The PlayStation 5 is ready to push gaming into a lot of new territories. But VR? Not quite so much. Yes, you’ll be able to play PlayStation VR games on a PS5, but it’s not a reason to upgrade.
Sony’s dive into virtual reality on the PlayStation 4 came at a time in 2016 when VR was making big splashes: The Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive and VR goggles on phones were everywhere. Even years later, PSVR is still a surprisingly capable platform full of good games, but Sony’s headset feels pretty old and clunky compared to more advanced PC and standalone options.

Sony may have a more advanced version of PlayStation VR that could emerge in another year or two, once the PS5 has had a chance to stand on its own for a while. The PS4 came out in 2013, but the PSVR didn’t emerge until three years later.
Right now, the existing PSVR headset will work with the PS5 and existing PS4 VR games should work. But you’ll need a lot of other gear to make it happen.

The Full Playstation Vr Experience
You need the PlayStation Camera just to make the PlayStation VR headset work. Thats the first step to get the most basic PlayStation VR setup. If you want the full experience youre going to also need to buy at least two PlayStation Move motion controllers. These run about $25 or so on Amazon at the moment, and were originally made for the PlayStation 3. Fear not, the PlayStation 3 Move controller is exactly what you need to get the most out of your PlayStation 4 VR experience. The PS3 Move controller will work just fine on the PS4.
At this point you may be asking why you need the Move controllers. You can use a standard Dual Shock 4 and everything will work fine. However, if you have Move controllers the movement tracking is more accurate and the experience is a bit more immersive. We dont yet know if all games will require the Dual Shock 4 or PlayStation Move controller as it seems at least a few will simply track your body movements. However, if you want to be able to enjoy every PlayStation VR game to maximum effect, you should pick up two PlayStation Move controllers.
Do You Really Need A Playstation Camera To Use Psvr
You don’t technically need the PlayStation Camera to use PSVR. However, PlayStation VR doesn’t function as a true virtual reality headset without a PlayStation Camera peripheral. There isn’t a way for the head tracking to work without a PlayStation Camera, so your view is fixed with no way to move it around if you don’t have that peripheral.
Using a PlayStation VR without the Camera peripheral locks you into the virtual theater mode. This mode places a large screen in front of you in a virtual space, simulating a big-screen television. Otherwise, it’s no different from watching a movie on a regular screen. The screen moves when you turn your head so that it’s always in front of you.

How To Set Up The Psvr
First, unplug the HDMI cable from the back of the PS4 and connect it to the port labeled HDMI TV on the back of the PSVR Processor Unit . This sends the signal to your TV.
Now, connect the PlayStation Camera to the AUX port on the PS4. Its labeled, and its the only port the PlayStation Camera cable fits.
Connect a new HDMI cable to the port labeled HDMI PS4 on the back of the Processor Unitours is pink, but yours will be black.
Connect the other end of the cable to the HDMI port on the back of the PS4. This sends the video from your PS4 to the PSVR.
Connect the USB cable to the back of the Processor Unit, and then to the PS4. This allows the two to communicate with each other.
Connect the AC power cord to the AC adapter, plug the cable into the back of the Processor Unit, and plug it into an outlet.
Next, connect the PSVR headset cable to the front of the Processor Unit, matching the symbols on the cables to the correct ports.
Now, put the PlayStation Camera on top of your TV using the provided bracket. Make sure its placed in the center and angled slightly downwardmore so if youre in a particularly small room.
You can now connect the included stereo headphones to the PSVR headset and turn everything on. Remember to press the power button on the PSVR headset, as it wont automatically turn on with your PlayStation.

Connect Your Playstation Vr Camera
The first step to hook up and setup Playstation VR is to connect your camera to your console.
First, place your camera above or below the center of your TV and point it centrally out into your room. Your camera will be able to track and watch your movements while you play virtual reality. Tracking is important, so make sure the camera is pointed at your play area clearly.
Plus the cameras cord into the matching port on the back of your Playstation console.
If you are trying to hook up to the PS5, you need the extra Camera PS4-to-PS5 adapter cable. to have Sony send you this adapter for free. When you receive it, plus your camera into the adapter and then the adapter into a USB port on the back of the PS5.
Psvr Games May Be Subtly Updated But Don’t Expect A Lot Yet
The PlayStation 4 Pro bumped up the quality and resolution of PSVR graphics, making games look crisper and better on the headset. But with the PS5, you may not see quite as big a boost. Sony says that games will load faster and there could be some improvements in graphics in certain games. But it’s not being touted as a key difference-maker yet for PS4-level PSVR games.
I haven’t played VR games on a PS5 yet, but those that have haven’t noticed major advantages. I have played PSVR games on a PS4 Pro vs a PS4 and there is definitely improvement on the PS4 Pro. Maybe it’s too early to tell how VR games on PS5 will be upgraded, but for now it seems to mostly just be playing PSVR games with faster load times.
Even stranger, it seems that PS5 games that have been updated with new graphics also lose their VR component. No Man’s Sky and Hitman III have VR modes, but according to Upload VR the games don’t have VR modes in their PS5 updates. Instead, you’ll need to load the PS4 versions. Which is weird.
Unreal Engine 5 on PS5 seems incredibly promising, and should have VR benefits too.

PlayStation VR is Sony’s virtual reality system. It requires a PlayStation console to work. The PSVR head unit shares a lot in common with PC-based VR systems like HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. However, it uses a PS4 console instead of a VR-capable computer.
PSVR was designed to work with the PS4. It also works with the PS5 with an adapter.
How To Set Up Playstation Vr For Ps5
The bad news is that even if you already own a working PSVR setup, it wont work out of the box with PlayStation 5. The good news is that the only part you need is free, and once you have that everything is the same.
The issue is that the PlayStation 5 doesnt have the custom port used by the PlayStation Camera accessory. Luckily Sony is providing free adapters to any PSVR owners all you have to do is provide your PSVR serial number and the company will send you a free adapter in the post.
Once you have it, simply connect the PlayStation Camera into the adapter, and follow the above steps for the PS4 in exactly the same way for the PS5. Once you get to step 5) simply connect the PlayStation Camera via the new adapter into one of the rear USB ports on your console, and youre sorted.
One quick note: you might be tempted to simply use this as an excuse to upgrade to the new HD Camera for PlayStation 5. Dont. This is only designed for filming yourself for livestreaming, and is not compatible with PlayStation VR. It may prove to be a part of the expected PlayStation VR 2 whenever that arrives, but for the moment it wont help you with any VR setup at all.
