, though there is a solid library of existing titles for VR newcomers who are looking for things to play now, and arent worried about obsolete hardware.
PlayStation is working on new PS5-specific PSVR hardware which it claims will use just a single cable to connect to the console, but the release date for it is yet to be determined. With continuing supply issues for just about all consumer electronics devices, the wait could be longer than even PlayStation would like.
God Of War Ragnark Trailer
Following PS5s first system software beta last July, the consoles second beta will also introduce new customisation options across party chat, Game Base and accessibility settings, which Sony has detailed on the PlayStation Blog.
The features being tested will be made widely available when the final system software updates launch globally later this year.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed it will stream a new State of Play presentation this Wednesday, March 8.
Note: We wont have any updates on PlayStation VR2 titles or hardware in this broadcast, Sony said.
